This paper explores the extensions and implications of our optimality-theoretic model of multilingual grammars. We provide evidence indicating that the vast array of empirical facts of bilingual language use (code-switching) are constrained by the operation of five universal socio-cognitive constraints of multilingual grammars, and that community grammars differ from each other in terms of how they prioritize these five constraints. We provide evidence to show that the model we propose (i) accounts for bi-dialectal community grammars, as well as grammars of indigenous and transplanted multilingual communities; (ii) replicates reverse patterns of socio-grammatical differences observed earlier between indigenous and transplan...

And yet, very little organized effort is being made to record the grammatical properties of languages that are destined to doom, as the number of their last surviving speakers dwindles into extinction. Even in those cases where the languages are alive, well and spoken routinely by a million-plus people, there are generally no good descriptive grammars of them written, or available for consumption of linguistic theorizing. Despite the tremendous need for descriptive grammars, the linguistics profession, ironically, has been busy preparing students of linguistics to merely develop and discuss novel theoretical nuances, many of which have a half-life of six months or less.

We provide cross-linguistic empirical evidence to claim that these general sociolinguistic principles, stated as socio-cognitive constraints on code-switching, characterize multi-linguistic competence in so far as they are able to show how "local" functions of code-switching arise as specific instantiations of these "global" principles, or (products of) their interactions.
