Late Upper Palaeolithic ornaments from Vlakno cave, Croatia, 2024

The abundance
and multiform of bead types indicate that the site was likely used as a workshop for ornaments, i.e. that production was performed on site. Technological and use-wear analysis of each taxon used for beads
allowed us to elaborate on its mode of production, use, and overall position of the Vlakno cave site and its role in the regional context during the Late Pleistocene.

The field excavations were conducted in the frame of the Archaeological Investigations into the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene of the Lim Channel (ARCHAEOLIM) project, financed by the Croatian Science Foundation and conducted at four sites: Romuald’s Cave, Abri Kontija 002, Cave near Rovinjsko Selo and Lim 001.

Systematic excavations that are still ongoing revealed rich deposits from the Mesolithic and Palaeolithic period. This site is one of the richest sites on the Eastern Adriatic coast with the finds of ornamental assemblage from the Mesolithic and Epigravettian period. Almost 500 specimens of body ornaments, have been discovered so far, along with numerous unperforated marine gastropods species. According to the raw material, ornamental assemblage can be divided into three groups: marine gastropods, bivalves and scaphopoda; freshwater gastropods; terrestrial mammals (teeth and bones). Long sequence of the site’s use may provide information on long-term variations in raw materials selection and technology. Furthermore, careful analysis may give insight into symbolic value of certain ornaments, as well as on possible routes of trade and exchange. On-going multidisciplinary studies include analyses of zooarchaeological origin of the raw material, technological analysis of manufacturing techniques and macro- and microscopic analyses of usewear traces. In this paper preliminary results will be presented, in particular analyses of technological procedures; advantages and problems of use of diverse magnification will be discussed.

This paper advances the current knowledge regarding ornamental traditions in Eastern Adriatic area during Late Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods. Thirteen prehistoric sites from this area have yielded more than thousand finds of ornamental assemblage, making Eastern Adriatic coast and hinterland fruitful area for the research of this type of archaeological assemblage. Results of the analysis have shown existence of diachronic changes in the selection of raw materials from Upper Palaeolithic to Mesolithic period. Personal ornaments are less abundant during Upper Palaeolithic, but are typologically diverse compared to Mesolithic period when the selectivity of the raw material with the large increase of the number of...

By using a detailed macroscopic analysis as well as radiographic imaging (x-ray and CT scanning) of the skulls, we provide a new assessment and interpretation for this type of surgical intervention during the Bronze Age. The first case was that of an adult male from the Rudine site dated to the Early Bronze Age; the second trepanation was recorded on an adult female from the Bezdanjaca Cave, dated to the Middle/Late Bronze Age; the third case was observed on a juvenile cranium from the Jagodnjak site, dated to the Middle Bronze Age. All three cases exhibit several similarities: (i) all are located on the right side of the frontal bone; (ii) all three are of similar dimension/shape; (iii) in all cases all three layers of calvarium were breached; and (iv) similar techniques for the trepanation procedure were used in all cases. These three crania represent the oldest cases of intentional medical interventions in the territory of modern-day Croatia, while the Jagodnjak individual is the youngest person thus far discovered with this kind of treatment in the region.

There is much debate on issues related to biological and behavioural continuity, to patterns of changes and adaptations during this crucial period, and to external factors (e.g. changes in ecology and climate). For example, a clearer insight is needed into how climatic change affects the ecology of specific regions, including changing sea levels. Additionally, there continues to be debate centring on who produced the earliest (Initial) Upper Palaeolithic industries in Europe. To achieve a more precise insight into long-term diachronic changes and cultural relations around the Adriatic, and to document the presence of Middle and Upper Palaeolithic humans in Istria, we concentrated on a s...
