It goes well beyond the simple concepts of saving and borrowing. Lack of financial knowledge can expose youth to face financial difficulties. This research focuses on assessing the impact of financial exposure via educational channels on university student’s financial attitude. The approach of the research is qualitative in nature. Data was collected through structured interviews. The interview included questions on demographics, education, health insurance and financial capability among Sudanese youth. Twenty (20) university students from two different states were interviewed between August 2013 and September 2013. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The findings of this research revealed that youth who were exposed to financial knowledge during their university studies have better understanding of financial knowledge compared to those who were not exposed. This paper seeks to find the reasons for this relatively low penetration rate of the Tak āful industry among Malaysians from the perspective of Malaysians who do not participate in the Tak āful industry. An... more The Malaysian Takāful industry has experienced encouraging growth since its inception in 1985. Annual growth rate of the industry has been estimated to be around 20%. Despite such impressive rate of growth, it is believed that the market penetration of Takāful is still low. This paper seeks to find the factors influencing Takāful market penetration based on the experience of managers of Takāful operators. Twenty (20) Takāful managers were randomly selected and interviewed. The interviewees pointed out the factors that deter the public from participating in Takāful could be listed as follows: the lack of public awareness in the advantages of Takāful over insurance products, the limited range of product varieties, the shortage of relevant expertise to explain Takāful products, the need to improve the distribution channels and marketing strategies. The paper also suggested several ways of improving Takāful market penetration, namely: the need to develop tailor-made products to suit customer needs according to the different segments of the society, expanding the range of product varieties, extensive training of staff and agents to enhance their products and services, technical and Shariăh knowledge as well as to intensify promotion for higher level of awareness.

Its objective is to identify the factors that influence the market penetration from the perspective of Takāful participants. Data was collected through a survey and was analyzed using SPSS software. Employed techniques was Cross Tabulation & Chi-Square tests. It was found that the factors influencing Takāful penetration were age, gender, religion, marital status, education, income, awareness, product varieties, and knowledge of staff and agents of Takāful. Since its inception, AITAB has been a popular product due to the heightened demand by customers. Although AITAB is popular, it is not without condemn especially on the issue of using Rule 78, which is similar to conventional Hire-Purchase practise. This paper, attempts to address the issue of using Rule 78 which affects the customers in the case of default. A case study is used to compare the use of Rule 78 and simple profit rate methods on repaying the principal amount and the profit rate by the customer. The discussion is based upon the case on vehicle financing for three years and the impact on the defaulter on the thirteenth month of financing. The result shows the customer pays higher amount in the case of default using the Rule 78 in financing compared to simple profit rate method.

Abstract Purpose This paper is a case study of the implementation of Basel II Accords, under the ... more Abstract Purpose This paper is a case study of the implementation of Basel II Accords, under the reformulation of IFSB, by Islamic banks with special reference to Bank Islamic Malaysia Berhad (BIMB). Method We have analysed the content of BIMB annual reports and interviewed a senior executive to determine the extent of the implementation and to identify the issues. Findings We have found that BIMB is well capitalised and is using the standardised and basic indicator approaches for the calculation of risk weighted assets. Among all the 3 types of risk that require capital for their management in the context of Basel II, credit risk is the most important at BIMB, as its proportion in the total risk weighted assets is more than 86%. This can be explained by the overreliance of BIMB on debt instruments in its financing activities, corresponding to more 99%, while equity based financing represents 0.1%.
