Figure A. Experimental setup Purpose: In this study, it is aimed to investigate the effects of the driving characteristics of a vehicle on vibration and mechanical noise. For this purpose, a passenger car has been tested at different vehicle speeds and gears on the chassis dynamometer. Theory and Methods: The study was performed experimentally using the test bench as seen in Figure A. The experimental study was performed in two different gears. Firstly, the test vehicle was tested at a vehicle speed range of 40-110 km/h and a particular gear (5 th gear) in straight-line conditions. In the second phase, the test vehicle was run at 50 and 90 km/h for the same driving resistances but in the 4 th gear. All data obtained were analyzed and compared to each other. Results: According to the measurement results in the 5 th gear, depending on the variation of the vehicle speed from 40 km/h to 110 km/h, the vibration total value increased by approximately 3 times, and the noise increased by 9.4 dB(A). When the effect of different gears on vibration was considered, the results showed that the vibration total values in the 5 th gear are lower than that of the 4 th gear (approximately 15.3% at 50 km/h and 30.3% at 90 km/h vehicle speed). However, there was no significant difference in the noise values between the two gears. Conclusion: According to the measurement results at a particular gear, the vibration total value and noise increased depending on the vehicle speed. In other words, vibration and noise were affected by both engine speed and load. The results of the performed tests at the same vehicle speeds in the 4 th and 5 th gears to understand the effect of the engine speed and load on vibration and noise clearly showed that engine speed affects vibration and mechanical noise more than engine load considered to the test conditions in this study.
