The dynamics of catalase (CaT) and guaiacol peroxidase (POD) activity in winter wheat ( Triticum... more The dynamics of catalase (CaT) and guaiacol peroxidase (POD) activity in winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) leaves under exposure to a low hardening temperature of 4 ° C for 7 days was studied. It was established that the freezing tolerance of the seedlings increased already after 1 hour of exposure, and then continued to grow, reaching a maximum on the 7 th day. The content of malondialdehyde increased slightly during the first 2 days of cold exposure and then declined, possibly pointing to attenuation of the oxidative stress in plant cells. It was also found that the activity of one of the key antioxi dant enzymes involved in hydrogen peroxide (h 2 O 2 ) recycling – CaT, increased after 1 hour of cold exposure. CaT activity then continued to increase, reaching a maximum on the 2 nd day, with a decline following afterwards. along with this, POD activity increased throughout the cold hardening period. In addition, a slight increase in H 2 O 2 content in leaves was detected d...

It was found that at initial phases of the impact low hardening (12 °C) and damaging (4 °C) temperatures inhibit the process of accumulation of cotyledons’ wet and dry biomass, promote the activity of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), enlarge the content of free proline and the final product of lipid peroxidation (LPO) – malondialdehyde (MDA). Extended 3‑day exposure to the hardening 12 °С temperature re-launched growth processes with further increase of SOD activity and the level of free proline in leaves, thus promoting the cold tolerance of cucumber seedlings. In contrast, exposure to the damaging 4 °C temperature for 1–3 days caused irreversible inhibition of the accumulation of cotyledons’ wet and dry biomass, a significant increase of MDA and free proline, a decrease of SOD activit...

Titov. METHYL JASMONATE EFFECT ON THE PROCESS OF COLD ADAPTATION IN WHEAT The effect of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on frost resistance, photosynthetic and respiratory activity, and water metabolism in wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) exposed to a low hardening temperature (4 °С) was studied. It was found that under hardening conditions, treatment with MeJA led to a greater increase in the plants' frost resistance than without it, and also augmented dry shoot and root biomass gain. In addition, pretreatment with MeJA helped the seedlings maintain a higher rate of net photosynthesis and transpiration, and increased stomatal conductance during the hardening period. Also, the rate of dark respiration was observed to rise in the presence of MeJA, leading an increase in the ratio of respiration to gross photosynthesis (Rd/Pg). Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that MeJA had a positive effect on the cold adaptation of wheat plants, which is due to its regulatory effect on the main physiological processes.
