The article is devoted to the analysis of metaphor in the tropes and figures theory in ancient rh... more The article is devoted to the analysis of metaphor in the tropes and figures theory in ancient rhetorical tradition. It is described that Aristotle and Quintilian were interested in denotation of metaphor notion, genesis of metaphor from comparison, scope of metaphors and their stylistic relevance. The above mentioned authors proposed various classifications of metaphors according their type, but those classifications agreed with each other on account of transfer of meaning according to category of animateness/ inanimateness.
