Igor Đurović’s most informative book is about an instrument which is rarely mentioned in the international iconography, let alone the organology: The gusle.
The volume discusses the instrument from its earliest sources in prehistory to the Middle-Ages. The instrument would have developed organically from the earliest form of the musical bow that we know from parietal art in archaeology and with its various forms in ethnomusicology. The seminal earth bow that we find in the Cameroon, the Congo and in Mali would have had its counterpart in the Serbian periphery probably as a polygenetic phenomenon as soon as man invented the hunting bow, the harp was not far behind. Đurović gives a fascinating account of the development of the instrument with very good illustrations which seriously lacked in other works.
There are two principle aspects of organology which are discussed in this book. Firstly the usage of an inflated an dried pig’s, sheep’s and even a bull’s bladder having the function of sound-box, or resonator, a method which was not used in the Ancient Near-East, or rather that the iconography did not represent. It was certainly the earliest form of sound-box/resonator in Central Western Antiquity, and secondly the usage of a stick used to ‘bow’ the instrument, a method which we thought had originated in the Middle-East when the ‘bowing’ bow became complemented with horses’ or other animal’s hairs.
Then Đurović embarks on the ornamentation of these instruments in a comparative study with other sources such as Ancient Egypt and finally reaches the Middle-Ages with a rich and fascinating iconography.
The volume carries on with a chapter dedicated to philology where the author approaches Panslavic linguistics which I will leave the reader to discover for themselves.
The conclusion consists of fifteen concise paragraphs which are an excellent resumé about the gusle, an authentic Serbian instrument.
The author must be congratulated for such an essential work on the rich heritage of Serbian organology.
