Online social networking and the mobilization of thousands of people require leadership with the ability to respond quickly and make the multiple connections necessary for a purposeful organization to function. This hypothesis leads us to establish a classification of three key elements to consider when talking about participation through social networks: first, who calls for participation and who participates; second, what purpose is pursued with such participation; and third, how does participation take place. This article focuses on the context of Spain and the role played by Facebook and Twitter, two of the most relevant social networks. It analyzes data gathered in the 2011-2014 period, when economic and social crisis in Spain fostered several civic movements, two of which, M-15 and the Anti-Evictions Platform, will be analyzed in this article. These brief case studies illustrate contemporary political activism and outcomes connected to social networks in Spain.
