Research paper thumbnail of The Image of Gypsies in the Contemporary Russian Society

4th International Multidisciplinary Scientific Conference on Social Sciences and Arts SGEM2017, MODERN SCIENCE, 2017

Periodically the actions of Gypsies (including their individual representatives) cause such violent surges of discontent that can be settled only by law enforcement authorities. For example, in August 2016 in Ukrainian village of Loschinovka there were pogroms of houses inhabited by Gypsy families, in response to the murder of a local girl by a Gypsy; in March 2016, in Tula village of Plekhanovo enforcement authorities were engaged in connection with the illegal tapping into the gas pipeline by the local Gypsies, etc. This paper studies public perception of Gypsies, forcing violent and abrupt reactions of other people to actions of Gypsies; it also investigates the causes of such perception, ways of their formation and possibilities of their change. The study is based on the discussion in the "Live journal" in August 2016, initiated by a Gypsy, in which young parents took part. The research method is narrative analysis. The contributing opinions to the discussion (more than 400), have been analyzed from the perspective of the image, the Russians have of Gypsies, and the features that are considered most typical. The following components of the image of Gypsies were analyzed in the study: appearance, places of settlement, types of employment, victims of Gypsies, techniques for resisting Gypsies, attitude to Gypsies, attitude of Gypsies towards Gypsies and non-Gypsies, ways to change the attitude towards Gypsies. The Gypsies are identified by the representatives of other ethnic groups primarily by their appearance, occupation and places of settlement. The victims of illegal actions of Gypsies are mainly women. The techniques to resist Gypsies are ignoring them, using their own methods, search for protection. Gypsies clearly identify people as their own kind and others, which they appear to do on the basis of blood relations. They actively and even aggressively protect people of their own kind; the attitude to others is bad. Gypsies believe constructivism is the means to change the attitude of other people towards them. Representatives of other ethnic groups believe that constructivism can be applied only on the basis of Gypsies" modifying their own behaviour.

Dynamics of values enables insight on the probable speed of modernization in the territory where these subjects locate. It is evident that the sluggish process of modernization and the absence of required innovation activity are the key-factors of economic and socio-cultural development of the relevant territory. The paper displays research results on the meaning of the term “value” existing among such social groups as pupils and students. The true information on priority of social meaning of the term “value” in study groups were obtained, as well as the core values characteristic for these groups was revealed. The responses, expressing peripheral social meanings, were separated as a singular group.

Journal of Siberian Federal University. Humanities & Social Sciences, 2018

Culturological and sociological research of Russian urban environment is a relatively young trend... more Culturological and sociological research of Russian urban environment is a relatively young trend in the Russian humanities; before 1991, the urban environment research was only carried out within the framework of city planning surveys. In the 1990-s, sociological and culturological studies of urban environment began; in the 21st century, the number of such researches began to grow, with the greatest interest towards the actual environment conditions; only few researchers focus on the Soviet or pre-Revolutionary past. The main methods of Russian urban environment research are: overt observation, mapping (using GIS), interview and questionnaire survey. The researches focus not only and not rather on capital cities, but also on regional centres and small provincial towns. The important problems are the local, "non-façade" issues of the modern urban environment; those are not only the material components of the urban environment that are of the researchers' interest, but the intangible ones, such as emotions, perception by the residents, audial component of the city etc. In the contemporary researches of Russian urban environment, description and analysis of particular cases prevail over the theoretical generalizations, which proves the vibrant development of this field of study.

The purpose of this study is to analyse three works by the Czech artist A. Mucha “Madonna of the Lilies”, the Poster for “The Lottery of the Union of Southwest Moravia” and the Poster for “The Slav Epic Exhibition”, to reveal the programmatic content of each of these works, as well as their general artistic idea. The works by A. Mucha were analysed using the method proposed and justified in the field of theory and history of culture by the Russian scientist V.I. Zhukovsky. This technique determined the logic of analysis of the selected works. Such methods as observation, formalisation, analysis, synthesis, analogy, extrapolation and interpretation were applied. The result of a methodical analysis of the three selected works by A. Mucha testifies to the programmatic creativity of the artist, to a single semantic regularity...

Ethnic identification processes among the Central Siberian Evenks, in particular, were on the rise during the Soviet period. The ethnic communities of Evenkia are now undergoing active stratification, with the emergence of a political elite known as "professional aborigines." This political elite is more likely to include people with mixed backgrounds residing in urbanized settlements rather than pure Evenks living a nomadic lifestyle. "Professional aborigines" have clearly identifiable economic interests characteristic of the post-Soviet market economy, including high corruption rates identified with so-called "state capture."

Assumptions about pace of regional transition can be made from information about dynamics of values, shared by social subjects living in this area and give an instrument to predict pace of modernization. In the article the results of the survey of values shared among schoolchildren and students, conducted in Krasnoyarsk region of Central Siberia in 2016, are presented. The authors outline correlation of educational level, age and values, underline primal social meaning of the term «value» within the social groups under investigation, and define core values of these groups. Gender associations, social identification, and their economic impact are shown. A significant result of the analysis is that the value «family» is the most important for both groups of the respondents. Among students personal values and priorities significantly dominate social and community ones which is an important issue in policy-making for Central Siberia.

The need of natural globalization becomes more obvious taking into account the growth of challenge to the humankind. Artificial globalization nowadays is provided by westernization. Influence of globalization is more obvious at the mental than at the physical level, construction of the historical past and its mythologization played major roles in the course of globalization. Different relations between ideology and myth can be traced on the example of the destinies of two works, in which almost the same idea of the world order is represented. These are " The Oera Linda Book " and " The Snow Queen ". As a part of the study, seven invariants of the fairy tale by H.C. Andersen were analyzed. The carried-out analysis is based on a hypothesis that artificial globalization influences mythology of certain cultures, distorting it for own needs, resorting to different methods for different forms of the myth representation. So, myths in their pure form, demanded by the adult representatives of culture, are subjected to criticism, they are charged of falsification. The ultimate goal of such an influence is to bury the myth in oblivion as false. The myth that is represented in the reduced art form for children's audience has the changed plot basis and in this new form it is subjected to maximum replication to substitute the original version in a period of time.
