and its “Young Prometheus” branch in Harbin. The club was offi cially opened on 12 November 1932 in the house of the Gospoda Polska (literally: Polish Inn) Association. Georgians,
Ukrainians, and Poles founded the club. Its president was elected Ivan Svit (1932–1936) and
Dmytro Barchenko (1934–1935), and Ivan Paslavski was elected its secretary. The Young
Prometheus Club was founded in December 1933 on the initiative of the Ukrainian youth
Green Ukraine (Zelenyi Klyn). Initially, its main task was cultural and educational work
among nations oppressed by Russia, followed by political struggle. An important aspect of
its activities was the publication of periodicals: Listy Harbińskie (Harbin Letters), Daleki
Wschód (Far East), and Mandzhurskyi Vistnyk (Manchurian Herald), as well as its separate Strona Prometejska (Promethean Page). In general, the activities of the “Prometheus”
Club can be divided into two periods: an active phase between 1932 and 1934 and a slow
decline after the departure of Władysław Pelc in 1934. It can be said that the club’s activities were strictly controlled by the Second Division of the Polish General Staff, which
sponsored its activities. After 1936, the “Prometheus” Club ceased to exist for several social
and political reasons.

The research contains eleven letters and one appendix on two pages, which chronologically span fifteen years. The letters are an important scientific discovery, so we consider it appropriate to publish them. O. Pritsak helped to a great extent with the search of materials for I. Svit's works. From the content of the letters we can learn the following things: information about T. Shevchenko in Turkish or Arabic languages, clarification of the geographical names of some Middle Eastern regions, discovering the book of Fujiwara no Teika “Hyakunin Isshu”. O. Pritsak quite often consulted Ivan Svit in the aspect of oriental studies as I. Svit was not a typical expert in this field. However, he frequently illustrated Oriental studies in own works.
Omeljan Pritsak helped in publishing the book by I. Svit “Ukrainian-Japanese Relations 1903–1945: Historical Review and Observations”. In his turn, thanks to I. Svit, the orientalist learned about the history of Ukrainian Oriental studies in interbellum China. He received rare editions and information about many Ukrainian scientists from the Far East. This is what made it possible to write later a small article “Orientalism” in the General Ukrainian Encyclopedia. Thanks to O. Pritsak, I. Svit was involved in cooperation with many Ukrainian encyclopedias. Perhaps, the most valuable information in the letter is the mention of Japanese and Chinese language publications about Ukraine. The epistles also suggest that there were several publications about Ukrainian on Japanese language, which only need to be found.

This society was founded in early 1936 and stopped its activities in early 1938, as there was no information about the organization after this year. The most active members of UOS were: Fedir Danilenko (president), Boris Vobliy (secretary), Dmitry Barchenko, Vasyl Odynets, Valentina Korda-Korotenko. For the first time the article introduced a collection called "Far East" published in 1936 and it was declared as non-periodic. In particular, there were published the examples of traditional Chinese poetry translated by D. Barchenko. F. Danilenko completed the translation of the story written by Pu Songling from the cycle "Strange stories from a Chinese studio". The plot of the play "The Goddess of the Moon" included in this collection, depicts the traditional Taoist universe. V. Odinets in "Kytay or China" presented the history and etymology of the names of the Chinese Civilization. The "Report on the work of the Ukrainian National Colony in Manchukuo" published in 1937 by "Record Press" was the last source where the UOS was mentioned. At the end of the book there is a list of the reports completed by members of the Ukrainian Orientalists Society from December 1936 to March 1937: T. Gordeyev "Agricultural conditions in Manchuria", V. Odinets "Van-Dao", V. Korotenko "Love of the Chinese", V. Odinets "Cult of the Ancestors of the Chinese, F. Danilenko "The Goddess of Mercy" and "Confucius and Its Science", V. Odinets "Pioneers of Ukrainian Oriental Studies" and "Knowing the East". In Ukrainian science on the Chinese literature these translations do not have any analogues, so they are of special interest. In general, this publication will trace the history of the formation of Ukrainian orientalism in the territory of China.

The scientist’s contribution to the study of Japan’s history and Ukrainian-Japanese relations, as well as the direct participation of Ivan Svit in Ukrainian-Japanese life in the Far East, was investigated. Ivan Svit became interested in Japan in the summer 1918 as he was living on its territory during this time. There he was able to master the basics of the Japanese language. Shortly after that, the researcher was working on the steamboat that plied between the Japanese archipelago and Vladivostok. Throughout the intervention of the Japanese forces in Siberia in 1918–1922, Ivan Svit was actively publishing in various periodicals the information regarding the representatives of the Japanese occupation. Also he was gathering the information for the future studies of this period. During 1929–1932, Ivan Svit was a subeditor of the separate page entitled «Ukrayinske zhittya» in the famous Chinese weekly periodical «Gun-bao». While working in this newspaper, Ivan Svit got acquainted with N. Gungji, K. Fukui (authorized persons of the Japanese administration), T. Takahata (representative of the transport department of Harbin), professors Kitagava and Shimamura, who provided him with the newest and the most complete information for the periodical. In 1932 the researcher became an editor of «Manchzhurskiy visnik» which contained a large number of articles on the subjects of Japanese studies. Also, during this period, Ivan Svit published his works concerning Ukrainian-Japanese cooperation at the expense of Ukrainian National Colony. During 1941–1949 the researcher was living in Shanghai and totally devoted himself to the scientifi c work, for instance, he became a kind of a mediator between S. Lewinsky, A. Dibrova and V. Odinets, who were working on the publication of the Ukrainian-Japanese dictionary in 1944. The year 1951 is characterized by the beginning of the «American Period» of the life of the scientist and it was marked by an extremely great amount of work concerning the Ukrainian-Japanese relations in the Far East. Most of works on the Japanese studies were compiled in the monograph «Ukrainian-Japanese relations 1903–1945». It was published in 1972 and became the most complete research on this subject in the domestic and even world scientifi c literature. A famous Japanese historian, political scientist and specialist of Slav languages and literature Kazuo Nakai noted that he could fi nd the «Ukrainian-Nippon dictionary» only in the personal archives of Ivan Svit in 1980 when he had an appointment with the Ukrainian scientist. A lot of encyclopedic editions were cooperating with the scientist in order to write the topics related to the Far East, Japan and Ukrainian-Japanese relations. This article gives a detailed list and analysis of scientifi c works where the subject of Japanese studies was represented.
