In the period of the Soviet Union the transition from completely closed borders to extremely liberal boundary conditions, the radical development of communication systems in the post-Soviet period has completely changed the perspective of socioeconomic development in this border region. In the article there are scientifically grounded ways of socioeconomic development of the region.

The project's two main themes are: (1) migration from the region to the European Union (EU) focusing in particular on countries of emigration and transit on the EU's eastern border; and (2) intraregional migration in the post-Soviet space. The project started on 1 April 2011 as a joint initiative of the European University Institute (EUI), Florence, Italy (the lead institution), and the Centre of Migration Research (CMR) at the University of Warsaw, Poland (the partner institution). CARIM researchers undertake comprehensive and policy-oriented analyses of very diverse aspects of human mobility and related labour market developments east of the EU and discuss their likely impacts on the fast evolving socioeconomic fabric of the six Eastern Partners and Russia, as well as that of the European Union. In particular, CARIM-East: builds a broad network of national experts from the region representing all principal disciplines focused on human migration, labour mobility and national development issues (e.g. demography, law, economics, sociology, political science). develops a comprehensive database to monitor migration stocks and flows in the region, relevant legislative developments and national policy initiatives; undertakes, jointly with researchers from the region, systematic and ad hoc studies of emerging migration issues at regional and national levels. provides opportunities for scholars from the region to participate in workshops organized by the EUI and CMR, including academic exchange opportunities for PhD candidates;
The national recording system for international migration in Georgia is essentially unregulated. ... more The national recording system for international migration in Georgia is essentially unregulated. This is due both to the complexity of migration registration and by the grave situation in the country at the time of statistics reform in Georgia. Unfortunately, in the post-Soviet years, with economic collapse and political chaos statistical registration in the country was disrupted and even if social and economic recovery started only recently there, statistics were not relevant to the contemporary situation. As to migration flows, the strict registration of people?s movement was still in effect in the first years of the post-Soviet period. Statistical services received tags from so-called ?registration sheets.? Migrants could not change their place of residence without applying to the passport service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Liberalization of people?s movement given the absence of a population register made the process of registration unmanageable. Today, few changes hav...

The number of cases identified and recognized by the court is insignificant compared to the mass of cases that contain clear evidence of human trafficking. According to experts, the victims of human trafficking avoid acknowledging this fact for various reasons. There are many cases when law enforcement agencies avoid or do not fight against human trafficking appropriately. 1Consortium for Applied Research on International Migration (CARIM-East) is co-financed by the European University Institute and the European Unio

During 1989-2014, in the period between the general population censuses, Georgia’s population decreased by one third. The process of depopulation can be suspended by the acceleration of the country’s economic development, rationalization of management and study of migration processes and the elaboration of proper migration policy. Therefore, the study of the students` intention to emigrate is of great importance. The work is based on the studies carried out by the Center for Migration Studies of Tbilisi State University and by the Institute of Demography and Sociology in 2014 and 2018. It has been established that the intention to emigrate still remains active among students. Apart from the willingness to study, the willingness to get a job tends to increase, with the share of the individuals unconditionally returning to Georgia decreasing. In particular, it has been established that if their ...

In the periods between population universal census (2002-2014) Georgia's population decreased by 15% that was almost due to migratory processes. The share of the European Union, especially southern European countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal and so on) is growing rapidly in labor emigration streams; this was reflected in the rapid growth of remittances from these countries. Significant changes are taking place in internal migration. The growth rate of population redistribution from rural to urban areas rose significantly. In rural areas the aging process in labor resources became accelerated that caused problems in the development of labor-intensive branches of agricultural sector. The cross-border migration with Turkey and Azerbaijan gradually becomes more intensive and it almost stopped with Russia. The changes in communication systems played a great role in this matter. Intensive labor links are formed in the urbanized Black Sea littoral. It is likely that significant internal migrations will be emerged through the realization of large projects: the start of the construction of international port city Anaklia, as well as the connection of the South Georgia's railway link with Turkey. The noted projects will bring changes in the directions of migration streams in the country. As the study shows it becomes necessary to intensify both external and internal migration policies which will be set out in details in our report.
