Establishing the incidence and mortality data for stroke in the Blida region (Algeria) for 2018, ... more Establishing the incidence and mortality data for stroke in the Blida region (Algeria) for 2018, through the setting up of a population-based register, was the objective of this study. The World Health Organization criteria were used to define the stroke. Cerebral imaging was required to confirm stroke and its hemorrhagic or ischemic mechanism. The target population of the study was inhabitants of the region (wilaya) of Blida (Algeria) aged 25 and over. The ratios of overall incidence and mortality rates and age-specific stroke rates were considered to be relative risk (RR). The Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR) was the ratio of standardized rates. A total of 828 stroke were reported, 85.1% ischemic and 13.5% hemorrhagic. The first-ever strokes constituted 70.5% of the strokes for which the occurrence was documented. The overall incidence rate of stroke for 2018, regardless of mechanism and occurrence, was estimated at 130.3/100000. The corresponding standardized rate for age was 1...

A report by households of a doctor's diagnosis of asthma was used to identify subjects with this disease from a direct face-to-face interviewing. The overall annual prevalence was 34.2 per thousand and the annual incidence was estimated as 3.1 per thousand. Except for children under 5 years of age which prevalence was 16 per thousand, the prevalence ranged from 34 to 41 per thousand for the other age groups. There was no significant difference between children and young adults for prevalence or incidence rates of asthma. The prevalence was two times greater in boys than in girls. On the other hand, the prevalence of asthma was 2.5 times greater in upper social class persons than in lower class...

By a direct face-to-face interviewing, 936 households were surveyed, i.e. 7,217 individuals. The overall prevalence of regular drug consumption was 104.3%. The one of drug consumption during the month prior to the survey was 92.1%. Subjects aged 65 years and older had the highest prevalence (37.6%) of regular consumption; the most frequently consumed drugs were then antihypertensive agents accounted for 19.1% of all drugs used. The most frequently consumed drugs by children under age 15 years were antimicrobials accounted for 41.2% of total drug use. Women were more likely to use drugs than men. There was an association between social class and drug consumption; the lower the social class of individuals, the lower their consumption. The household surveys seem to be an interesting source of data on drug use.

Carried out cooperatively by the police and the hospitals of the area, our cohort study revealed a high annual incidence (700 per 100,000) of traffic accidents among residents of Algiers. Children between 5 and 9, adolescents, young adults and people over 60 are the most vulnerable. Older persons and children are for the most part pedestrians. Fractures of lower limbs are relatively numerous and account for 10% of all registered injuries. Moreover, 92.1% of injuries, corresponding to the highest AIS in each part of the body affected, are either minor or moderate. The severity of injuries seems to be independent of age, sex and category (pedestrians, motorcyclists, etc.) of the road user. The ISS, which is correlated to the duration of hospital stay, gives much the same results. Only by linking the data from the different information sources c...

The overall incidence rate of low back pain was 90.9 per thousand. The incidence of low back pain increased markedly with age, exceeding 250 per thousand in women aged 50 to 59. There was no significant difference in incidence between different socio-occupational groups. Almost 45% of cases of low back pain had been present for more than 5 years. More than 90% of low back pain sufferers were totally independent. The proportion of severe handicaps, partially possibly due to the advanced age of the individuals concerned, was relatively low.
