As a consequence, over the recent decades, the Bay has been exposed to anthropogenic pollution. Marine sediment acts at the same time as a depositor and also the secondary source of pollutants, thus the analysis of pollutants in sediment is of vital importance for the estimation of its quality. Based on the results obtained over the past two decades, this paper considers characterization of sediment of the Boka Kotorska Bay in terms of heavy metal content and an assessment of heavy metal contamination in sediment and biota (Mytilus galloprovincialis and Posidonia oceanica), by applying environmental quality indexes: Enrichment Factor (EF), Metal Pollution Index (MPI), and Geo-accumulation Index (Igeo).

One of main environmental tasks is water quality monitoring, i.e. monitoring of the possible presence of harmful substances as well as determining their concentrations in water. Monitoring of marine environment trace metals pollution, which represent a basis for the control of pollution of the marine environment, is usually limited not only by performance and detection limits of the existing analytical techniques, but also by the general lack of interest, since rivers and oceans have for quite some time been used for disposal of various wastes.

The evaluation and enhancement of business processes in any organization in an uncertain environm... more The evaluation and enhancement of business processes in any organization in an uncertain environment presents one of the main requirements of ISO 9000:2008, and has a key effect on competitive advantage and long-term sustainability. The aim of this paper can be defined as the identification and discussion of some of the most important business processes of seaports, and the performances of business processes and their key performance indicators (KPIs). The complexity and importance of the treated problem calls for analytic methods rather than intuitive decisions. The existing decision variables of the considered problem are described by linguistic expressions which are modelled by triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs). In this paper, the modified fuzzy extended analytic hierarchy process (MFAHP) is proposed. The assessment of the relative importance of each pair of performances and their KPIs are stated as a fuzzy group decision making problem. By using MFAHP, the fuzzy rank of business processes of a seaport is obtained. The model is verified through an illustrative example with real life data, where the obtained data suggest measures which should enhance business strategy and improve KPIs. The future improvement is based on benchmark and knowledge sharing.

Most scientists still using good-old-paper way for such tasks and later transform it into digital form using spreadsheet applications. This approach looks more "safe" (if person is not confident in their computer skills) but in reality it turns to be more error-prone (especially when it comes to position recording and variations of sexagesimal representations or if there are no hints which timezone was used for time recording). Research paper thumbnail of Assessment of heavy metal pollution in surface sediments of the Montenegrin coast: a 10-year review

Journal of Soils and Sediments, Nov 25, 2019

Purpose Heavy metals are among the most common environmental pollutants, which can be introduced ... more Purpose Heavy metals are among the most common environmental pollutants, which can be introduced into coastal areas from natural and anthropogenic sources, and thereby possibly impact marine organisms and human population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the pollution level of Montenegrin coastal sediments by determining the concentrations of 10 metals and metalloids (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg) during one whole decade. Materials and methods Sediment samples were collected from 11 sites along the Montenegrin coast during the 2005–2016 exposure to different levels and sources of anthropogenic impact. The extent of pollution was estimated by determining total element concentrations in the sediment. Mineralized samples were analyzed for Cu, Ni, Fe, Mn, Cr, As, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Hg. Pollution status was evaluated using the contamination factor, pollution load index, and geo-accumulation index, as well as statistical methods, such as Pearson correlation coefficient ( r ) and cluster analysis (CA). Results and discussion This study showed that concentrations of individual metals at some locations were extremely high. The metal concentrations (in mg kg −1 ) ranged as follows: Fe 1995–45,498; Mn 135–1139; Zn 10–1596; Cu 3.8–2719; Ni 2.94–267; Pb 0.1–755; Cr 2.5–369; Cd 0.1–5.4; As 0.1–39.1; and Hg 0.01–14.2. The calculated concentration factor and pollution load index indicates enrichment by either natural processes or anthropogenic influences. The geo-accumulation index value (Igeo) showed that one location was strongly or extremely polluted (3.78 < Igeo ≤ 6.15) with Hg in all investigated years, while extreme Igeo values for four bioactive elements, Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn, were found in only a few single samples. Conclusions On the basis of the obtained values, it can be concluded that generally higher metal contents were distributed in Boka Kotorska Bay sites, although some extreme values were also recorded at the locations outside of the Bay. Geo-accumulation index and pollution load index showed that the metal levels were high enough to pose risk to the ecosystem.

The mussels and sediment samples were collected at three sites along the Boka Kotorska Bay from the autumn of 2014 to the winter of 2016. The concentrations (mg/kg dw) of these metals in the mussel samples ranged from 1.01 to 2.87 for Cd, 6.08 to 13.2 for Cu, 1.37 to 3.55 for Pb, 85.6 to 241 for Zn, 0.72 to 4.05 for Cr and 0.098 to 0.269 for Hg. The concentrations (mg/kg dw) of these metals in the sediment samples ranged from 0.16 to 0.39 for Cd, 4.32 to 48.2 for Cu, 7.02 to 49.8 for Pb, 22.0 to 158 for Zn, 93.1 to 317 for Cr and 0.035 to 0.497 for Hg. The metal content in the mussel samples and the metal content in the sediment collected from three locations over four different seasons were analy...

Using combination of customized tools developed for extraction of meta-data and data records from CTD files as well as standard office applications, data were extracted, transformed, processed and unified by attributes and units of measurement. To make those data available for wider scientific community, we have developed web portal able to be used for data retrieval based on various filters (spatial, temporal, by project and/or by sampling instrument). Selected data model proves to be also very efficient for generating of data-exchange formats required by various projects and initiatives (e.g. SeaDataNet) so extended by particular dictionaries it can allow fast implementation of integration services.
