The lesion was located in the proximal metaphysis of the left tibia. Histologic and microbiologic confirmation of the diagnosis was made. A "penumbra sign" on non-contrast enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance images is a helpful diagnostic sign of Brodie's abscess.

This has partly been attributed to the loss of splenic function that occurs early in the disease process. We aimed to study the prevalence of malaria infection among Nigerian SCD patients and explore the association with spleen size and function.MethodThis was a hospital-based, cross-sectional study performed at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in North-Eastern Nigeria from October 2020 to November 2021. Giemsa-stained blood smears for malaria parasites, Howell-Jolly body (HJB) red cells enumeration for spleen function evaluation and ultrasonography for spleen size assessment, were performed in acutely-ill SCD patients. Results of malaria parasitaemia and parasite density were compared with those of steady-state SCD patients and non-SCD controls.ResultsA total of 394 participants consisting of 119 acutely-ill SCD patients, 167 steady-state SC...

Because of variation due to genetic and other environmental factors including malaria endemicity, interpretation of splenic sizes requires a knowledge of the normal reference range for a given population. The aim of this study was to determine spleen size in different age groups among healthy people in North-Eastern Nigeria and use this as a reference to determine spleen size amongst sickle cell disease (SCD) patients.MethodsUsing a cross-sectional study design, spleen size was measured in healthy people of different age groups, and steady-state SCD patients (children and adults) using abdominal ultrasonography. Using the age-group specific reference values obtained from the controls, spleens were classified into small, normal size, or enlarged among the SCD patients.ResultsAbdominal ultrasonography was performed for 313 participants, comprising 109 (34.8%) healthy controls and 204 (65.2%) stea...

Computed tomography (CT) scan is an important imaging modality in confirming the diagnosis of stroke, classifying stroke subtypes and ruling out stroke mimics. Objectives: To determine the CT findings of patients with stroke in Maiduguri, North-eastern Nigeria. Methodology: A retrospective hospital-based study conducted at the Department of Radiology, Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri, North-eastern Nigeria over four-year period from January 2015 to December 2018. All patients were clinically diagnosed with stroke and referred to the department for a brain CT scan. The request forms and CT reports were retrieved from the Archive and analysed. All patients were examined with a 16-slice General Electric CT scanner. Data were analysed using SPSS statistical software version 23. Results: There were 138 patients and out of which, 83 (60%) we...

Ps... more Background: Pseudoaneurysms are vascular abnormalities due to disruption of the arterial wall. Pseudoaneurysm of the superficial femoral artery following bomb-blast injury is extremely rare. We report a case of 9-year-old girl who presented with one-month history of painful progressive swelling in the left thigh with previous history of improvised explosive device trauma. Doppler ultrasound scan confirmed the diagnosis of pseudoaneurysm of the superficial femoral artery and the patient had an uneventful surgical repair. High index of suspicion following penetrating trauma of the limb and Doppler ultrasound (US) scan are important for accurate diagnosis of pseudoaneurysm. Prompt treatment is also warranted to prevent life threatening complications such as rupture and thromboembolism. The classical findings of 'ying-yang' sign on colour Doppler US and 'to and fro' spectral waveform on pulse Doppler US for diagnosis of pseudoaneurysm were demonstrated.

Borno Medical Journal, 2018

Proximal femoral focal deficiency is a rare and complex skeletal anomaly characterized by failure... more Proximal femoral focal deficiency is a rare and complex skeletal anomaly characterized by failure of normal development of the proximal femur, shortening of the lower limb, and pelvic abnormality especially the acetabulum. It was first described by Aitken in the late 1950s. It commonly occurs as a unilateral form but the bilateral variant is rare occurring in 10-15 % of cases. To the best of our knowledge, bilateral proximal femoral focal deficiency has not been reported in Nigeria. We, therefore, present this case in a 25-day-old neonate who presented to our hospital with features consistent with this complex skeletal anomaly.

This case report aimed to draw attention to the possibility of gastric TB simulating a gastric malignancy and to remind clinicians to consider gastric TB as a differential diagnosis in a patient presenting with features simulating gastric tumour, especially when there is past history of PTB. We, therefore, present a rare case of secondary gastric TB simulating gastric malignancy in a 45-year-old man with past history of pulmonary tuberculosis.

The authors describe two female patients with normal (46, XX) karyotype, normal external genitalia and well-developed secondary sexual characteristics who presented with primary amenorrhoea.

Research paper thumbnail of Cardiovascular disturbances in COVID-19: an updated review of the pathophysiology and clinical evidence of cardiovascular damage induced by SARS-CoV-2

BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, 2022

Severe acute respiratory coronavirus-2 (SARS-Co-2) is the causative agent of coronavirus disease-... more Severe acute respiratory coronavirus-2 (SARS-Co-2) is the causative agent of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). COVID-19 is a disease with highly variable phenotypes, being asymptomatic in most patients. In symptomatic patients, disease manifestation is variable, ranging from mild disease to severe and critical illness requiring treatment in the intensive care unit. The presence of underlying cardiovascular morbidities was identified early in the evolution of the disease to be a critical determinant of the severe disease phenotype. SARS-CoV-2, though a primarily respiratory virus, also causes severe damage to the cardiovascular system, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality seen in COVID-19. Evidence on the impact of cardiovascular disorders in disease manifestation and outcome of treatment is rapidly emerging. The cardiovascular system expresses the angiotensin-converting enzyme-2, the receptor used by SARS-CoV-2 for binding, making it vulnerable to infection by th...

It is commonly seen in elderly men and usually presents late with complications, especially rupture of aneurysm when grossly enlarged, due to its anatomical location. Herein our case, we presented a 52-year-old woman who complained of 8-month progressive swelling of the left thigh, associated with calf pain and intermittent claudication. Colour duplex scan and MRI were used to diagnose a 12 cm segment of isolated giant atherosclerotic aneurysm of about 8 cm in its transverse diameter of the superficial femoral artery with mural thrombus. She had excision and interposition graft repair, which was uneventful. Imaging plays a vital role in making prompt diagnosis, ruling out other frequent associations such as aortic, iliac and popliteal aneurysms and also for follow up of the patients.
