Research paper thumbnail of ‘NEET’ to work? – substance use disorder and youth unemployment in Norwegian public documents

Routledge eBooks, Jul 12, 2021

We analysed a sample of policy documents inspired by Foucault and Fairclough`s methodology and discussed the results in light of prevailing policy trends within contemporary welfare states and results from relevant research. We found three predominant discourses that tend to govern public opinion in the area: The Medicalisation Discourse, The Stigma Discourse and The Social Investment Discourse. All three can be related to the neoliberal tendency of individualising and medicalising social problems. There seems to be little evidence in epidemiology and other research that substance abuse represents any direct reason for the NEET status among young people. Neither is there any clear evidence that problems with alcohol and drugs among young adults will, in the long run, unambiguously reduce their working capacity. Thus, the identified discourses may contribute to the creation of myths about the NEET population in question.

This article describes the use of emancipatory praxis by engaging students in identifying structural sources of advantages and/or privilege, and reports on the data obtained from the written and oral reports of undergraduate social work students taking part in a teaching session on critical reflexivity at a Norwegian University. The data reveal the power of emancipatory praxis in heightening consciousness of intersecting social criteria, such as nationality, race, gender, religion and sexuality in creating obstacles and/or access to power, status and resources. The article lends voice to the students and details their responses to the exercise.

This model relies on an uncertain scientific basis and does not really allow for the adolescents’ own reflexivity. This article aims at contributing to the shaping of more reflexive concepts for social work in this area, and is based on material derived from a focus group made up of 17 adolescents from Central Norway, aged 16-18 years old. The major foci of analysis were: i) how the adolescents positioned themselves with regard to conflicting notions of respectability, ii) which constructions of meaning might be attached to this positioning and iii) how the positioning might inform social work practice.

Abuse of alcohol and other substances of the kind that may affect school or work life attendance, family relations and housing situation tends to nourish anxiety, disrespect and incorrect conceptions not only in the person`s original social environment but as well in neighborhoods and in systems for human assistance. In spite of general agreement that having something one may call a home is basic to anyone, public campaigns against housing projects for substance abusers in normative residential areas; like the “Not in my backyard“- movement is a well-known international phenomenon. As such, housing practices may serve as a barometer of the general normative climate around alcohol and other substances in a given society. Also teens and young adults who from the outset have been fairly well integrated in normative society seem...

Methods: The article is based on life-course interviews with the mothers, on which we have conducted a content analysis inspired by narrative theory. Results: Results show that whereas the mothers deviated from common expectations of predictability and orderliness before they became mothers, they strived to provide a "good enough" situation for their children in line with expectations in larger society ever after. Nevertheless, the complex disadvantages that the mothers said they had in several life domains concerning social networks and family support, education, working life, housing, and that were apparently already in their transition to adulthood, were likely to increase even after the mothers had decided to enter the mothering role in socially acceptable ways. Conclusions: The article concludes that child welfare services may contribute positively by acknowledging the complexity of young mothers' living context when assessing mothering practices.

Method: We employed a scoping review of international and Norwegian literature and made additional informal literature searches. Results: The prevalence of substance use problems among people with intellectual disability in Norway is uncertain. Research paper thumbnail of Patient Assessments of the Factors Facilitating and Impeding User Involvement During the First Phase of Substance Abuse Treatment

Substance abuse, 2021

User involvement in the first phase of treatment is essential for treatment satisfaction among pa... more User involvement in the first phase of treatment is essential for treatment satisfaction among patients with substance use disorders (SUDs). This study explores how patients perceive the first phase of specialized SUD treatment and identifies what promotes and inhibits user involvement. We used a qualitative approach, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 informants admitted to a substance abuse treatment unit in central Norway. The analysis was inspired by a phenomenographical analysis approach, and 4 categories were identified as the core experiences of user involvement during the first phase of SUD treatment: (a) a new hold on life, (b) missing information, (c) the importance of a sense of community, and (d) ambivalence about the usefulness of the treatment. Overlapping elements with Aaron Antonovsky's theoretical framework of salutogenesis were used to support the main findings. The study indicates that activating personal resources (eg, the ability to envision a different life), conveying information in a matter sensitive to patients' current cognitive state, a sense of community, and therapeutic alliance are essential factors to promote user involvement in the first phase of specialized SUD treatment. Based on the findings, we suggest a salutogenesis approach to promote user involvement and provide several ways to employ this approach in the crucial first phase of specialized SUD treatment.
