In this article, we will discuss the ecclesiastical officials (bishops of Smolensk, archimandrites and ihumens of monasteries, clergymen of churches – priests and deacons) of one region, the Land of Smolensk, during the period when this region was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, from 1395 to 1514. The focus will be placed on three aspects: the time of the appearance of the ecclesiastical officials in the Land of Smolensk, their prerogatives, and the nomination procedure. , KEYWORDS: Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Land of Smolensk, Orthodox Church, ecclesiastical officials.

The research was designed to examine how the Grand Dukes of Lithuania formed the judiciary in the entire GDL and what features of it were typical in various regions of the state. It was mainly based on the land and regionai privileges, which the Grand Dukes of Lithuania granted in 1387–1529, as well as on earlier historical sources that could help identify archaic judiciary manifestations in different regions of the GDL. The research showed that little attention was paid to the judiciary in the first land privileges. Moreover, the land privileges, that had appeared up to the thirties of the 15th century, were given only to Catholic, but not Orthodox nobles. Therefore, in the Orthodox regions of the GDL legal customs retained their importance. More favourable conditions to unify the judiciary at the state level appeared only in the thirties and forties of the 15th century. Since ...

The research revealed that the nomination procedure of Vitebsk leading officials (vicegerents and palatines) was set forth in the privileges granted by the Grand Duke of Lithuania to the land of Vitebsk. Speaking of the city’s lower officials, however, judgments of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund the Old were the only documents stipulating for their nomination procedure. The first half of the 16th century saw the attempts of Vitebsk palatines to expand their jurisdiction and assume the procedure of lower official appointment. This, however, caused dissatisfaction among the citizens. Therefore, Sigismund the Old passed a few judgments to ensure that palatines had no say in the nomination of Vitebsk officials. This right was reserved exceptionally for the sovereign of Lithuania. Sigismund Augustus, who succeeded Sigismund the Old as the Grand Duke of Lithuania, allowe...

On 4 October 1498 Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander Jagiellon (1492 –1506) issued to Polotsk the Magdeburgian charter.1 This event predetermined many important chan ges in this city. One of them was birth of new local officials – the „voigt”, „land voigt”, burgomasters, councilors and benchers. The historiography related to the social history of Polotsk and the applica tion of Magdeburg Law in the 15th –16th centuries is rather abundant.2 How ever, there are no researches in which the officials of the city of Polotsk were researched using the prosopographical method. It is not surprising because such research would need an enduring and thorough work with written sour ces. Belarusian historian Vasili Varonin started this work and prepared the list

It is said in historiography that when the core lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania became Christian in 1387, the Europeanisation process started in the state. But little account is taken of the differences between its political nucleus and the peripheral regions, which consisted of Ruthenian lands. The article investigates whether the Europeanisation process in the Ruthenian lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania really started after 1387. It also aims to find out which European region or regions those lands could be assigned to. For this, it seeks to clarify in the article how Europe was understood in the 13th to 16th centuries, and what kind of changes took place in the Ruthenian lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during that time. KEYWORDS: Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Kievan Rus’, Europe, Europeanisation, westernisation.
