The understanding of the dynamic phenomena which occurred on a landscape scale was necessary in order to establish a total diagnosis of the processes of degradation or restoration in this area. This article presents the results of the study of the changes in land cover, land use and "quality" of the rangelands (in relation with the pastoral value of the steppes) in the Menzel Habib region from 1975 to 2000 thanks to former and recent works undertaken by various authors. To achieve this goal, the mapping of vegetation sequences and ecological systems realised in 1975 was updated in 2000 thanks to an approach coupling the use of the satellite images (photo-interpretation and extrapolation) with the field data allowing the precise characterization of the biophysical parameters. It can be determined the climatic potential conditions in the various regions and utilize them to a large extent by investigating in agro-meteorology. In this research, it has been applied the Geographic Information System to generate the climatic potential maps for Zanjan Province. To this purpose, the 30-year statistical records of climatology and synoptic stations have been used in the province of Zanjan. It was determined the date of cultivation for each section of the province after obtaining the beginning date of autumn precipitations for each part of the province. In the next step, the rainfall element was used for producing the isohyets climatic maps of annual rainfall, rainfall in the germination, blossoming, and ripe periods. The isotherm climatic maps of germination’s suitable temperature, thermal tensions during the blossoming, ripe periods we...

Climatic variability and land use changes have caused considerable changes in vegetation units and in the structure of ecological systems during the past 25 years. About 10% of the steppe area has been taken over by agriculture, shrinking perennial plant cover has led to the appearance and dominance of a highly degraded vegetation class (perennial plant cover 5%), and floristic composition transformation has occurred as unpalatable species encroached the area. Studies to monitor the ecosystem dynamics in arid southern Tunisia during the past three decades provided reliable indicators of steppe degradation and the need for long-term ecological monitoring to assess desertification processes.
