Quality and quantify of dietary fats have long been recognized to play a crucial role in several metabolic disorders such as cancer, coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity and hypertension. It influences serum lipid profile, which normally should have low cholesterol, low triglycerides, low LDL-cholesterol and a high HDL-cholesterol. Ideally, SFA, MUFA and PUFA in diet should not exceed 8-10%, 10-20%, and 10%, respectively. The oil and its blend with such a fatty acid profile, which is virtually non-existent in nature, are expected to have health benefits. We have been able to prepare a binary oil blend with a fatty acid profile quite close to the recommended one, using rice bran oil and palm oil. Serum lipid profile and retinols of rats fed with this blend (called Blend-RP) was studied to evaluate the effect of the blend on parameters associated with the risk of c...

In the present study, a 50% ethanolic extract of the rhizomes of N. jatamansi (at a dose of 800 mg/kg body weight, daily) is shown the marked reversal effect on thioacetamide induced liver cirrhosis in experimental animal model. Liver cirrhosis was characterized biochemically by measuring the activity level of -glutamyl transpeptidase, alkaline phosphatase and other biochemical parameters reported to change in cirrhosis. When compared to the group of rats having cirrhosis, test extract treated group showed significant decrease in the level of gamma -glutamyl transpeptidase, alkaline phosphatase, lipid peroxidation, glutathione-s-transferase and xanthine oxidase. An improvement in the activity level of glutathione reductase, and glutathione peroxidase was also observed. Tripeptide antioxidant reduced glutathione le...

Physiological changes in circadian rhythm (cerebral autoregulation, vascular tone, blood pressure, coagulation profile) are thought to predispose to WUS. Aim: Our objective is to identify the characteristics WUS amongst the Arab population. Methods: We retrospectively assessed consecutive stroke patients of the Acute Stroke Unit of King Fahad Medical City; Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, presenting within five days of symptom onset from November 2010 to August 2012. The patient's demographics, risk factors, stroke volumes (ABC/2 method), location, etiology (TOAST criteria), and functional status (NIHSS, BI, GOS score) were assessed. WUS was grouped into Group A (0:00-06:00), B (06:01-12:00), C (12:01-23:59) based on the "wake up" time. Statistical analysis was done using SAS version 9.2. Results: Of 236 patients fulfilling the criteria 219 had an ischemic stroke. Of those, 65(29.7%...

This condition remains under-reported due to ethical and psychological reasons. Diagnosis of penile fracture is mainly based on clinical features. MRI of the penis is an expensive test that is not always superior to clinical examination or ultrasound. However, it shows many of the important structures and in particular the high-resolution T (2) sequences show the glans, corpora and the tunica albuginea well. Our aim was to review whether MRI helped in early diagnosis and thereby helping in restoring potency. Material and methods: From May 2009 to October 2013, 6 patients with fracture penis were treated at our institute. Mean age of patients was 32.83 years, range from 24 to 43. All the patients presented after 6 hours of injury. Results: Patients who presented early had good IIEF score at three months compared to those who presented late. MRI helped in diagnosing the fracture in two cases, which would have otherwise been treated conservatively. Conclusions: Rupture of the corpus cavernosum is a rare condition and is generally diagnosed by clinical findings. Emergency surgical exploration and treatment is the best guarantee of good functional and cosmetic result.

With the advent of radiological imaging the presenting triad of fever, haematuria and abdominal mass is rarely seen. Osseous metastases of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are the second most frequent location after lung metastases. They rarely present as isolated location. We present here a case of Renal Cell Carcinoma presenting as fracture of right humerus.

A number of methods of treatment of bladder outflow obstruction have been proposed over the years, but transurethral prostatectomy remains the standard by which all others must be judged. [1] Open prostatectomy (OP) and monopolar TURP are still the procedures utilized by most urologists, however, laser therapy is emerging as a commonly used technique. [2] In recent years further developments in the surgical treatment of bladder outlet obstruction have been developed, which include laser enucleation, transurethral vaporization, bipolar TURP, [3] transrectal high intensity focused ultrasound and transurethral microwave thermotherapy. These new methods of treatment of bladder outlet obstruction have attempted to reduce morbidity and length of stay associated with traditional transurethral resection of the prostate. Meta-analysis comparing HoLEP with both OP and transurethral resection Introduction: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common disease accounting for 30% of our OPD cases and about 25% of our surgery cases. Various treatment options are now available for more efficient care and early return to work. We wanted to determine the safety and feasibility of day care monopolar transurethral resection of prostate (m-TURP), by admitting the patients on the day of surgery and discharging the patient without catheter on the same day. We also compared the morbidity associated with conventional TURP where in the catheter is removed after 24-48 h of surgery and day care TURP where in the catheter is removed on the day of surgery. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 patients who fulfilled the criteria were included in the study which was conducted between November 2008 and December 2010. A total of 60 patients were assigned for day care and 60 for conventional monopolar TURP. There was no significant difference in age, prostatic volume or IPSS score. Day care patients were admitted on day of surgery and discharged the same day after the removal of catheter. Results: Both the groups were comparable in outcome. Stricture rate was less with day care TURP. Mean catheterization time was similar to laser TURP. Conclusion: Monopolar TURP is still the gold standard of care for BPH. If cases are selected properly and surgery performed diligently it remains the option of choice for small and medium sized glands and patients can be back to routine work early.

Elastography techniques are being developed to diagnose and monitor the progression and treatment... more Elastography techniques are being developed to diagnose and monitor the progression and treatment of diseases that correlate with changes in soft tissue stiffness. The objective of this paper is to outline the application of vibrations to the human cornea in order to reconstruct a stiffness map. Having a localized stiffness map is useful for early diagnosis of cornea related diseases such as glaucoma and keratoconus. Experimental data was collected by directly vibrating the excised cornea axisymetrically along the edge and measuring wave propagation inward with the use of laser vibrometry. Different methods have been implemented to increase the reflectivity of the cornea for laser vibrometry. To corroborate the data, as well as to test feasibility, experiments have been done on phantoms constructed from silicone-based polymers. To reconstruct the data into a stiffness map, an appropriate analytical model has to be derived. This paper outlines the derivation of the analytical model for the cornea starting with simple circular plates and moving towards the curved geometry of the cornea. To verify the analytical model, finite element simulations were used to replicate the results. These results have also been checked against experimental data to help determine any external variables that affect results. Overall, the feasibility and application of a process has been determined. Future goals include increasing in-vivo application to make the process safe and cost-effective.

Sixteen amino acids were tested for the growth of L. monocytogenes. Most strains required cystine, valine, isoleucine, and leucine. Phenylalanine was a stimulatory growth factor for all six strains of Listeria. Whilst tryptophan was essentially required by NCTC 7973, LM and C-286 and stimulatory for 4155 and C-294, none of the strains did exhibit requirements of asparagine, glutamine, proline, histidine and tyrosine as essential/stimulatory growth factor.
