On the performativity of theory in the context of Performance Philosophy-The dialogue discusses the role presence could be permitted to play in academic situations of co-presence with others (in comparison to the importance of presence in artistic contexts). It ponders the extent to which conventional academic forms, quite apart from seeking to guarantee objectivity in theory, actually predetermine , or in fact limit, the communicability of theoretical content. The conversation points to the need for a new dramaturgical attentiveness to the performativity of theory and calls for an innovative approach to the formats in which the questions and results concerning various fields in the humanities could be presented and negotiated more successfully.

Encounters in Performance Philosophy, 2014

The internally transcending aspect of the impossible is shown to be crucial for outplaying rigid paradigms. Yet it also presents a unique challenge to thinking. Their conversation evokes various paradoxical strategies by which to touch the ungraspable: from longing for the neutral (Barthes), to the magnification of reality through secrecy (Simmel), from roaming wondering around the figure of the closed fist (Derrida), to the emphasis of expressive difference (Blumenberg), or the revelation that emerges via concealment (Heidegger). Such strategies are gradually revealed to be performative in themselves and through them, Performance Philosophy suggests itself as a way of caring for the impossible without rendering it mysterious. Lagaay and Koubová document this statement by reference to their own philosophy and performance practices. The performative effect of the dialogue brings the impossible to glimmer between non-unified strands of thought, ranging from the idea of ludic peace and playful indifference on the one hand, to the necessary experience of thinking and living with paradoxes, on the other.

Research paper thumbnail of Minding the Gap – of Indifference: Approaching ‘Performance Philosophy’ with Salomo Friedlaender (1871-1946)

Performance Philosophy

The concept of "Creative Indifference" put forward by Salomo Friedlaender in his 1918 m... more The concept of "Creative Indifference" put forward by Salomo Friedlaender in his 1918 magnum opus, Schöpferische Indifferenz, provides much food for thought from a Performance Philosophy perspective. Friedlaender's work, which has been largely overlooked by academic philosophers until now, was in fact hugely influential in expressionist Dada circles at the time of its publication. It also contributed to shaping Gestalt Therapy theories and practice, thereby relating to a number of bodywork movements that continue to inform performance practice and Performance Philosophy alike. In this short text, Alice Lagaay begins to explore the manner in which Friedlaender/Mynona can be seen as a Performance Philosopher “avant la lettre”, and how the notion of "Creative Indifference” might be fruitful in the ongoing "Mind-the-Gap”- debate relating to the relation between “Performance" and "Philosophy".
