Nano reinforcements including carbon nano tubes (CNTs) and nano diamonds (NDs) were reinforced in the epoxy matrix along with carbon fibers to fabricate composite face sheets. The micro-nano composites were characterized mechanically and micro structurally by tensile testing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Uniform dispersion of both the nano-fillers was ensured by microscopic techniques. It was found that a uniform dispersion and distribution of nano reinforcement led to an increase in the mechanical performance of the composites.

The crystal structure of [(CH3)3Sn(C13H7O3F2)] indicates that the tin atom in the asymmetric unit exists in a trigonal bipyramidal geometry having a space group Pbca with an orthorhombic crystal system. These complexes were also screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. The complexes 1 and 2 were also characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction which revealed that the Pd(II) atom adopted a nearly square planar geometry with two trip -tolyphosphine molecules bound in a trans fashion and also two pyridine-2(1H)-thione (1) or pyrimidine-2(1H)-thione (2) molecules trans to each other. The compounds were tested for antibacterial activity, DNA interaction by brine shrimp lethality bioassay, antitumor activity, and gel electrophoresis. The complexes demonstrated moderate activity against gram positive and gram negative bacterial strains in comparison with a standard drug imipenum. Their antitumor activity against MCF7 tumor cell line was determined to be comparable to that of doxorubicin. The investigated compounds demonstrated no cytotoxic effect in brine shrimp bioassay study.
Biological parameters of Papilio demoleus Linnaeus, the Citrus Butterfly, in Tando Muhammad Khan,... more Biological parameters of Papilio demoleus Linnaeus, the Citrus Butterfly, in Tando Muhammad Khan, lower Sindh, Pakistan are presented. This major agricultural pest was reared on Murraya koenigii (L.) Spreng. (Curry Leaf) and ten different varieties of Citrus sp. (Citrus) plants. The length of the adult mating period ranged 5 to 8 hours. Following mating, females laid 27.7 ± 3.3 eggs. Eggs hatched in 1.5 to 7 days. Mean durations of larval instars were 1.8 ± 0.1 (minimum) and 2.9 ± 0.1 (maximum) days respectively. Pupal duration was 5.5 to 20 days. Biotic factors including predators [praying mantis, ants, Common Garden Lizard (Calotes versicolor)] and parasitoids [Trichogramma chilonis, Pteromalus puparum] played a significant role in mortality in all stages of the butterfly. Survival in most life stages had a negative correlation with temperature. Thirteen generations of P. demoleus per year were recorded. The individual E-glass fibres as well as rovings were coated with a carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced epoxy composite. The tensile strengths were measured for the individual and bundle fibres, which were treated statistically to determine the Weibull parameters and thus to evaluate the notch sensitivity of the fibres with and without coating. The results indicate that the tensile strength of the individual fibre increased by 10% after coating with neat epoxy. Coating with epoxy nanocomposite containing 0.3wt% MWNT further improved the tensile strength. However, increasing the nanotube content was not necessarily beneficial due to the formation of nanotube agglomerates within the matrix. The tensile tests on fibre roving also showed a clear trend of beneficial effect of n...

The influence of nanoclay on the impact damage resistance of carbon fiber-epoxy (CFRP) composites... more The influence of nanoclay on the impact damage resistance of carbon fiber-epoxy (CFRP) composites has been investigated using the low-velocity impact and compression after impact tests. The load-energy vs time relations were analyzed to gain insight into the damage behaviors of the materials. Compression-after-impact (CAI) test was performed to measure the residual compressive strength. The CFRPs containing organoclay brought about a significant improvement in impact damage resistance and damage tolerance. The composites containing organoclay exhibited an enhanced energy absorption capability with less damage areas and higher CAI strengths compared to those made from neat epoxy. A 3wt% phr was shown to be an optimal content with the highest damage resistance.

The reflectivities at 1 = 0.154 nm are increased going from W-TIN, Cr-Sc, W-Ti to W-Sc multilayers. Cr-Sc mirrors have highest reflectivity and resolution at A = 3.16nm. Influence of the ambient atmosphere on optical properties of multilayer mirrors is shown.

The living character (expressed by the ratio k0/kt) of the cationic ring-opening polymerization o... more The living character (expressed by the ratio k0/kt) of the cationic ring-opening polymerization of N-substituted aziridines is strongly influenced by the number and the bulkiness of the substituents on the monomer. Thus, N-tert.butyl aziridine (TBA) has a k/kt value of iO' l.mol1 compared with 80 for N-isopropyl aziridine and 4 for N-ethylaziridine. P0lymerization of TBA initiated by methyl trifluoromethylsulfonate (methyltriflate) in a mixture of THF and HMPT allows to prepare poly-TBA with well defined molecular weight (up to 100,000) and of low dispersity. The thus obtained polymers giye a slow termination reaction which obeys first order kinetics and during which the molecular weight of the polymer remains unchanged. It is therefore assumed to be an intramolecular attack of the growing species by an amino function of its own polymer chain. Because the termination is very slow compared with propagation, it is possible to react the aziridinium ions which are the active chain ends, with a nucleophile before the termination becomes important. This reaction was first checked with a model compound (N-methyl-N-tert.butyl aziridinium tnflate) and was then carried out with living poly-TBA. In this way a number of poly-TBA's with different functional end groups were synthesized. They were characterized by 360 MHz 'H NMR spectroscopy and by GPC. If the nucleophile is part of another polymer chain, block or graft copolymers containing poly-TBA segments are obtained. Other aziridines showing a high living character are N-substituted propylenimines. Also with these monomers, polymers with predictable molecular weight and well defined end groups can be synthesized. This kind of chemistry allows to form a great variety of block-and graft copolymers containing polyamine segments.

The Mechanical properties and fracture behavior of nanocomposites and carbon fiber composites (CF... more The Mechanical properties and fracture behavior of nanocomposites and carbon fiber composites (CFRPs) containing organoclay in the epoxy matrix have been investigated. Morphological studies using TEM and XRD revealed that the clay particles within the epoxy resin were intercalated or orderly exfoliated. The organoclay brought about a significant improvement in flexural modulus, especially in the first few wt% of loading, and the improvement of flexural modulus was at the expense of a reduction in flexural strength. The quasi-static fracture toughness increased, whereas the impact fracture toughness dropped sharply with increasing the clay content. Flexural properties of CFRPs containing organoclay modified epoxy matrix generally followed the trend similar to the epoxy nanocomposite although the variation was much smaller for the CFRPs. Both the initiation and propagation values of model I interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP composites increased with increasing clay concentration. In particular, the propagation fracture toughness almost doubled with 7wt% clay loading. A strong correlation was established between the fracture toughness of organoclay-modified epoxy matrix and the CFRP composite interlaminar fracture toughness.

Reduction of the cyano groups with borane-dimethyl sulfide in tetrahydrofuran or a borane-tetrahydrofuran complex proceeds quantitatively in 3 h to a corresponding 3-aminopropylcellulose. The presence of primary amine functions is confirmed by spectroscopy and a positive ninhydrin test; the concentration of amino substituents, as ascertained by titration, ranged from 1.2 to 6.4 meq/g. Because the derivatives are neither soluble nor excessively swollen in water, applications as ionexchange resins or chromatographic supports can be envisioned. Treatment of 3-aminopropylcellulose with acetyl chloride, phenyl isocyanate, or p-toluenesulfonyl isocyanate produced 3-acetamido-, 3-(N'-pheny1uredo)-, or 3-(N'-p-toluenesulfonyluredo)-N-propylcellulose. Alkylation with methyl chloride yielded a water-soluble quaternary ammonium salt.
