The supply system of the enterprise is increasingly linked to the consistency of information, symbolic and sense assets. The organization of space, material and immaterial, leads to the creation of specific atmospheres in which displaying all the products means highlighting their main symbolic value. Through a skillful knowledge of the structures of perception, interpretation and motivation which underlie the mode of experiencing space-coupled with the ability of design to define its shape and significance-the visual merchandising project is able to lead the public through the brand's new narrative experiences .

The amount of knowledge required by hematologists to identify the best course of treatment for a patient in this field is changing rapidly and has fueled an explosion of new drugs that target pathways virtually unknown a decade ago. We are now also entering an era of effective immunotherapy for a variety of hematologic malignancies, but the long term outcomes and toxicities of these treatment approaches are still unknown. This first edition in English is a significant novelty in the history of this work. Its underlying goals, however, remain the same of the first Italian edition: to help students and specialists understand the basis, treatment and management of hematologic diseases.

Questo testo raccoglie parte del materiale didattico utilizzato nei corsi di Meccanica Applicata ... more Questo testo raccoglie parte del materiale didattico utilizzato nei corsi di Meccanica Applicata e Meccatronica svolti presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria di Firenze. Esigenza comune di questi corsi era la necessità di fornire allo studente nozioni minime relative al funzionamento ed alla modellazione di alcuni dei più comuni sistemi di azionamento utilizzati in robotica, automazione e trazione di veicoli. Gli argomenti trattati sono un sotto-insieme di quella disciplina che dagli anni ’70 in poi viene definita meccatronica. In particolare sono inserite nozioni utili alla comprensione del funzionamento ed alla modellazione di alcune tipologie di attuatori elettrici, oleodinamici e pneumatici comunemente utilizzati in automazione. Alcune nozioni introduttive relative a meccanica delle trasmissioni, sensoristica, ed elettronica industriale sono inserite a complemento. In questa seconda edizione del 2015 alcune parti sono state emendate ed ampliate con particolare riferimento alla necessità di aggiornare il testo rispetto ai contenuti del corso. Trattandosi delle prime edizioni di un testo prodotto a partire da materiale didattico eterogeneo gli autori desiderano ringraziare tutti coloro che vorranno segnalare sviste ed inesattezze sicuramente presenti anche in questa seconda edizione che risulta ampliata rispetto alla precedente di oltre 100 pagine.

Spindle cell (or pseudosarcomatous) squamous carcinoma (PSC) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the ... more Spindle cell (or pseudosarcomatous) squamous carcinoma (PSC) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the esophagus, potentially capable of causing lymph node and distant metastases. Indications for surgery are the same as for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the esophagus. The aims of this paper were to report a case of endoscopically treated PSC and to review our experience of surgically-treated patients with PSC in order to identify patients potentially suitable for endoscopic treatment. In our series of 4,460 patients with carcinoma of the esophagus observed between 1980 and 2003, 28 (0.6%) had the histological features of PSC. One had a PSC histologically confirmed (8cm-long polyp with a 3cm-large base) and endoscopically treated for high surgical risk. The patient had a close follow-up with endoscopic biopsies and ultrasonography with no local recurrence at 3 years. The overall survival rate was 22% for PSC and 17% for SCC (P = n.s.); after 5 years, the survival rates were 22% and 13%, respectively (P = n.s.). In our opinion the limited tendency to parietal infiltration and the good chance of disclosure in an early stage with endoscopic ultrasonography, justify non-surgical solutions in patients with a high surgical risk, possibly associated with adjuvant chemo- and radiotherapy since lymph node involvement is reported in 50% of cases. The limited number of patients with PSC involved in the present series prevent any significant statistical comparisons between the different groups, but the survival rates were roughly the same in the nonsurgical curative therapy as in the curative resection group, while the chances of survival were significantly lower in patients given palliative surgery and or non-curative treatments (P < 0.05).

Differential and Integral Quadrature. Strong Form Finite Elements " illustrates the theme treated and the prospective followed during the composition of the present work. The aim of this manuscript is to analyze the static and dynamic behavior of thick and moderately thick composite shells through the application of the Differential Quadrature (DQ) method. The book is divided into two volumes wherein the principal higher order structural theories are illustrated in detail and the mechanical behavior of doubly-curved structures are presented by several static and dynamic numerical applications. In particular, the first volume is mainly theoretical , whereas the second one is mainly related to the numerical DQ technique and its applications in the structural field. The numerical results reported in the present volume are compared to the one available in the literature, but also to the ones obtained through several codes based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). Furthermore, an advanced version of the DQ method, termed Strong Formulation Finite Element Method (SFEM), is presented. The SFEM solves the differential equations inside each element in the strong form and implements the mapping technique typical of the FEM.

The starting point to analyze higher-order structural theories is given by the so-called Unified Formulation (UF), which allows to consider and study several kin-ematic models in a unified manner. Both the Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) and Layer Wise (LW) approaches are presented. A particular attention is paid to composite materials, due to their increasing development and use in many engineering fields during the last years.

Differential equations play a relevant role in many disciplines and provide powerful tools for an... more Differential equations play a relevant role in many disciplines and provide powerful tools for analysis and modeling in applied sciences. The book contains several classical and modern methods for the study of ordinary and partial differential equations. A broad space is reserved to Fourier and Laplace transforms together with their applications to the solution of boundary value and/or initial value problems for differential equations. Basic prerequisites concerning analytic functions of complex variable and L p spaces are synthetically presented in the first two chapters. Techniques based on integral transforms and Fourier series are presented in specific chapters, first in the easier framework of integrable functions and later in the general framework of distributions. The less elementary distributional context allows to deal also with differential equations with highly irregular data and pulse signals. The theory is introduced concisely, while learning of miscellaneous methods is achieved step-by-step through the proposal of many exercises of increasing difficulty. Additional recap exercises are collected in dedicated sections. Several tables for easy reference of main formulas are available at the end of the book. The presentation is oriented mainly to students of Schools in Engineering, Sciences and Economy. The partition of various topics in several self-contained and independent sections allows an easy splitting in at least two didactic modules: one at undergraduate level, the other at graduate level.
Deep comprehension of applied sciences requires a solid knowledge of Mathematical Analysis. For m... more Deep comprehension of applied sciences requires a solid knowledge of Mathematical Analysis. For most of high level scientific research, the good understanding of Functional Analysis and weak solutions to differential equations is essential. This book aims to deal with the main topics that are necessary to achieve such a knowledge. Still, this is the goal of many other texts in advanced analysis; and then, what would be a good reason to read or to consult this book? In order to answer this question, let us introduce the three Authors. Alberto Ferrero got his degree in Mathematics in 2000 and presently he is researcher in Mathematical Analysis at the Universit`a del Piemonte Orientale. Filippo Gazzola got his degree in Mathematics in 1987 and he is now full professor in Mathematical Analysis at the Politecnico di Milano. Maurizio Zanotti got his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2004 and presently he is structural and machine designer and lecturer professor in Mathematical Analysis at the Politecnico di Milano.
The three Authors, for the variety of their skills, decided to join their expertises to write this book. One of the reasons that should encourage its reading is that the presentation turns out to be a reasonable compromise among the essential mathematical rigor, the importance of the applications and the clearness, which is necessary to make the reference work pleasant to the readers, even to the inexperienced ones. The range of treated topics is quite wide and covers the main basic notions of the scientific research which is based upon mathematical models. We start from vector spaces and Lebesgue integral to reach the frontier of theoretical research such as the study of critical exponents for semilinear elliptic equations and recent problems in fluid dynamics. This long route passes through the theory of Banach and Hilbert spaces, Sobolev spaces, differential equations, Fourier and Laplace transforms, before which we recall some appropriate tools of Complex Analysis. We give all the proofs that have some didactic or applicative interest, while we omit the ones which are too technical or require too high level knowledge. This book has the ambitious purpose to be useful to a broad variety of readers. The first possible beneficiaries are of course the second or third year students of a scientific course of degree: in what follows they will find the topics that are necessary to approach more advanced studies in Mathematics and in other fields, especially Physics and Engineering. This text could be also useful to graduate students who want to start a Ph.D. course: indeed it contains the matter of a multidisciplinary Ph.D. course given by Filippo Gazzola for several years at Politecnico di Milano. Finally, this book could be addressed also to the ones who have already left education far-back but occasionally need to use mathematical tools: we refer both to university professors and their research, and to professionals and designers who want to model a certain phenomenon, but also to the nostalgics of the good old days when they were students. It is precisely for this last type of reader that we have also reported some elementary topics, such as the properties of numerical sets and of the integrals; moreover, every chapter is provided with examples and specific exercises aimed at the involvement of the reader. Let us start immediately inviting the reader to find an “anomaly” among the six formulas appearing in the cover. This book is the translation from Italian of the book ”Elementi di Analisi Superiore per la Fisica e l’Ingegneria”. The translation is due to Ilaria Lucardesi.

In order to answer this question, let us introduce the three Authors. Alberto Ferrero got his degree in Mathematics in 2000 and presently he is researcher in Mathematical Analysis at the Universit`a del Piemonte Orientale. Filippo Gazzola got his degree in Mathematics in 1987 and he is now full professor in Mathematical Analysis at the Politecnico di Milano. Maurizio Zanotti got his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2004 and presently he is structural and machine designer and lecturer professor in Mathematical Analysis at the Politecnico di Milano.
The three Authors, for the variety of their skills, decided to join their expertises to write this book. One of the reasons that should encourage its reading is that the presentation turns out to be a reasonable compromise among the essential mathematical rigor, the importance of the applications and the clearness, which is necessary to make the reference work pleasant to the readers, even to the inexperienced ones. The range of treated topics is quite wide and covers the main basic notions of the scientific research which is based upon mathematical models. We start from vector spaces and Lebesgue integral to reach the frontier of theoretical research such as the study of critical exponents for semilinear elliptic equations and recent problems in fluid dynamics. This long route passes through the theory of Banach and Hilbert spaces, Sobolev spaces, differential equations, Fourier and Laplace transforms, before which we recall some appropriate tools of Complex Analysis. We give all the proofs that have some didactic or applicative interest, while we omit the ones which are too technical or require too high level knowledge. This book has the ambitious purpose to be useful to a broad variety of readers. The first possible beneficiaries are of course the second or third year students of a scientific course of degree: in what follows they will find the topics that are necessary to approach more advanced studies in Mathematics and in other fields, especially Physics and Engineering. This text could be also useful to graduate students who want to start a Ph.D. course: indeed it contains the matter of a multidisciplinary Ph.D. course given by Filippo Gazzola for several years at Politecnico di Milano. Finally, this book could be addressed also to the ones who have already left education far-back but occasionally need to use mathematical tools: we refer both to university professors and their research, and to professionals and designers who want to model a certain phenomenon, but also to the nostalgics of the good old days when they were students. It is precisely for this last type of reader that we have also reported some elementary topics, such as the properties of numerical sets and of the integrals; moreover, every chapter is provided with examples and specific exercises aimed at the involvement of the reader. Let us start immediately inviting the reader to find an “anomaly” among the six formulas appearing in the cover. Esigenza comune di questi corsi era la necessità di fornire allo studente nozioni minime relative al funzionamento ed alla modellazione di alcuni dei più comuni sistemi di azionamento utilizzati in robotica, automazione e trazione di veicoli. Gli argomenti trattati sono un sotto-insieme di quella disciplina che dagli anni ’70 in poi viene definita meccatronica. In particolare sono inserite nozioni utili alla comprensione del funzionamento ed alla modellazione di alcune tipologie di attuatori elettrici, oleodinamici e pneumatici comunemente utilizzati in automazione. Alcune nozioni introduttive relative a meccanica delle trasmissioni, sensoristica, ed elettronica industriale sono inserite a complemento. In questa seconda edizione del 2015 alcune parti sono state emendate ed ampliate con particolare riferimento alla necessità di aggiornare il testo rispetto ai contenuti del corso. Trattandosi delle prime edizioni di un testo prodotto a partire da materiale didattico eterogeneo gli autori desiderano ringraziare tutti coloro che vorranno segnalare sviste ed inesattezze sicuramente presenti anche in questa seconda edizione che risulta ampliata rispetto alla precedente di oltre 100 pagine.

The development of these optical sources was followed in the 1970s by the large-scale deployment of optical fibers, as a medium for information transmission by means of light beams. In the years that followed, scientific research and constant technological development fostered a revolution in the telecommunications field. The association of photonics with other disciplines opened new horizons, unimaginable just a few decades ago. This volume, as it contains material intended for prospective telecommunications and electronic engineers who are going to professionally design optics-based devices and subsystems, it also presents the basic notions to approach further disciplines with which photonics may pro tably interact.
E’ particolarmente faticoso seguire la rapida evoluzione delle conoscenze in tutti i campi e l’em... more E’ particolarmente faticoso seguire la rapida evoluzione delle conoscenze in tutti i campi e l’ematologia non fa eccezione. A distanza di quattro anni dalla precedente edizione, molti capitoli del libro sono stati rivisti e aggiornati. I biologi cellulari e quelli molecolari ogni giorno pubblicano risultati che illuminano molte volte il buio che avvolgeva causa e decorso di molte malattie ematologiche. Oggi siamo in grado di renderci conto del perché molte malattie resistono alle terapie correnti.
La farmacologia affianca l’evoluzione delle conoscenze biologiche e prepara farmaci sempre più selettivi per le diverse patologie. Risultato: meno tossicità (inutile) nei nostri programmi terapeutici e più efficacia. Per molte malattie tumorali ematologiche oggi si parla, con il supporto dei risultati, di guarigione. Questo significa che non ci si può più accontentare di fare la diagnosi ma è necessario approfondire le diverse peculiarità dei pazienti che vengono etichettati con la stessa denominazione. Non esiste più il mieloma multiplo, ma tanti mielomi multipli e l’affinamento della diagnosi porta all’impiego di terapie sempre più personalizzate e sempre più efficaci. Anche e, soprattutto per questi motivi, il numero dei miei Collaboratori, che hanno reso possibile questa nuova edizione, sono aumentati. La mole delle conoscenze è talmente aumentata che sarebbe quanto meno un atto di presunzione preparare da solo un manuale delle malattie del sangue. Ho inoltre inserito nel testo un’appendice che illustra l’approccio alle infezioni in ematologia neoplastica, ricordando che l’infezione è il nemico numero uno e spesso invincibile. Sempre in appendice, un secondo inserto illustra concetti basilari su come si conduce una ricerca clinica e quali sono le varie fasi della ricerca che portano al risultato finale. Infine, Andrea Bontadini, autore del capitolo dedicato alla trasfusione del sangue, firma il suo contributo sottolineando come il progresso delle conoscenze in questo campo sia stato tale dal renderlo autonomo rispetto all’intero testo. Mi auguro, cari studenti, che questo manuale vi sia utile per la vostra preparazione di medici, biologi e biotecnologi.

Soprattutto se abbinate con cicli a vapore a recupero (cicli combinati) e impiegando il gas naturale come combustibile primario, esse costituiscono oggi l'opzione più efficiente, economica ed rispettosa verso l'ambiente per la generazione di potenza elettromeccanica. Il presente testo costituisce un riferimento aggiornato per chi desidera affrontare le numerose tematiche connesse alle turbine a gas e agli impianti da esse derivate. La trattazione parte dai fondamenti termodinamici e dalla discussione sui componenti, per arrivare agli aspetti relativi alle prestazioni e alle applicazioni, all'ottimizzazione del ciclo, alle tecniche di abbattimento emissioni, all'integrazione dei cicli combinati con gassificatori dei combustibili pesanti. Il grado di approfondimento è adeguato per studenti degli insegnamenti che caratterizzano le discipline delle Macchine e dei Sistemi energetici, in Corsi di Studio universitari di primo e secondo livello, dando per acquisita una buona preparazione nella termodinamica applicata e nelle macchine a fluido. L'estensione della trattazione e l'attenzione alle applicazioni ne fanno un supporto adatto anche a corsi più specialistici nel settore dei sistemi energetici e dell'impatto ambientale, e ugualmente interessante per chi opera nel comparto energetico al di fuori dell'ambito universitario. Questa terza edizione del testo contiene un doveroso aggiornamento rispetto a quella precedente, con approfondimenti ed estensioni resi necessari dall'avanzamento tecnologico del settore, quali le nuove tecnologie di raffreddamento delle pale, la micro-cogenerazione, la possibilità di catturare la CO2 prodotta dalla combustione. Sono stati anche introdotti degli approfondimenti sulle emissioni e sulla tecnica delle recenti centrali a carbone (sia con gassificazione che con i classici cicli a vapore), in modo da offrire un panorama completo delle moderne tecnologie della power generation. GIOVANNI LOZZA è professore ordinario di Sistemi per l'energia e l'ambiente, presso il Dipartimento di Energia del Politecnico di Milano. È attualmente (2015) preside della Scuola di Ingegneria industriale e dell'informazione dello stesso Ateneo. È autore di numerose pubblicazioni scientifiche nei settori delle turbine a gas e dei cicli da esse derivati, della gassificazione dei combustibili pesanti, della cattura di CO2 e della produzione di idrogeno da combustibili fossili, della cogenerazione, delle turbomacchine e degli scambiatori di calore. Infatti individuando come uno dei possibili scopi professionali di un architetto quello della libera professione in uno studio associato, ci si propone di fornire allo studente alcuni strumenti che potrebbero essergli utili nella sua futura vita professionale. Tra questi strumenti sembra da privilegiare l’uso del computer e quindi del software numerico. In altra sede lo studente può approfondire la modellazione strutturale, ma qui si vuole mettere a disposizione quella cassetta degli attrezzi matematici che potranno essergli utili anche per il calcolo strutturale. A tale scopo vengono introdotti alcuni concetti di base del calcolo numerico, dedicando ampio spazio alle applicazioni di interesse per lo studente di architettura.
