Entrepreneurship has proven to be a mechanism for poverty reduction through creation of employment opportunities, income as well as wealth. In some occasion entrepreneurs exploit opportunities at the expense of the existing policy to engage in activities that are not economically and socially productive. They neither create wealth nor do they improve on the economic performance of a country. The author conducted survey and interview to solicit for data from small and micro enterprises across Kano state and also used secondary information in analysing the situation in the country. Infrastructural decay, lack of coherent policies and institutional framework were partly responsible for escalating poverty in the Nigeria. Students have different traits which perhaps are responsible for shaping their attitudes. The decision to become self-employed is dependent on so many factors. People become self-employed either because they want to explore an existing opportunity or because there is limited paid employment opportunities. High unemployment rate among graduate is one of the major problems facing government of Nigeria at present. The recent effort by the governments at different levels to encourage youth to become self-employed is an indication of the resolve to redirect students' attitudes toward self-self-employment in the country. At this stage, it is important to ascertain what influence the attitude of students and how they vary in their intention toward self-employment. Survey design was conducted to collect data from final year student of Higher National Diploma (HND) across four schools of Kano State Polytechnic. ...

Thus, both developed and developing countries understand the importance of entrepreneurship education to instil student interest in entrepreneurial action. This study investigates the moderating effect of entrepreneurship education (EEP) on the relationship between attitude (ATT), subjective norms (SNMS), and perceived behavioural control (PBC) towards entrepreneurship intention (EINT) of university undergraduate students. To test the research hypotheses, multiple regression and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used. Multiple regression was used in explaining how well EO predicts microenterprises growth potential. MANOVA compares the groups and indicate whether the mean differences between the groups on the combination of dependent variables are likely to have occurred by chance. Our study contributes to the literature by exploring the growth potential of the existing microenterprises and explains its relationship to owners’ EO in both urban and rural informal sectors.

First, the CE and OL literature is examined, exploring the intra-relationships and processes within each field. Second, the literature that explores the overlapping processes and inter-relationships that link these two fields of research is critiqued. Third, a conceptual framework is presented which underpins future empirical research that explores the possible interactions and synergies between CE and OL.Interest in CE and OL has escalated over the past two decades as, individually, they provide possible ways of addressing contemporary organizational problems, such as the need to constantly encourage and manage strategic change. More recently, there has been interest in the potential links between the two concepts to enhance the effectiveness of each.Definitions, theories and models within CE and OL literature are numerous and diverse. Some of the key contributions are presented, followed by an exploration of how these theories and models relate to each other and how they differ. The complexities and contradictions within both the CE and OL literature are clarified, and it is noted that much theorizing lacks empirical evidence. The paper concludes by presenting a conceptual framework with two related models of the CE/OL relationship. Specific research questions are identified which, if empirically researched, could contribute to a more informed understanding of the complex and dynamic relationship between CE and OL and their impact on strategic change.Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The study aims to investigate the moderating effect of disruption orientation (DO) and government support (GS) on the relationship between coronavirus disease (COVID-19) OD and SMEs' performance.Design/methodology/approachQuantitative survey method was used to collect data from 170 SMEs in Nigeria, through hand-delivery questionnaires. Partial least square (PLS) structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the data.FindingsThe result shows no significant relationship between COVID-19 OD, DO and GS with SMEs' financial performance (FP). However, the relationship between COVID-19 OD and non-financial performance (NFP) is negatively significant. The relationship between DO and NFP is positively significant. DO and GS have insigni...

A survey was conducted at School of Management Studies, Kano State Polytechnic. The population of the study composed of final year HND students in various managerial or administrative programmes. The study selected 312 samples using purposive sampling techniques. The study used theory of planned behavior and Shapero’s model to explain entrepreneurial intentions of the student as used in other study. Regression method was used to examine factors influencing entrepreneurial intention of the students. More so, in order to determine how students differ on their entrepreneurial intention, analysis of variance (ANOVA) has been employed. The results show that perceived desirability has statistically significant relationship with entrepreneurial intention, while the perceived feasibility has no significant relationship with entrepreneurial intention. The result also indicates that both perceived desirability and perceived feasibility are not determinants of students’ entrepreneurial intentions. It is also reveals that there is no statistical difference among the students on their entrepreneurial intention. There is need for future researchers to compare students from entirely different fields on their attitude and entrepreneurial intentions. It is important to policy makers to understand the need to have a variety of entrepreneurship course modules that will enable students to choose areas on their own rather than having same course for every student.

Survey research design was employed to collect data from the selected samples of micro and small entrepreneurs in the state. Questionnaire and interview instruments were used to collect data accordingly. Interview was purposely conducted to complement information obtained through the use of questionnaire by exploring to get more information directly from the selected key informants. Simple linear regression was used to estimate the coefficients of all the variables in the regression model. In spite of high poverty and unemployment in the state, it is discovered that there is no motivation for poor and unemployed people to start up their own business. Therefore, lack of start up capital is found to be a major factor or determinant for entrepreneurship activity. Women were less likely to partake in entrepreneurial activities in comparison to their men counterpart. There is need for the government to revisit the existing microfinance policy so as to address the financial problem of the poor and unemployed. Women should be encouraged to participate in entrepreneurship through training and financial support.

The approach for data collection has been broken down in two in order to address the differences in using different levels of analysis. At the individual level, survey has been used to collect data. Ordinary lease square method was employed in estimating the coefficients of the variables in the model. While at the aggregate level, time series data were collected from various official sources. Vector autoregressive (VAR) framework was adopted to systematically capture the rich dynamic in multiple time series. Start-up capital and gender were found to be statistically significant in influencing entrepreneurship at individual level. It is also evident that most of the entrepreneurs are driven by opportunity to start up business. The result at the aggregate level shows that there is long run relationship among the variables. The positive influence of unemployment on entrepreneurship is an indication of the presence of necessity entrepreneurship. Poverty and economic growth influenced entrepreneurship negatively. Therefore, the paper reveals the presence of both necessity and opportunity entrepreneurship in the country. There is paucity of studies on this area that integrate individual and aggregate level. Therefore, the paper attempts to fill this research gap and to provide holistic information on entrepreneurship in Nigeria context.

The paper uses a qualitative approach to obtain the necessary information from micro and small entrepreneurs. In-depth interviews were conducted to collect data from 25 key informants who own micro and small enterprises that have been in operation for at least five years. The qualitative data was transcribed and presented in a narrative manner. The paper found liquidity constraints to be the most serious problem as most of the entrepreneurs cannot access microfinance from government agencies or microfinance institutions. It is also discovered that the participation of women in entrepreneurship is lower in comparison to their male counterparts. The existing microfinance policy should be revisited to ascertain loopholes that render the policy less effective. Close supervision of the microfinance institutions is needed to ensure compliance to ethical standards and practices in the issuance of credit and loans. To make more generalizable conclusions, similar studies are needed in Nigerian states where the participation of women is low.

Recommendations and future research areas have been discussed in the paper.
