Research paper thumbnail of Sustainable water demand management in the face of rapid urbanization and ground water depletion for social–ecological resilience building

Global Ecology and Conservation, 2017

Necessity of Sustainable water demand management (SWDM) is immensely higher in the rapidly urbani... more Necessity of Sustainable water demand management (SWDM) is immensely higher in the rapidly urbanized mega cities of the world where groundwater depletion and water deficit are taking place perilously. This paper focuses on the present condition of water demand, supply, system loss, pricing strategy, groundwater level, and per capita water consumption of Dhaka city, Bangladesh. The study founds population growth has a large influence on water demand to rise and demand of water is not responsive to the existing pricing rule adopted by DWASA. It emerges that, water demand is increasing at 4% rate an average in the Dhaka city since 1990 and groundwater table goes more than 70 m down in central capital due to extensive withdrawal of water. The study suggests an integrated SWDM approach, which incorporates optimum pricing, ground and surface water regulation, water conservation, sustainable water consumption and less water foot print to ease groundwater depletion. In order to attain sustainability in water demand management (WDM) the study recommends certain criteria under economic, social and environmental segment to administer the increasing water demand of growing population and conserve the fresh water resources of the world's mega cities for social-ecological resilience building.

Three groups of rats (n-6) were experimentally wounded on the back of their neck. Group I was dressed with Vaseline containing 10% test drug, Group II was treated with thin layer of Solcoseryl jelly 10% as reference drug while Group III was dressed with thin layer of blank Vaseline as control group. The effect of vehicle on rate of wound healing were assessed and in all cases there were progressive decreased in wound area with time but wound dress with Vaseline containing S. persica extract and wound treated with Solcosseryl jelly significantly healed earlier than those treated with Vaseline. It is concluded that S. persica extract significantly enhance the acceleration rate of wound enclosure in rats.

Hafnium occurs in combination with zirconium and is a neutron absorber. Therefore, its concentration has to be kept within tolerance limits and monitored throughout the production process. Five Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) laboratories using different techniques measured the concentrations of Zr and Hf with a wide range of results, i.e. more than three times the standard deviation. Therefore, a national intercomparison exercise, ZH-A was conducted to remove discrepancies and improve analytical procedures in the measurement of hafnium and zirconium in zirconium ores. The ZH-A series of reference samples, prepared at the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH), were used for this purpose. It was observed that the measurement errors decrease with an increase in Hf concentration (~298 ppm to 1.75%) for all ...

Aqueous and alcoholic extracts were found to be non-toxic uptil a dose of 1500 mg/kg orally in mice and rats. When injected aqueous extract intravenously, LD50 was 395, 580 mg/kg (flowers) and 700, 925 mg/kg (berries) respectively in mice and rats. It was also observed that alcoholic and aqueous extracts of Melia azedarach have a mild CNS sedative effect.

Candida albicans was isolated from infected human eye and 4 x 10(5) cells of the Candida albicans was injected into the corneal stroma of the eyes of 15 rabbits. All eyes developed a corneal ulcer without pretreatment with immunosuppressive agents. Forty-eight hours after inoculation, the animals were divided into two groups: test group I, 10 eyes receiving notamycin drops in a 5% suspension; control group II, five eyes receiving 0.9% normal saline solution. The rabbits' corneas were removed for Candida albicans recovery and placed in 1 ml of sterile 0.9% normal saline solution, minced within two hours with scalpel and thoroughly homogenized with a piston and mortar Serial dilutions of this corneal solution from 10(-1) - 10(-4) were made in 0.9% sterile saline solution and 100 microl aliquots were plated onto tryptic soy agar. All cultures of ...

Both these amino acids are used as neurotransmitters and also in stabilizing and stimulating the activities of brain, thus resulting in better performance.
