This study examined the relationship between marital satisfaction, religious faith, and political... more This study examined the relationship between marital satisfaction, religious faith, and political orientation for 285 married Christian individuals. Participants completed a survey of three instruments, designed to measure one of the four variables. There was a slight positive correlation between marital satisfaction and religious faith and between religious faith and political orientation on conservative issues; there was a slight negative correlation between religious faith and political orientation on liberal issues. There was no significant correlation between marital satisfaction and political orientation. Of the 285 participants, 76 participants were matched; the 38 married couples were further analyzed finding differences between all spousal scores except conservative issues. Additionally, a linear regression supported earlier research that a husband’s strong religious faith predicted their wife’s marital satisfaction.

This study examined the perceptions and expressions of learning of 18 undergraduate students who ... more This study examined the perceptions and expressions of learning of 18 undergraduate students who participated in case study competitions through qualitative inquiry. The participants articulated learning outcomes based on their participation in a case competition, including enhanced communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills; viewing diversity as an educational benefit; and gaining a deeper understanding of business fields such as consulting. These findings suggest case study competitions are a viable tool for business educators to aid students in preparing for competitive work environments.
The leadership characteristics of a 21 chief student affairs officers (CSAOs) within four-year, p... more The leadership characteristics of a 21 chief student affairs officers (CSAOs) within four-year, postsecondary institutions in the Southeast were examined using The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) developed by Kouzes and Posner. The LPI measures five fundamental leadership factors: challenge the process, inspire a shared vision, enable others to act, model the way, and encourage the heart. Each of these factors was investigated in relation to length of time in the current position, length in the student affairs profession, gender, and geographic location. Statistical analyses of performance on the LPI suggest that CSAOs tend to be most effective in leadership practices of challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. CSAOs seem to be effective in the leadership practices of model the way and inspire a shared vision. Gender and geographic location were not found to be statistically significant to any of the leadership factors.

Many companies have implemented the team approach as a way to empower their employees in an effor... more Many companies have implemented the team approach as a way to empower their employees in an effort to enhance productivity, quality and overall profitability. While application of the concept to higher education administration has been limited, colleges and universities could benefit from the team approach if implemented appropriately and conscientiously. The authors discuss some of the issues and concerns that are relevant to implementing the team approach in an academic environment. Suggestions for implementing teams in higher education are provided, including the difference between the team approach and traditional administration, the importance of a preliminary needs assessment, the development of an implementation plan, the critical role of leadership, dealing with issues of assessment and accountability, and the concept of team efficacy.

Recent corporate and academic scandals have led to decreasing levels of trust and confidence in m... more Recent corporate and academic scandals have led to decreasing levels of trust and confidence in many organizations. Whether the organization is a college or university, a government agency, a private company or a public corporation, the establishment and maintenance of trust is essential to both short-term success and long-term efficacy. This article deals with how managers and leaders can work to establish trust in their organizations via such strategies as fostering behavioural consistency, behavioural integrity, sharing of control, effective communication and demonstration of concern for employees. Also included are strategies of maintaining and enhancing trust, how the level of trust in an organization affects the individual as well as the entire enterprise, and the consequences of losing organizational trust.

Leadership is a key ingredient in the ultimate success or failure of any organization. In this ar... more Leadership is a key ingredient in the ultimate success or failure of any organization. In this article the authors review the research on leadership in general and then focus on how leadership in the academic world is similar to, yet distinct from, leadership in the private sector. Included in this discussion are a description of how leadership in colleges and universities has evolved, the characteristics that are unique to higher education together with their implications for effective leadership, and consideration of the immense challenges academic leaders face as they attempt to keep higher education responsive to the needs of business and industry. The authors also address the emergence of student affairs administration and the current crisis in academic leadership.

To better understand relational dissatisfaction and duration of long-term married couples, this s... more To better understand relational dissatisfaction and duration of long-term married couples, this study surveyed 30 couples married at least 40 years with the Marital Satisfaction Inventory. Findings suggest various areas of dissatisfaction (e.g., affective communication, conflict over child rearing) and relationship among and link to other areas of dissatisfaction (e.g., finances, sex). Most research on marriage focuses on either the dissolution of the relationship or marital satisfaction among couples recently married or married within the last 20 years (Bachand & Caron, 2001; Rosen-Grandon, Myers, & Hattie, 2004). Little has been conducted on the areas of dissatisfaction and difficulties facing long-standing couples (Henry, Miller, & Giarrusso, 2005). This article summarizes the results of a study that identified relationships among factors and areas of dissatisfaction as reported by couples who have been married 40 years or more. Suggestions for brief interventions as well as further research are provided based on the information gleaned from this study. First, we present a brief discussion related to the definition and factors associated with marital satisfaction and marital duration. SuMMARy OF THE RESEARCH Cherlin (2005) stated that "marriage is more prevalent in the United States than in nearly all other developed Western nations" (p. 43). Although it appears that Americans like to be married, almost half of all marriages in the United States end in divorce (Pieper Webb et al., 2010).
