Corrosion of carbon steel is a major problem that destroys assists of industries and world steel ... more Corrosion of carbon steel is a major problem that destroys assists of industries and world steel installations; the importance of this work is to introduce new heterocyclic compounds as effective and low-cost corrosion inhibitors. Three compounds of carbohydrazide derivatives, namely: 5-amino-N 0-((2methoxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)isoxazole-4-carbohydrazide (H4), 2,4-diamino-N 0-((2-methoxynaphthalene-1-yl)methylene) pyrimidine-5-carbohydrazide (H5) and N 0-((2-methoxynaphthalen-1-yl) methylene)-7,7-dimethyl-2,5-dioxo-4a,5,6,7,8,8a-hexahydro-2H-chromene-3-carbohydrazide (H6) were used to examine the efficacy of corrosion of carbon steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution. This corrosion efficacy was detected by utilizing various methods including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), weight loss measurements (WL), surface morphology analyses by atomic force microscopy (AFM), quantum chemical computations based on density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The results indicated that these compounds act as mixed type inhibitors i.e. reduce the corrosion rate of carbon steel due to the formation of a stable protective film on the metal surface and reduce the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction. As confirmed from impedance, carbohydrazide derivatives molecules are adsorbed physically on metal surface with higher corrosion efficacy reached to (81.5-95.2%) at 20 Â 10 À6 M concentration at room temperature. Temkin isotherm model is the most acceptable one to describe the carbohydrazide derivative molecules adsorption on the surface of carbon steel. Protection mechanism was supported by quantum chemical analyses and Monte Carlo modeling techniques. The theoretical calculations support the experimental results obtained. This proves the use of carbohydrazide derivatives as a very effective inhibitors against the corrosion of carbon steel in acidic media.

Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were calculated and discussed. Polarization tests showed that this drug is of mixed type. Corrosion protection properties of the drug have been inferred from FT-IR spectra and by atomic force microscope (AFM).

Research paper thumbnail of Analysis of domperidone in pharmaceutical formulations and wastewater by differential pulse voltammetry at a glassy-carbon electrode

Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, 2007

The redox characteristics of the drug domperidone at a glassy-carbon electrode (GCE) in aqueous m... more The redox characteristics of the drug domperidone at a glassy-carbon electrode (GCE) in aqueous media were critically investigated by differential-pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). In Britton-Robinson (BR) buffer of pH 2.6-10.3, an irreversible and diffusion-controlled oxidation wave was developed. The dependence of the CV response of the developed anodic peak on the sweep rate (ν) and on depolizer concentration was typical of an electrode-coupled chemical reaction mechanism (EC) in which an irreversible first-order reaction is interposed between the charges. The values of the electron-transfer coefficient (α) involved in the ratedetermining step calculated from the linear plots of E p,a against ln (ν) in the pH range investigated were in the range 0.64±0.05 confirming the irreversible nature of the oxidation peak. In BR buffer of pH 7.6-8.4, a well defined oxidation wave was developed and the plot of peak current height of the DPV against domperidone concentration at this peak potential was linear in the range 5.20×10 −6 to 2.40×10 −5 mol L −1 with lower limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) of 6.1×10 −7 and 9.1×10 −7 mol L −1 , respectively. A relative standard deviation of 2.39% (n=5) was obtained for 8.5×10 −6 mol L −1 of the drug. These DPV procedures were successfully used for analysis of domperidone in the pure form (98.2±3.1%), dosage form (98.35± 2.9%), and in tap (97.0±3.6%) and wastewater (95.0± 2.9%) samples. The method was validated by comparison with standard titrimetric and HPLC methods. Acceptable error of less than 3.3 % was also achieved.

The results of the inhibition efficiency (IE %) increase with increasing the concentration of inhibitor but decreases with raising the temperature. The adsorption of Egy-dronate on the Csteel surface obeys with Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption process is spontaneous, endothermic and physical adsorption. The polarization curves show that Egy-dronate is a mixedtype inhibitor tends to anodically more. The results obtained from chemical and electrochemical techniques are a good agreement quality and gives the same behavior of the adsorption of Egydronate drug. All techniques have proved the thin film formation adsorbed on the metal surface as a protective coated to prevent the dissolution metal in the corrosive medium, due to electrostatic attraction between unshared electrons of inhibitor molecules and the positive sites on the metal surface.
