There has been a paucity of studies from the region. The aims of this study were to define the demographic, anthropometric, metabolic and histological characteristics of patients with NAFLD in our local population and to determine independent predictors of severe liver fibrosis. Patients with persistently raised liver enzymes and/or fatty liver detected on ultrasonography with exclusion of other liver disorders were prospectively recruited. Their insulin resistance was assessed using the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance score. A liver biopsy was performed in all cases for grading (for steatohepatitis) and staging (for fibrosis) of NAFLD. Independent risk factors for fibrosis were determined using multiple logistic regression analysis. Seventy-five patients were recruited: 39 men (52%) and 36 women (48%). The mean age of the patients was 47.0+/-12.2 years. Of these, 58 patients (77.3%) were centrally obese, 29 patients (38.7%) were diabetic and 15 patients (20.0%) had impaired glucose tolerance. Insulin resistance was diagnosed in 62 out of 64 (96.9%) patients. Benign steatosis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and cirrhosis were diagnosed in three (4.3%), 59 (84.3%) and eight (11.4%) of 70 patients, respectively. Significant independent predictors of liver fibrosis were; male sex (P=0.019, OR=5.55, CI=1.33-23.18) and Indian race (P=0.013, OR=8.21, CI=1.56-43.16). The full histological spectrum of NAFLD was seen in our patients. The majority of patients were insulin resistant, centrally obese and either diabetic or had impaired glucose tolerance. The predictors of severe liver fibrosis were male sex and Indian race.

American Journal of Hypertension, 2007

Alterations in microvascular and conduit artery function contribute to target organ damage in hyp... more Alterations in microvascular and conduit artery function contribute to target organ damage in hypertension. We investigated the association of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors with microvascular and conduit artery function in hypertensive subjects.Participants included 504 hypertensives (aged 62.1 ± 9.8 years, 42% men) from the community, without history of symptomatic CV disease. Brachial artery ultrasound was performed to measure forearm blood flow (FBF) at rest and during reactive hyperemia (markers of microvascular function) and flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery (a marker of conduit artery endothelial function). The association of conventional and novel (homocysteine, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and lipoprotein a CV risk factors with microvascular function and FMD was tested in multivariable regression models.Variables independently associated with higher resting FBF were male sex, higher body mass index (BMI), smoking, and lower HDL-cholesterol; variables associated with lower hyperemic FBF included greater age, female sex, and diabetes. Higher plasma homocysteine was associated with lower hyperemic FBF in obese subjects (P for log homocysteine × BMI interaction = .0008). Variables independently associated with lower FMD were greater age, sex gender, history of smoking, and not using statins. Higher homocysteine was associated with lower FMD in subjects with higher systolic blood pressure (P for interaction = .0004). Hyperemic flow velocity was independently associated with FMD (P = .0006), but its inclusion as a covariate did not influence the association of CV risk factors with FMD.In asymptomatic subjects with essential hypertension, select CV risk factors were associated with microvascular and conduit artery function. Furthermore, the association of CV risk factors with conduit artery function appeared to be independent of downstream microvascular function.

Research paper thumbnail of A study of the process time effect to photosensitive polyimides

Polyimides are used extensively in the semiconductor industry as passivation layers, interlayers ... more Polyimides are used extensively in the semiconductor industry as passivation layers, interlayers and dielectrics because of their excellent properties. These properties include thermal stability, superior chemical resistance, high mechanical strength and low dielectric constant. Most polyimide used in the semiconductor industry is the negative-type photosensitive polyimide due to its direct patternability. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of process time delay during the polyamic ester formation to the final imidized polyimide. Post Coat Delay (PCD) is the delay time after coating before undergoing exposing while Post Expose Delay (PED) is the delay time after exposing before undergoing development. Samples of imide coated on bare wafers with after cure thickness of 6 Em are used. The image from Microscope inspection shows that the sample that is processed immediately is different from those other samples. The results of the after cure thickness of polyimides show that all the samples are within specification limit. Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) is used to check for the chemical bonding. All the samples are fully imidized without peaks indicating the existence of PAE precursor. The imidization rate is lower as the delay time increase for both PCD and PED. Further investigation need to be done to verified the results.
