Research paper thumbnail of Determination of load capacity of a non-gasketed flange joint under combined internal pressure, axial and bending loading for safe strength and sealing

Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering, 2014

Performance of a bolted flange joint is characterized mainly due to its 'strength' and 'sealing c... more Performance of a bolted flange joint is characterized mainly due to its 'strength' and 'sealing capability'. A number of analytical and experimental studies have been conducted to study these characteristics only under internal pressure loading. A very limited work is found in literature under combined internal pressure and bending loading. Due to the ignorance of external loads i.e. bending and axial in addition to the internal pressure loading, an optimized performance of the bolted flange joint can not be achieved. The present design codes do not address the effects of combined loading on the structural integrity and sealing ability. To investigate joint strength and sealing capability under combined loading, an extensive comparative experimental and numerical study of a non-gasketed flange joint with two different taper angles on the flange surface and with different load combinations is carried out and overall joint performance and behavior is discussed. Actual joint load capacity is determined under both the design and proof test pressures with maximum additional external loading (axial and bending) that can be applied for safe joint performance.

Some also may be of the view that it will improve communication and as such impact productivity positively. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the employee's mobile phone dependency and its impact on their performance among the employees of four major industries of Pakistan. A field survey carried out with the help of a structured questionnaire. Data was collected from 200 employees conveniently drawn from four major industries of Pakistan. The collected data then analyzed using SPSS 17. Appropriate percentages and frequencies were computed to assist in analyzing the data. The survey results show that most of the employees from services sector were agreed that the use of cell phone has improved their working efficiency and that the cell phone is necessary for better performance of work and that they do not think their colleagues use cell phone inappropriately in workplace its mean people are responsible enough to handle the use of cell phone. Whereas the employees belongs to manufacturing sector are in point in view that using mobile phones during work is harmful and put impact on their productivity negatively. This study has practical significance for service and manufacturing companies during making policies about mobile phone usage and for understanding the behavioral intentions of their employees and using them for better performance.

Out of 44 Union councils (UCs), 06 UCs have been selected randomly for this study. Out of each UC two villages are selected and from each village 25 women above 18 years have been selected randomly. The collected data then analyzed using multiple regressions. Variables women age, family type, family size, husband health status, purdah observed, source of income and number of children are found statistically significant. The results can be concluded that economic constraints due to number of factors forced the women in the study area to work outside home. However, due to religious nature of the area, mostly women are not allowed to participate in economic activities outside their homes.

The framework includes a green rating system for bridges. The green rating system is divided into three sections, which are design, construction and maintenance. The three sections are further divided into various criteria. For each criterion the description, intent, and requirements have been established. The requirements were established after reviewing various industry standards. The Delphi survey was conducted at Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) divisions to assign point values to sections and the criteria. The results of the Delphi survey and scorecard of the rating system are shown in the relevant appendix and/or sections. The certification levels for the rating system are established to categorize sustainable bridges. A bridge can be categorized as Non-Green, Certified, Green, Total Green, and Evergreen, depending on the total score obtained by the project. Life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) guidelines are also developed to support the sustainability of bridge projects. LCA guidelines include the steps to calculate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a bridge project. An inventory of construction materials and equipment that can be used in bridge projects was created, including their emission factors as found in literature, historical databases, or by using computer tools. Certain products emit less GHG compared to conventional products. Recycled materials such as fly ash, blast furnace slag cement, high performance concrete, and steel produce much less emissions than traditional materials. Sustainable products are listed along with their emission factors and can be used to calculate GHG emissions. LCCA guidelines include steps to calculate the life cycle cost of bridges.

Micro finance plays role in improving self-employment through business or productive activities. In this study an attempt is made to explore the determinants of self-employment in which micro finance is key determinant. This study used bivariate regression analysis based on primary data of Bahawalpur City and to check the relationship of different socio economic determinants on self-employment. Self-employment is measured by binary number as 01 coding of dummy dependent. As taking loan or not taking loan. Similarly all explanatory variables measured by binary coding shape of 01.The results show that self-employment at remarkably influenced by age, education, sex, family wealth, marital status, technical skill, micro finance and loan purpose. More over at the end it is concluded that microfinance is major independent variable in this research and it has positively and highly significant impact on self-employment,i.e. 200% or 2 times may can increase self-employment if provides loan at easy grounds.
