The Analysis has been done by applying four technical indicators and three economic indicators on a real farm of palm trees. The investigation took into account the varied water demand for palm trees over the years, meteorological data of the region, the characteristics of the borehole, and the local market prices of PV system components. The investigation has been done using two options of PV systems: grid-connected system and standalone system. The results showed the superiority of the grid-connected system in spite of the unfair price of energy exchange with the utility grid. The results achieved are the Levelled cost of energy, which is in the range from 0.013 to 0.019 /kWh.Thestandardizedcostofproducedwaterisintherangefrom0.011to0.013/kWh. Research paper thumbnail of Sizing of PV Array for Water Pumping Application

Utilization of solar energy in water pumping is one of the most economically viable photovoltaic ... more Utilization of solar energy in water pumping is one of the most economically viable photovoltaic (PV) applications especially in remote areas. The accurate sizing of PV array is essential, as under sizing will make the pumping system unable to satisfy the water demand. On the other hand, over sizing of PV array leads to extra cost. This paper presents a novel approach for sizing the PV array of water pumping systems. This approach depends on the solar irradiance data of the shortest sunny day over the year to increase the reliability of pumping system. This approach depends on determining the proper starting value of the solar irradiance on the global solar radiation curve for tilted or moving surfaces. A design algorithm has been proposed for applying this approach including the converting process of solar radiation values from horizontal surface to tilted surface. A case study from Buraydah city in the middle of Saudi Arabia has been selected for applying the sizing approach.

Electrical energy consumption in residential buildings increases rapidly in Saudi Arabia. Nearly ... more Electrical energy consumption in residential buildings increases rapidly in Saudi Arabia. Nearly 11% of residential energy consumed is due to the use of electricity for water heating. The purpose of this work is to investigate the performance of using the evacuated tube solar water heating system in residential buildings. Six locations in different climatic regions over Saudi Arabia have been selected for the investigation using measured data of weather and solar radiation. The technical performance and the economic feasibility of using solar water heating system in the selected sites have been investigated using RET Screen program through determining the delivered heat, solar fraction, the reduction in CO2 emissions, the savings in energy and cost, payback time, net present value and the benefit to cost ratio. The study with current conditions showed that there is a promising feasibility of using evacuated tube solar water heating system with heat pipe in Saudi Arabia, especially r...

The investigation has been done for three possible of sun tracking modes: fixed tilt angle, 1-axis and 2-axis tracking modes. The performance characteristics have been determined using three indicators: yield factor, capacity factor and performance ratio. The simulation results showed high energy productivity for all the 32 sites over Saudi Arabia. The values of performance indicators are high compared with similar systems in different countries. The main purpose of this study is to explore the relative properties for some sites in Saudi Arabia regarding solar energy production.

Research paper thumbnail of Electronic Control of Single-phase Induction Motors Using AC Chopper

Journal of Engineering and Computer Sciences, Oct 31, 2011

This paper suggests a versatile electronic method for efficient start, speed-control, ... more This paper suggests a versatile electronic method for efficient start, speed-control, direction-reversal, and plugging braking of single-phase induction motors. This is achieved by feeding the two-stator windings of a split-single-phase induction motor via two forced-commutated solid-state converters. AC chopping technique with possible edges control is applied. Thereby, high starting torques and low starting currents are realized. Reversing the direction of rotation and plugging braking are achieved by interchanging the sequence of voltages applied on the stator windings. Also, speed control is achieved at high motor efficiency as AC chopping results in less harmonic contents. The paper computes dynamic and steady-state performance characteristics of the motor using the suggested method. Then it compares them with other methods. For this purpose, a state space mathematical model considering the discontinuities introduced by the electronic switches is developed to describe the system. The configuration was subjected to high levels of natural convection and low rates of nanofluid flow. The nanofluid thermophysical properties were characterized using the available correlations in the literatures except the viscosity which was measured and correlated in terms of the nanoparticles loading ratios. Comparative analysis indicated that the application of nanofluid could not guarantee heat transfer enhancement in configurations dominated by natural convection. Exception heat transfer enhancement was only found when very low nanoparticles loading ratio was applied. Instead, heat transfer degradation was found especially in the cases of highest nanoparticles loading ratios. Alternatively, heat transfer enhancement was observed when the forced convection effect was substantial at the high...
