Aims of the study This study aimed to evaluate the changes in serum levels of parathyroid hormone and calcitonin in pregnant and non-pregnant women in Babylon Governorate, Iraq. Materials and methods This study designs as a case-control study performed on pregnant women who attended Women's and Children's Hospital in Hilla and Shomali General Hospital in Babylon Governorate. Forty pregnant women with a range age (18-40 years) and 50 healthy subjects with non-pregnant women with range age (18-40 years) visited the hospital for routine checkups without any history of chronic diseases, acute illness and infection. The biochemical parameters were determined by the sandwich ELISA technique. Results The results show a significant increase in levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin (CAL) in pregnant as compared with the non-pregnant group (277.7 ± 47.87 ng/mL),(72.58 ± 12.76 ng/mL) and (21.89 ± 4.412 ng/mL), (9.65 ± 1.921 ng/mL) respectively. The significant difference (p-value < 0.0001). Conclusion In conclusion, the present study finds that pregnant women experience significant hormonal changes in PTH and CT, which indicates the necessity of diagnosing these changes and treating them for the success of this pregnancy.

Androgens play critical roles in prostate carcinogenesis as well as prostate cancer progression. ... more Androgens play critical roles in prostate carcinogenesis as well as prostate cancer progression. Androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT), which reduces testosterone production and inhibits androgen action in prostate cancer cells, has been the criterion standard therapy for metastatic prostate cancer (1). Although initially most prostate cancers respond well to ADT, most patients eventually progress to castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), which is mainly thought to be because androgen receptor reactivation is induced by several mechanisms. One of those mechanisms have been identified to be intratumoral androgen synthesis mostly from adrenal precursor steroids and at least in part due to de novo synthesis from cholesterol which is supported by increased expression of several genes encoding steroidogenic enzymes including HSD3B, HSD17B, and SRD5A in CRPC. Among them, HSD3B1 gene encodes 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-1, which is mainly expressed in peripheral tissues including the...

The risk of developing RA has been associated with human leukocyte antigen HLA-DRB1 alleles: HLA-DRB1*04, HLA-DRB1*01, and HLA-DRB1*010 in deferent ethnocentrism. These HLA-DRB1 alleles contain a stretch of conserved five amino acid sequence, the shared epitope (SE), in the third hypervariable region of their DRB1 chain, which has been associated with the risk of developing Aim of the study: to study the possible association of HLA-DRB1 gene polymorphism of Arabic ethnocentrism PA patients in Babylon Province, Iraq. Patients and methods: The present case control study was conducted on sixty one patients (18 males and 43 females) of Arabic ethnocentrism RA patients admitted to Rheumatoid Unit in Merjan Teaching Medical City, Babylon Province, Iraq, as well as 127 apparently healthy control subjects (41 males, 86 females) as control group. Zinc also plays a central role in sperm metabolism. The current study was designed to investigate the role of zinc supplementation on qualitative and quantitative properties of seminal fluid, in parallel with the UA level and urate pathway enzymes in the semen of patients with asthenozoospermia. Materials and Methods The study was designed as a randomized controlled trial of 60 asthenozoospermic subfertile men. The current study, which was conducted during one year, involved 60 fertile and 60 asthenozoospermic subfertile men belonging to Hilla City, Iraq. Semen samples were obtained from the participants before and after treatment with zinc supplements. The levels of UA, xanthine oxidase (XO), adenosine deaminase (ADA) and 5'-nucleotidase (5'-NU) activities were determined in spermatozoa and seminal plasma of both groups. Results UA levels (P=0.034) and 5'-...

As a result, laboratory testing has become an essential part of the evaluation and monitoring process in diabetes management. Further tests are required to establish the correlation between hyperglycemia and other disease parameter. Therefore, the correlation between cardiovascular disease risk factor values and uric acid levels in sera of adult patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (without renal diseases) and healthy controls have been studied. Total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and uric acid in sera of 52 patients (36 males and 16 females) with poor hyperglycemic control type 1 diabetes mellitus and 30 healthy controls (19 males and 11 females) were determined. Results of present study show significantly higher risk factor values (P < 0.001), which means increasing in the probability of atherosclerosis incidence. Also hyperglycemia found to be associated with hyperuricemia in type 1 diabetic patients.

Recently, new studies have focused on increased oxidative stress (OS) in T cell-mediated skin diseases like psoriasis, contact dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. However, there is no study investigating the status of OS in SD. In this study, we aimed to determine the status of OS in SD and the correlation of disease severity with OS. Fifty-four patients who were clinically and/or histopathologically diagnosed with SD were included in the study. Fifty-four healthy volunteers constituted the control group. Disease severity in patients with SD was scored according to the Seborrheic Dermatitis Area and Severity Index (SDASI). Serum total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidative status (TOS) were measured, and the oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated in all patients and control subjects. The mean TAS values were significantly lower in the patient group than in the control group (p = 0.024). However, patients had significantly higher TOS and OSI values than the controls (p \ 0.05). There was no correlation between SDASI and TAS, TOS, and OSI values. In this study, the association of oxidative stress and disease activity has first investigated in seborrheic dermatitis. It was found that OS was significantly higher in SD patients than in healthy subjects. In conclusion, our findings point to the possible role of the OS for the etiopathogenesis of SD.

Objective: The present study aims to investigate the possible association between tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) levels and (-308 G/A) TNF-α promoter polymorphism in patients with RA in Babylon Province. Patients and Methods: This study was designed as a case control. Forty-five (10 males, 35 females) patients with RA and forty-five (9 males, 36 females) apparently healthy persons as control with the compatible age and sex were enrolled in this study. Serum level of TNF-α and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (ACCPA) were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Disease activity of RA patients was assessed u...
