Research paper thumbnail of Compressive Behavior of Normal Strength Concrete Column Strengthened With Reinforced Ultra-High-Performance Concrete

Proceedings of the World Congress on Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering, Apr 1, 2024

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and normal strength concrete (NSC) are concrete materials ... more Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and normal strength concrete (NSC) are concrete materials with high compatibility characteristics. This paper presents the experimental and numerical study on the uniaxial compression behavior of NSC columns strengthened using UHPC. The main idea of the proposed strengthening technique is to optimize the UHPC and enhance the ultimate capacity, impermeability, and crack resistance of the damaged column. Fourteen (14) NSC columns strengthened with UHPC were tested. The influence of longitudinal groove geometry and volumetric ratio of shear reinforcement on the failure mode, ultimate capacity, displacement, initial stiffness, ductility index, and ultimate strain of the composite column was investigated. Increasing the groove size will increase the axial resistance and improve the ductility of the strengthened NSC column. Decreasing the shear reinforcement ratio does not affect the axial strength of the column. The developed FEM can accurately simulate the behavior of the column strengthened with UHPC using the proposed technique.

A total of 38 specimens were prepared and tested under axial compression. In addition to FRP confined UHPFRC, FRP confined ultra-high performance concrete without fiber addition (UHPC), high strength concrete (HSC), and normal strength concrete (NSC) were also tested to investigate their comparative performances. The test results indicate that the FRP confined UHPFRC can exhibit ductile behavior if sufficient FRP confinement is provided. However, due to their ultra-high strength as well as the unique microstructure, FRP confined UHPFRC is likely to exhibit more brittle behavior than FRP confined NSC and HSC. Compared to FRP confined NSC and HSC, the confinement efficiency is less for FRP confined UHPFRC. Sudden stress reduction or stress fluctuations are observed shortly after the initial peak stress (axial stress at the first peak point) for FRP confined UHPFRC. Based on the confinement level, the stress-strain behavior of FRP confined UHPFRC may experience a second ascending branch or a continuous descending branch after the sudden stress reduction or stress fluctuations. The influences of FRP layers, FRP types, and fiber addition on the compressive behavior of FRP confined UHPFRC are observed to be significant. Moreover, existing stress-strain models available for FRP confined UHPFRC are evaluated by using a database collected in this study.

The UHPC as a repair material on normal strength concrete (NSC) depends on the quality of the bond strength at the interface. The interface behavior of UHPC-NSC concrete has a significant impact on its overall durability performance. This paper reviews the studies conducted on the bond strength at the concrete interface to determine the effectiveness of different bond strength testing techniques. The review has shown that the bond strength is commonly evaluated through splitting tensile, slant shear, direct shear, pull-off, bi-surface shear, and third-point flexural tests. Slant shear and splitting tensile test methods are the most common techniques used to evaluate the performance of bond strength between UHPC and NSC. splitting tensile tests, stre...

Pedestrian crossing facilities such as crosswalk, pedestrian foot bridges overpass and underpass ... more Pedestrian crossing facilities such as crosswalk, pedestrian foot bridges overpass and underpass at intersection or midblock with crossing facilities are designed to separate pedestrians from the moving vehicles hence improving safety of the pedestrians. Questionnaire survey was used to determine the factors influencing use and utilization of foot bridge by pedestrians in Kano city, Nigeria. The survey results show that 70% of the respondents were frequent users of the bridge while 30% were found not be using it. Analysis of the survey result shows that age and gender were statistically significant in the utilisation of the bridge with p-value of 0.041 and 0.002 respectively while education level was found to be statistically insignificant p-value = 0.688. The major reasons influencing pedestrian to use the bridge were safety (66%), barricades (25%), then traffic flow (9%). For the pedestrians that does not use the bridge, they describe the bridge height (38.5%) as the major reason ...

Design and cost estimation of water tanks is a time consuming task, which requires a great deal of expertise. All tanks are designed as crack free structure to eliminate any leakage. This project therefore studies the efficiency of rectangular or circular tanks, 40,000 liters capacities were used in order to draw reasonable inferences on tanks shape design effectiveness, relative cost implications of tank types and structural capacities. The basic tanks construction materials include steel reinforcement, concrete and formwork obtained from the prepared structural drawings. Result of the materials takeoff revealed that circular tank consumed lesser individual materials as compared to rectangular one. This will give circular shaped tanks more favored selection over the rectangular shaped tank, although some other factors must still be assessed.
