Research paper thumbnail of The Link between Energy Consumption and Economic Growth: Empirical Evidence for Black Sea Countries

British Journal of Economics, Management & Trade, 2016

The purpose of this research article is to provide the fresh evidence on the link between energy ... more The purpose of this research article is to provide the fresh evidence on the link between energy consumption (ENE) and economic growth (GDP) while controlling for the impact of CO 2 emissions (CO) in the case of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. To conduct the empirical study we have employed the panel VAR methodology in the period 1980-2014. The results suggest that economic growth increases the ENE. However, the negative link between CO 2 emissions and economic growth is reported, implying the great awareness of the GCC countries on the environmental problems connected with the fossil fuels based energy. Thus, there is a serious incentive in these countries to deal with the potential environmental issues. One of the good alternatives is renewable energy. In addition, the increase in the energy efficiency is considered to be an important task in the future.

Primary data were used whereby questionnaires were distributed to some operators of SME in Nigeria and specifically around the Maraba-Nyanya metropolis. Literature materials were also adopted. However in the course of the study it was found that “small and medium Enterprise drives their country’s development as they create employment and contribute to the gross domestic product”. Therefore in order to improve the performance of SMEs in Nigeria it was recommended that amongst other things there should be capacity developments for both technical and management are a vital area, governments should develop and implement coherent policies that will enable SSEs compete, there should be adequate incentives to banks and other financial institutions that fund SSI.

Journal of African Studies and Development

This study investigates the potential for internationalisation of the naira in the quest for a co... more This study investigates the potential for internationalisation of the naira in the quest for a common West African currency, despite some weak institutional challenges attributed to Nigeria. We employed a two-stage currency internationalisation modelling approach, where the first stage estimates the model, and the second stage employs 'counterfactual simulations' to predict the trend in the currency ratio of the proposed currency for internationalisation (in this case, the naira). We also account for the 'tipping effect' and 'network externalities', as recommended in the literature. The results provide evidence that supports the 'tipping effect' and 'network externalities', which show that accounting for 'network externalities' may cause inconsistency in the results. Our simulation exercise shows that improvements in the financial and macroeconomic development levels are prerequisites for the internalisation of the naira in West Africa. The results of the policy simulation also show that the reserve ratio of the naira is consistently higher than that of the CFA franc, which indicates that the naira is a better reserve currency anchor for the proposed single currency in West Africa, compared with the CFA franc. This is also reinforced by evidence that the naira in its worst performing period is better than the CFA franc in its best performing period.

Research paper thumbnail of Influence of digital economy on youth unemployment in West Africa

Transnational Corporations Review, 2020

The world has progressively become a global village and most economic activities in today's world... more The world has progressively become a global village and most economic activities in today's world embrace digitisation. Digitisation is gradually being appreciated in West Africa but its impact on youth unemployment is relatively unknown. Thus, this study aims at filling this research gap by measuring digitisation in two perspectives; internet penetration rate and mobile telephone subscription. The Im-Pesaran-Shin (IPS) unit-root test affirms that the data are suitable for panel ARDL estimation technique. The estimation establishes that youth unemployment, digitisation and the control variables are cointegrated. This study also reveals that digitisation could reduce youth unemployment in West Africa, both at the short-and long-run but not convincing due to low appreciation of digital technologies. In the short-run, the result is consistent in some countries but not same and robust in some others. Thus, the paper concludes that increasing digitisation would enhance employment opportunities for the youths in the West African region.

Yet, empirical evidence on it in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is scarce. The current study is the first attempt at providing empirical evidence on the existence of the flypaper effect in the two largest economies in SSA. Employing the two-step system GMM estimator, our findings suggest that the provincial governments in South Africa are more responsive to positive changes in unconditional federal transfers than the state authorities in Nigeria, in terms of providing a higher volume of public goods and services. It is, thus, our submission that public sensitization on the amounts of unconditional federal transfers received by the state governments and their disbursements needs to be adequately enhanced in order to reduce the illusion level or information asymmetry surrounding the use of unconditional federal transfers if the public at the state ...

Research paper thumbnail of Towards mitigating ecological degradation in G-7 countries: accounting for economic effect dynamics, renewable energy consumption, and innovation

Heliyon, 2021

The 21 st century economic growth is characterized by extensive production and consumption, which... more The 21 st century economic growth is characterized by extensive production and consumption, which increases anthropogenic emissions. However, reducing emission levels require ecological sustainability through innovation and modern technological consideration. This paper investigated not only renewable energy-driven environmental quality but also captured innovation research investment in renewables within the framework of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) model for G-7 countries. The findings confirmed the presence of EKC hypothesis for G-7 countries. In addition, renewable energy and innovation were identified to exert negative effects on ecological footprint. To capture the entire conditional distribution of the ecological footprint, we applied the Method of Moments Quantile Regression with fixed-effects. The results affirmed the negative effects of renewable energy innovation. Besides, their effects were heterogeneous across the quantiles with evidence of diminishing effects from lower to higher quantiles, suggesting that countries with lower levels of ecological footprint are possibly more prone to the environmental deterioration effect of income growth. The results of the causality test support economic growth-induced ecological degradation, growth-induced renewables, and innovation-induced ecological conservation. The results further showed a feedback effect between renewables and ecological footprint, innovation, and income growth as well as innovation and renewables. These findings portend important implications for the realization of carbon-free economies in G-7 countries by 2100.

What drives this research is that diversifying the economy is paramount to achieving sustainable economic growth, which Nigeria needs most. Thus, this paper assesses the impact of non-oil trade on Nigerian economic growth with an emphasis on export, import and aggregate trade. ARDL estimation technique was adopted for the analysis and result reveal that non-oil export is paramount to economic growth in the short-run while export, import and aggregate trade are revealed to have a significant positive influence in the long-run. This highlights the importance of non-oil sector trade (especially exports) on the economic growth of Nigeria. Policies are therefore encouraging to boost the non-oil sector export in Nigeria of which export promotion should be encouraged.

Autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL) was employed for the long run and short run dynamic relationship between each of the policy variables; Money supply, Interest rate and Exchange rate, and the target variable; Gross domestic product. The estimated long run model shows that log of money supply has a positive impact on the log of GDP, Exchange rate in its current period is inversely related to the target variable, while its one period lag positively impacts the target variable. Also, the Interest rate in its current value exerts a positive and significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria. Similarly, in the short run, one period lag of the target positively impacts its current value, while the Exchange rate in its current and one period lag, significantly, exerts a negative and positive impact on economic growth respectively. Based on the findings the study recommends the introduction of currency redenomination to facilitate the consumers' cash payment and reduce the cost incurred by producers and issuing authorities, and also make payment system more efficient and effective.

Research paper thumbnail of The influence of renewable energy use, human capital, and trade on environmental quality in South Africa: multiple structural breaks cointegration approach

Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2020

Recent economic and environmental literature suggests that the current state of eneby the British... more Recent economic and environmental literature suggests that the current state of eneby the British Petroleum Statisticalrgy use in South Africa amidst rapid growing population is unsustainable. Researchers in this area mostly focus on the effect of fossil energy use on carbon (CO 2) emission, which represents only an aspect of environmental quality. In contrast, the current study evaluates the influence of renewable energy use, human capital, and trade on ecological footprint-a more comprehensive measure of environmental quality. To this end, the study employs multiple structural breaks cointegration tests (Maki cointegration tests), dynamic unrestricted error correction model through Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, and VECM Granger causality tests. The results of the Maki cointegration tests reveal the existence of a cointegration between the variables in all the models with evidence of multiple structural breaks. Further, the ARDL results divulge that an increase in renewable energy use, human capital, and trade improves environmental quality through a decrease in ecological footprint, while an increase in income stimulates ecological footprint. Moreover, causal relationship is found, running from all the variables to renewable energy and trade flow in the long run, while in the short run, economic growth causes ecological footprint. Trade is found to Grangercause human capital, while human capital causes renewable energy. Additionally, human capital, renewable energy, and economic growth are predictors of trade. The study therefore recommends South African policymakers to consider the importance of renewable energy, human capital development, and trade as a policy option to reduce ecological footprint and improve environmental quality.

Data on foreign aid measured by Total Official Development Assistance received (constant 2010 US$), infrastructural development (proxy by total electricity net generation. Electric power and distribution losses as a ratio of output, mobile cellular subscriptions, Internet subscribers per 100 population, improved sanitation facilities as a ratio of population with access. Improved water facilities as a rati...

From the analysis, our findings indicate that the initial level of economic growth is not prone to poverty reduction, while an increase in economic growth is prone to poverty reduction, a situation that can only be sustained and improved upon if certain policy measures are put in place Poverty is what affects the majority of a population. More than 70% of Nigerians lack the usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions needed to live a happy life. This unfortunate category of Nigerians lack material comfort and in plain language they live from hand to mouth. Poverty in Nigeria is extreme. It covers a wide range: from absence of basic amenities like food, shelter, water, hospitals and electricity, good roads and good schools to absence of security and access to productive resources including education, working skill and tools, political and civil rights to participate...

Applying the Chi-square test, the study reveals that high currency redenomination removes wasteful transactions removes user costs (difficulties arising from memorizing, calculating and carrying large sum of lowest denominations: coins and smaller notes). The results also show that currency redenomination influences inflationary pressure and currency liberalization in Nigeria. Based on the findings the study recommends the introduction of currency redenomination to facilitate the consumers' cash payment and reduce the cost incurred by producers and issuing authorities, and also make payment system more efficient and effective.
