At any given time, a union or some unions will embark on industrial actions ranging from lockout, work-to-rule, picketing, protest to strikes. Since 2011, a year hardly passed without the Academic Staff Union of Universities () being on strike. Scholars have found and argued that these strike actions have different debilitating consequences. This study examined the impact of ASUU's strike actions on the socioeconomic milieu of Anyigba community of Kogi State. The main objective of the study was to ascertain the educational, religious, security, peace and commercial impact of ASUU's strikes, five research questions were drawn: What are the consequences of ASUU's strike actions on religion and morality? In which ways do the strikes pose threat to security? In which ways do the strikes retard the economy of the host community? How do the strikes affect educational advancement? How do the strikes disrupt town and gown relations? The paper was anchored on system theory. Applying survey method of research, a set of questionnaire was administered on 200 respondents. Twenty other members of Anyigba town were also interviewed. Method of data analysis was descriptive statistics presented in themes using Google analyzed participants' responses into piecharts, histograms and Bar-charts. Findings show that ASUU's strike actions negatively impacted on morality, threatened security and retarded the economy. Based on the findings, the paper recommends government's implementation of agreements, adequate funding and entrenchment of university autonomy.

Ogun State, Nigeria is experiencing crises, including kidnapping and terrorism that can impact it... more Ogun State, Nigeria is experiencing crises, including kidnapping and terrorism that can impact its destinations. Thus, this study examined the perceptions of 133 tourists on the influence of these crises on their visitation to an attraction in the state, using a questionnaire survey. Two attraction officials were also interviewed on whether such crises impact revenue generation and employment. Results from the questionnaires which were analyzed using PSPP frequency distribution show that although terror crises had no significant influence on tourists' visitation to the attraction, they were concerned with the level of insecurity at the destination. Also, the transcribed interview outcomes reveal that, although similar crises had no significant impact on tourism, its perceptions can affect revenue generation and employment, when destinations are poorly projected. Consequently, these findings suggest the need for improved safety measures and mechanisms for promoting safe places at the destination by the authorities, for improved tourist arrivals, revenue, and employment opportunities.
The global growth of urban slums has been attracting interrogations in economic research as well ... more The global growth of urban slums has been attracting interrogations in economic research as well as problems for policymakers. This study investigates the urban slum lifestyle of the people living in slums in selected areas of the three (3) senatorial districts of Lagos State, Nigeria. The research employs participant observation where the researchers are present within the focused areas to study the pattern of poverty, then applies structured questionnaire and interview. It further employs a random sampling of 120 individuals from each of the three (3) senatorial districts, giving a total number of samples from the population as 360 samples. The study employs Descriptive statistics, weighted poverty measures and Linear regression models as Tools for the analyses. It finds that the microeconomic environment has an impact on slum incidence in the urban areas. There is evidence that the higher the proportion of income spent on water, the greater the incidence of slums. This finding is in line with theory, following microeconomic theory that poorer households will spend more on necessities like water and such households are naturally more common in slums areas. Again, the results show that there is no link between urban development policy and proliferation of slums. In addition, the findings support evidence of different patterns of urban proliferation in the three regions examined. It further finds that urban settlers pose danger to the society and face danger in terms of unavailability and extreme difficulty to install infrastructural facilities. The study, therefore, recommends among others, a strategic urban development policy to address proliferation of urban slums. It also recommends that the slums should not be demolished since their demolition may be calamitous. Instead, peculiarity of the tribes living in the creek should be considered and amenities should be provided. Thus, microeconomic environments could be enhanced and danger they pose or face will be significantly reduced.

The paper is anchored on Moore's theory of distance education. It employs qualitative survey research and findings show that majority of respondents believe that NOUN can fast-track access to education for PWDs. Also, the majority of respondents are of the opinion that one of the fastest means of removing the stigma against PWDs is their inclusiveness and integration through their unfettered access to Open and Distance Learning (ODL). However, the majority of the respondents are of the belief that PWDs may face challenges in accessing ODL due to endemic poverty and cultural distortions. The paper, therefore, concludes with recommendations for advocacy on the importance of ODL for the education of the PWDs as well as for the government to provide enabling environment to support ODL education in Nigeria by institut...

The study adopts an ex-post facto research design. The findings confirm the age-long devastating effects of human exploitation of land and its resources. It discovers that enhanced peace and security (proxied by defense expenditure) leads to improved environment (reduced Co2 emissions) and that gender equality improves environment as a result of reduction in Co2 emissions due to gender mainstreaming on environmental management. Similarly, it also discovers that increase in the quality of governance which is control for corruption [CC]) will decrease Co2 emissions and indicates that good governance leads to reduced Co2 emissions and thus, better environment but on the contrary, age index leads to an increase in Co2 emissions. Since the moderating effects of environmental impact assessment curtails Co2 emissions from high industrialization, environmental impac...

The indicators considered were economic progress (GDP per capita), health (infant mortality rate), access to water and sanitation. The ex-post facto research design was used in this study. Also, the Autoregressive Distributed Lags (ARDL) estimation method was chosen. Empirical findings show that there is a long-run relationship where the quality of health, water and sanitation has a positive effect on economic progress. The results indicate that access to water, sanitation and better health boosts the economic progress of Nigeria. It can be said that these facilities complement labour productivity. While comparing the policy options tested in this study, the improvement of the sanitation facilities has the highest marginal impact in fostering growth in Nigeria.

been a major source of revenue, energy and foreign
exchange for the Nigerian economy. Nigeria depends
heavily on revenue from crude oil but volatility in
price of the product has always put the country in
precarious economic situation. Against this
background, this paper analyzed the relationship
between crude oil price volatility and the Nigerian
economic performance from 1970 to 2018. It applied
Granger causality test and autoregressive distributed
lag (ARDL) model as estimation techniques. It could
be inferred from the findings that the influence of oil
price volatility, gasoline domestic pump price and
exchange rate are both short-run and long-run
phenomena while that of inflation and monetary
policy rate are only long term phenomenon. It was
found that crude oil price volatility, domestic pump
price of gasoline, exchange rate, inflation rate and
monetary policy rate have significant positive impact
on economic growth on the long-run periods, which
means that increase in earnings from crude oil and
appreciation of Naira increases the economic growth
of the country and decrease in crude oil earnings and
depreciation of Naira decreases the economic growth
of the country. Therefore, government should
diversify its earnings by developing agriculture,
industrialization and investment in order to reduce
the heavy reliance on crude oil and income
fluctuation resulting from the fluctuation in crude oil
prices in order to protect the country‟s economy. In
addition, government should reduce gasoline pump
price by deregulating the downstream sector and at
the same time encouraging private sector‟s
participation in crude oil refining in order to
encourage competition thereby bringing down the
price of fuel. Considering the importance of
exchange rate variable, these findings eventually
suggest that a systematic exchange rate via monetary
policy should be properly developed to promote the
stability and sustainability of economic growth in
Nigeria.

government supports and the effectiveness of compliance to government’s orders.
The questionnaire was designed to elicit relevant information regarding how
households coped with the COVID-19 induced lockdown in Nigeria. It was found
that most households had no contingency savings to address such emergencies;
therefore, the lockdown put a lot of strain on the personal income and savings of
households. It was also found that household rating of government supports was
very poor which led to partial compliance with the stay-at-home order. Finally, it
was found that the most preferred coping strategy was to take salary advance,
followed by going back to work and borrowing. The study recommends
contingency savings habit to households and controlling inflation rate to the
government as important steps for returning towards normality. The government of
Nigeria needs to prioritize the health sector in budget allocation for proper
healthcare delivery. The study also recommends contingency savings habit to

This study examines the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown on retail businesses in Nigeria ... more This study examines the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown on retail businesses in Nigeria with focus on the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It employs survey method of research in which 200 questionnaires were administered by hand and online to respondents across the federation. The study adopts descriptive statistics to analyze the perceptions of small scale business retailers on COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, COVID-19 pandemic financial constraints and survival strategies as well as overall rating of government's palliative measures. Our findings revealed that ownership status of the retailing business showed the preference for sole proprietorship amongst small businesses. Majority of the respondents observed partial compliance to the lockdown. By inference, despite enforcement, full lockdown was not obvious. What is obvious is that people mostly observed partial lockdown. Also, the strain on income and saving as a result of the pandemic was the most agreed upon a statement by the SMEs, thus reflecting a generally negative impact of COVID-19 on sales and revenues. However, the results reflect a general resilience amongst the SMEs as implied by their decision to borrow from friends and families, taking goods and supplies from creditors and bank loans in order to continue in their line of business despite the pandemic. The respondents generally disagreed with the government's palliatives measures in which they rated it very poor. By inference, lack of government's palliative lends support to the findings on non-compliance with full lockdown. In addition, irregular supply of electricity was one of the most agreed upon a ANALYSIS ARTICLE Page749 ANALYSIS statement by the SMEs, thus reflecting a generally negative impact of COVID19 on production activities as businesses had to resort to alternative power supply. Government should, therefore, provide adequate electricity, low-interest loans, relaxation of the loan repayment, and relaxation of taxation payment to enable them to survive the consequence of the pandemic.

analyze the perceptions of households regarding their survival strategies,
government supports and the effectiveness of compliance to government’s orders.
The questionnaire was designed to elicit relevant information regarding how
households coped with the COVID-19 induced lockdown in Nigeria. It was found
that most households had no contingency savings to address such emergencies;
therefore, the lockdown put a lot of strain on the personal income and savings of
The study also recommends contingency savings habit to
households and social inclusion to government along with giving out bailouts to
households, firms and industries to boost the economy

Nigeria from 1990 to 2015. The indicators considered were economic progress (GDP per capita), health (infant mortality
rate), access to water and sanitation. The ex-post facto research design was used in this study. Also, the Autoregressive
Distributed Lags (ARDL) estimation method was chosen. Empirical findings show that there is a long-run relationship
where the quality of health, water and sanitation has a positive effect on economic progress. The results indicate that
access to water, sanitation and better health boosts the economic progress of Nigeria. It can be said that these facilities
complement labour productivity. While comparing the policy options tested in this study, the improvement of the
sanitation facilities has the highest marginal impact in fostering growth in Nigeria.

Since the moderating effects of environmental impact assessment curtails Co2 emissions from high industrialization, environmental impact assessment should be mandatory for every firm that would be established. Also, government should increase defense budget, design new industrial policies, ensure gender mainstreaming, intensify anti-corruption fight and enact environmental sustainability laws to reduce Co2 emissions, and improve environment with the ultimate target of attaining peace and security in Nigeria.
