This paper shows another way to deal with speed control of DC Motor. Two nonlinear controllers, o... more This paper shows another way to deal with speed control of DC Motor. Two nonlinear controllers, one of sliding mode control and the other Fuzzy gain scheduling PID, characterize another control structure. Essentially, in this configuration procedure, the SMC and Fuzzy gain scheduling PID controller have been consolidated by a switching system which is chosen by the Fuzzy supervisory system. The sliding-mode controller acts essentially in a transient state while the fuzzy gain scheduler PID controller acts in the steady state. The new structure epitomizes the favorable circumstances that both nonlinear controllers offer: sliding-mode controllers provides the fast rise time and fuzzy gain scheduling PID controllers lessening the chattering in the steady state. The simulation results show that utilizing the new hybrid SMC fuzzy gain scheduling PID controller gives "better" system response as far as transient and steady state are concerned when compared with the SMC or fuzzy gain scheduling PID controller's applications. The controller parameters are tuned with the help of fuzzy logic.

This paper illustrates the size optimization of a hybrid energy system designed for a remote regi... more This paper illustrates the size optimization of a hybrid energy system designed for a remote region in India. This sustainable system combines a solar photovoltaic system and a wind turbine as a small-scale alternative source, where conventional generation is not practical. This alternative supply option includes the diesel generator as the backup source and the battery as the storage device. HOMER software obtained from the National Renewable Energy Website has been applied for simulation and evaluation purposes. The optimal system obtained in this way will be the one having the least net present cost (life-cycle cost). Furthermore, sensitivity analysis has been carried out on feasible systems for two variables, that is, diesel price and annual real interest rate, to examine the effect of variation of these variables on the type of the system. This futuristic situation leads to more favourable conditions for sustainable supply option with much reduced life-cycle cost of the system.

Using photovoltaic (PV) pumps has predominant advantages where grid connection is not available, good solar conditions exist, and distances from transport facilities are long. In solar powered pumps, pumping and transporting water from the source to end user requires a lot of energy. The energy required for pumping and transporting water can be obtained from solar powered pumps. The overall objective of this paper is to study the feasibility of solar powered pump/solar photovoltaic pump for drinking water supply in rural areas of Ethiopia and to compare the economics of photovoltaic pump with diesel generator powered pump.

In many applications of DC motor speed control systems, PID controllers are mostly used. Such con... more In many applications of DC motor speed control systems, PID controllers are mostly used. Such control schemes do not show good performance when input and load torque disturbances are applied. This paper shows that sliding mode (SM) can give better control due to its robust property but it has an unwanted chattering problem associated with it, which is harmful to the plant. To limit this problem a hybrid controller is presented in which a fuzzy controller is combined with the SM controller by a fuzzy supervisory system in such a way that the SM controller works in transient state and the fuzzy controller in steady state. The simulation results show that the SM controller is more robust when compared to PID and fuzzy control and hybrid control gives overall better system performance and reduced chattering when compared to SM control. Simulations are done using MATLAB software.

In this paper, a comparison is made for tuning methods of PID controller to improve the performan... more In this paper, a comparison is made for tuning methods of PID controller to improve the performance of the position control system of DC motor. Firstly, the PID controller is tuned using conventional Ziegler-Nichols method and then by using Simulink Response Optimization tool box available in MATLAB software. Further, Fuzzy gain scheduling of PID controller is investigated in which fuzzy rules are utilized on-line to adapt the PID controller parameters based on the error and its first time derivative. The result shows that the gain scheduling scheme for DC motor position control system have presented superior performance compared to other methods.
