We conducted a prospective analysis of all the cases admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a tertiary care hospital and studied the culture and sensitivity pattern of organisms isolated. The neonates who presented with signs and symptoms of septicemia, with/without pneumonia and/or meningitis were studied and a detailed record of the maturity, age at onset, sex, birth weight (weight on admission for home deliveries), symptoms and signs along with the maternal risk factors was made. The cases with suspect sepsis were screened using various screening markers. Blood culture was done in all the cases, while cerebrospinal fluid was analysed only in those indicated. Sensitivity of the isolated organism was tested by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion techniques and various drug resistance mechanisms were studied. Out of the 19...

A young girl of 15 years, who had recently returned from the neighbouring country of Guinea, presented with 04 months history of passing blood in stools. Schistosoma mansoni ova were found in stool and Schistosoma haematobium ova in urine. She was treated with tablet praziquantel. She became symptom-free in four weeks and the number of ova passed in stool and urine decreased.

A prospective study was conducted at the Department of Pathology, Paediatrics and Gynae/obst Combined Military Hospital, Gujranwala. Situation analysis was carried out, according to which a total of 56 cases of neonatal sepsis were diagnosed on the basis of clinical and lab criteria during a six month period from November 2005 to April 2006. The routine being followed in relation to neonates was observed by a team of doctors in the delivery room and the nursery. Certain observations were made regarding breach of infection control practices and specimens were collected from suspected sources of infections for cultures. Recommendations were made in the light of observations and the results of cultures of the specimens to interrupt the chain of infection and to eradicate the source/reservoir of infections in the delivery room and the nursery...

A total of 144 enterococci (Enterococcus faecalis, n=130, Enterococcus faecium, n=14) isolated and confirmed by biochemical tests at the department of Microbiology, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi, for a period of three years were included in the study. The antimicrobial susceptibility tests of isolated organisms were performed by standard disc diffusion method as recommended by NCCLS. In addition to nitrofurantoin (NIT), doxycycline (DOX), co-trimoxazole (COT), ampicillin (AMP), imipenem (IPM) and vancomycin (VAN) were used for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. One hundred and twenty seven (88%) isolates of Enterococci were susceptible to NIT while 72% (n = 103) to AMP, 13% to COT, 11% to DOX, 91% to IPM and 99% to VAN. Among the strains resistant to AMP, COT, DOX, IPM and VAN, 50-88% were sus...

A non-interventional comparative study. The study was carried out at the Department of Microbiology, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi between April and September 2001. Sera from patients suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis (n=94) with sputum positive for acid fast bacilli (AFB) and sera from control group of healthy individuals (n=90) with sputum negative for AFB were tested by Pathozyme-Myco G EIA, Pathozyme-TB Complex Plus EIA and Pathozyme Myco M EIA kits for the genus-specific IgG and IgM, and the species-specific IgG antibodies against antigens of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The detection of IgG against genus-specific antigens by Pathozyme-Myco G had a sensitivity of 46% and a specificity of 93%, of IgG against species-specific antigens by Pathozyme-TB Complex Plus had a sensitivity of 64% and sp...

Swabs/pus specimens from the patients developing surgical site infections at PNS Shifa, Karachi were processed in the Department of Pathology during January, 1998 to September, 1999. One hundred and twenty-nine swabs/pus specimens from various types of surgical sites suspected to be infected on clinical grounds were processed, by standard methods and antibiotic susceptibility testing of all the isolates was done by using Modified Kirby Baur disc diffusion technique. Of the one hundred and fifty-three organisms isolated, the most common was Staphylococcus aureus (50.32%), followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (16.3%), Escherichia coli (14.37%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (11.76%), miscellaneous gram negative rods (5.88%) and Streptococcus pyogenes (1.30%). About 50% of the Staphylococcus aureus isolates were found to be methicillin res...

The study was conducted at the Department of Medicine in collaboration with Departments of Dentistry and Pathology at PNS Shifa, Karachi during a period extending from July 1998 to June 1999. Patients presenting with symptoms/signs of chronic gastritis were included in the study. Specimens of dental plaque and gastric biopsy were collected from all the patients. The dental plaque specimen was processed for helicourease test and the gastric biopsy specimens were processed both for the helicourease test and histopathology. Out of all patients studied (n=52), 32 (61.53%) were positive for helicourease test with gastric biopsy while 48 (92.30%) were positive with dental plaque. The histopathology of gastric biopsy showed H. pylori associated chronic active gastritis in 42 (80.76%) patients. Eight (15.38%) patients showed chronic ...

Early diagnosis is the cornerstone of tuberculosis control strategies. Recent years have seen major advances in the fields of biotechnology and molecular biology with introduction of several new diagnostic techniques for tuberculosis and improvement in the existing ones. The new automated culture techniques have appreciably reduced the time required for detection and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The molecular amplification techniques like the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) have made the same-day diagnosis a reality. Improvements in serology and introduction of novel new techniques like the bacteriophage assays have also shown a lot of promise. However, most of these new techniques are too expensive and sophisticated to be of any practical benefit to the vast majority of TB patients living in underdeveloped countries like Pakistan for whom an early and inexpensive diagnosis remains as elusive as ever. In this article va...
