This is due to the fact that creation, sustenance, and growth of SMEs is believed to be the key ingredient for development of the industrial sector of an underdeveloped economy. The study examines the impact of small and medium scale enterprises on economic growth of Nigeria using time series data spanning between 1986 and 2016. The data is obtained from the statistical bulletin published yearly by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Regression analysis is employed for interpretation and analysis of the data collected for the study. The finding of the study reveals a positive and significant relationship between small and medium scale enterprises and output growth indicating that small and medium scale enterprises in Nigeria make positive contribution towards the development of Nigerian economy. The study recommends that government should formulate new economic policy to restrict massive importation of foreign goods especially those goods that the SMEs can produce locally in order to protect the local producers against competition with foreign firms. Efforts should also be made to ensure that adequate infrastructural facilities are in place for proper operation of SMEs in the country.

The paper employs Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. To ensure robustness of results, the study accounts for structural breaks in the unit root test and the co-integration analysis. The key findings of the study are that capital expenditure has positive and significant impact on economic growth both in the short run and long run while recurrent expenditure does not have significant impact on economic growth both in the short run and long run. The study recommends that government should increase the share of the capital expenditure especially on meaningful projects that have direct bearing on the citizen's welfare. Government should also improve the spending patterns of recurrent expenditure through careful reallocation of resources toward productive activities that would enhance human development in the country.

This study therefore explored the factors determining food insecurity among households in Gombe metropolis, Gombe State of Nigeria. The household data used in this study were collected through administration of copies of questionnaire. While employing summary statistics and logistic regression techniques, we analyzed the data. Although we administered 400 copies of questionnaire; only 381 copies were filled and returned. The descriptive analysis showed about 40 percent of the respondents were food insecure. The logit regression results suggest that household size and income were the important predictors of household food insecurity in Gombe metropolis. As expected, household size positively determines the probability for households to be food insecure whereas income negatively affects the probability. Therefore, the study recommends among others, that the government should create more job opportunities that will enhance the income level of people in order to reduce the magnitude of food insecurity. Secondly, the government should, if possible, introduce and advocate for the importance of family planning to curtail the population size.
The issue of inadequate capital by small and medium scale enterprises has been a growing concern ... more The issue of inadequate capital by small and medium scale enterprises has been a growing concern for policy makers and researchers in developing countries such as Nigeria. One of the viable ways of curtailing this menace especially in rural areas is providing loanable funds through microfinance institutions. The paper critically examines the impact of Microfinance Institutions (MFs) on the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Gombe state of Nigeria. The study adopted purposive and simple random sampling techniques to draw the sample from the population. SMEs were then randomly selected from four (4) Local Government Areas; namely; Gombe, Dukku, Akko and Kaltungologal government. Out of the 200 questionnaires administered, only 184 were properly filled and returned. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the data. The result reveals that MFIs have contributed immensely in the development of SMEs through provision of loanable fund and training. The study also reveals that high interest rate, lack of collateral security, too much bureaucracy and frequent repayment of loan are seriously affecting sustenance and expansion of SMEs in the study areas. Also, low awareness and prohibition of interest by some religious group have also crippled the activities of MFIs in the areas. The study recommends that MFIs should reduce the bureaucracy and administrative bottleneck in loan seeking process. This can be done through timely disbursement of credit, flexible repayment process and adequate awareness programmes. Again, government should provide alternative non-interest MFIs in the areas.

As renewed efforts are emerging to develop a new waqf regime in the country, this study examines this aspect in Gombe metropolis, Nigeria, with a view to identifying the key factors shaping people's perception and awareness towards waqf.Design/methodology/approachTo achieve the objective of this study, primary data were collected through a survey among 494 business owners in the Gombe metropolis. The data were then analysed using probit and Tobit regression models.FindingsThe study found that altruistic behaviour, religiosity level, educational level and young age are among the factors that determine people's perception and awareness towards donating to waqf among business owners in Gombe. Altruism and young age embolden businesspersons to recognise the effectiveness of waqf institutions in solving socioeconomic challenges.Practical impli...

In this paper, we re-examine the causal relationship between government expenditure and economic growth by conducting the panel Granger causality test recently developed by Hurlin (2004, 2005) and by utilizing a richer panel data set which includes 182 countries that cover the period from 1950 to 2004. Our empirical results strongly support both Wagner's law and the hypothesis that government spending is helpful to economic growth regardless of how we measure the government size and economic growth. When the countries are disaggregated by income levels and the degree of corruption, our results also confirm the bi-directional causality between government activities and economic growth for the different subsamples of countries, with the exception of the low-income countries. It is suggested that the distinct feature of the low-income countries is likely owing to their inefficient governments and inferior institutions.

However, it is observed that the majority of studies are conducted in developed and emerging economies. This study is unique in its own right by exploring the effect of innovation and financial development on economic growth using panel data for 30 sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries from 2001-2018. The study employed symmetric panel ARDL, common correlated effect ARDL, and asymmetric panel ARDL. Our empirical findings revealed a long-run effect of innovation and financial development on the economic growth of SSA. This means that expansion of the financial sector and better innovation activities in SSA stimulate long-term economic growth. Robustness tests provided consistent results with the baseline findings. The study therefore recommends that to promote sustained economic growth and development in the region, policy ...

First, 1359 publications particularly related to the field of FinTech, from 2010 to 2021, were collected from the Scopus database. This study analyzed the fundamental issues and characteristics of FinTech in research, such as the annual contribution of publication, hot in the press, and foci, using theme analysis, concurrence analysis, and timeline analysis of authors’ keywords. Second, prolific objects, such as journals, authors, institutions, countries, regions, and corresponding pivotal cooperative relationship mapping were used to present who leads considerable attention in FinTech research. Third, the citation structures of authors and journals were investigated, and presented the burst detection analysis of cited authors, journals, and references. Finally, combining the analysis results with the current financial environment, the challenges and future development opportunities are discussed further. This bibliometric analysis revealed an increasing annual publication trend, a shifting focus on financial inclusion, a dominance of authors from the USA, and a growing number of international collaborations and publications from different sources, indicating FinTech as a lively field with potential for further scientific enrichment. The main reason behind such mixed results may be the lack of capital stock and labour force in the growth–trade relationship. In this study, we re-examine the impact of trade openness and FDI on economic growth. Hence, we used annual time series data for the period of 1996–2019. We evaluate the robustness of our findings by using more than one index of trade openness and by controlling relevant variables that are found significant in growth literature. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model is used in this article. The results indicate that FDI and capital stock are linked to economic growth in the short and long term. Trade openness, on the other hand, has a negative impact not only on short-term but also on long-term growth. Furthermore, we discovered corruption, inflation and labour force to have signi...

Of particular interest is the extent to which countries of different kinds are limited in their ability to adjust borrowing and fiscal revenue. Whilst all countries appear to face substantial borrowing and revenue constraints, significant differences emerge between low-and high-debt countries.

The study aimed at examining whether size of working capital of small businesses will mediate the relationship between entrepreneurship education and small business management. This study is important because researches conducted indicated that entrepreneurship education alone did not influence small business management in Gombe state but by introduction of working capiatal as a mediator a very significant influence resulted of entrepreneurship education on small business management. Two hundred and sixteen (216) questionnaires were administered to fifty (50) small businesses managers in Gombe so as to ascertain their perception in this regard. This study was conducted to empirically examine the influence of socioeconomic as well as demographic variables on households’ vulnerability to social exclusion or deprivation with more emphasis on gender inequality. The study employed binary probit regression analysis of poverty as well as Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition to examine factors responsible for inequality with respect to socio-economic fortunes among Nigerian households. Evidence from the study revealed that socio-demographic variables as well as labor characteristics are strong determinants of poverty in the country, and the findings confirmed to the theoretical propositions on causes of poverty. However, empirical results from the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition show that female headed households are more disadvantaged in terms of socioeconomic deprivation than the male headed ho...
