Low energy houses are forms of housing that use less energy from the design, technologies and bui... more Low energy houses are forms of housing that use less energy from the design, technologies and building products from any source than a traditional or average contemporary house. The survey dataset examines architect's awareness and adoption of building envelope technologies (BET) for energy efficient housing in Lagos State, Nigeria. The dataset was based on seventy-four (74) returned questionnaires of both registered and non-registered Architects. A multistage sampling that involved cluster sampling and random sampling of architects in Lagos State was adopted. Descriptive statistical tools were used to present the dataset. The dataset contains the intent of promoting energy sustainability by architect while designing their building envelopes, the awareness of the building envelope strategies to adopt, factors influencing their adoption of these strategies, strategies that can be adopted to improve adoption of building envelope technologies for energy efficiency in housing units. The dataset can be used for evolving housing energy policy by decision makers.

Technical Education in recent times has witnessed high patronage in term of subscription from mal... more Technical Education in recent times has witnessed high patronage in term of subscription from male and female candidates; this is against the school of thought that believes that technical-based disciplines are cut out for men. However in recent times, female candidates seem to be outperforming their male counterpart breaking the norms which tends to have defied reasonable logic. It is against this background that this study carried out comparative analysis of academic performances of male and female students studying technical-based disciplines in selected tertiary institution. Covenant University in Nigeria was chosen as a location of the study. Random sampling method was used in the study, with a sample of 80 students. A structured questionnaire in Likert scale was administered on student of technical based discipline, Eighty (80) questionnaires was administered on the students to harvest their perspective. The responses were further collated, analyzed with SPSS software, processed with Mean Item Score method and presented in tables and charts. Some factors were identified as being responsible for the trend, which includes: Age diference, emotional maturity, intelligence quotient, educational background, external interference, famiy problem, teachers challenge, complex curriculum, psychological problem, family problem, mode of subject delivery, attention to detail among others. Model was presented of an ideal metrics that influences higher performance of female students over their counterpart and what could be done to improve performance of all gender components.

A B S T R A C T Many challenges of Nigerian urban built environment for over three decades have c... more A B S T R A C T Many challenges of Nigerian urban built environment for over three decades have centered on poor state of infrastructure and services. The numerous effects of rapid urbanization process on housing environment have been identified in Ota-a nodal town that currently accommodates many unwarranted environmental conditions of which environmental degradation and infrastructural decay are obvious manifestation. The environmental audits and surveys carried out in Ota reveals lots of evidences of poor living condition especially among the residents of the old residential enclave of the town. Apparently many reviewed urban revitalization literatures are perceived to have played an important role in the policy towards sustainable development of cities. The study achieves this through a copious review of literature in urban renewal programmes which helps in drawing out many effective urban renewal strategies for Nigerian cities. The study concludes that any development Programme in Ota town should involve Communities participation (also called bottom-up approach). In other words the idea of recognizing contributions by various actors enhances participatory development.

Traditionally, the culture comprised of experiences, habits and patterns within the studio space. These unique learning environments have been observed to be deserted by students due to some factors that were either neglected or not properly positioned in the context of the schools’ ‘modus operandi’. This paper examined the attitudes of students towards design studio in schools of architecture. An in-depth investigation of studio culture, policy, implementation strategies and students’ attitudes was carried out in lieu of deserted studio. It was tailored after the studio culture policies of four (4) selected schools in south-west Nigeria. Findings revealed that culture demystification, motivational factors and institutional policies are some of the factors responsible for deserted studio. The study showed commonalities and varied conceptual indices of the terms "studio culture" in each case. The study recommended specificity of sustainable studio culture policy, operation and implementation strategies for architecture schools in Nigeria as a way of curbing the menace of deserted studios. Considering the fact that the period between 1854 and 1929AD has been identified as the first pha... more Considering the fact that the period between 1854 and 1929AD has been identified as the first phase of emergence and development of ecclesiastical architecture in Nigeria, this, therefore, became the earliest period and this study examined the characteristics of the church buildings during this period. Among the churches that were built during this period, five were significantly prominent and still exist. This study examined two because those buildings shared similar characteristics. As the study was an explorative one and historical in nature it adopted qualitative method of non-participant observation, historical and unstructured interview methods of gathering data using descriptive method of analysis. This study found that Churches were dominated by foreign established missions as indigenous ones were yet to evolve. Gothic style dominated the period characterised by its usual strong focus on verticality, pointed arches, rib vaults, flying buttresses, large stained glass windows, ornaments and pinnacles. Construction works and financing relied heavily on foreign input. It also noted that construction materials were imported and the church buildings were more of foreign monuments rather than industrial or makeshift. Nigerian cultural, geographical, geological, climatic, existing religious and social factors were not major considerations. The study concluded that the characteristics of the early church buildings were significantly at variance with the current trends.

In many Nigerian architectural schools, the jury system is used to examine the students' architectural design studio projects. However, it is observed that the system has applied in various schools may be prone to subjectivisms and variations of the jurors. The aim of this paper is to critically examine the jury system as applied in two schools of architecture located in southwest Nigeria. While one school is domiciled in a government owned university, the other is located in a privately owned university. Data is based on analysis of relevant documents, observation of jury assessment processes and group discussions with staff and students. Result revealed that jury processes in the schools showed more similarities rather than differences. Furthermore, the jury system also aids in the teaching and learning of students. The paper concludes that to improve learning dynamics in architectural design studio, learning environments must incorporate diverse delivery and jury assessment modes that retort to student learning styles.
