In this article, I will first give a very brief description of the various approaches applied by these disciplines to understand leadership. Later, my focus will be on the organizational behavior approach as this approach is mostly used in management books taught at business schools, and in leadership training programs.

Research is, however, not the answer to all leadership-related arguments as there will always exist some difference of opinion among scholars on certain issues. More than 100 years of leadership research has however now resolved many fundamental mysteries about the phenomenon. Now we know correct answers to arguments like whether leaders are born or made and do leadership training work.

Whether in the arena of politics or the context of organizational management, we see certain indi... more Whether in the arena of politics or the context of organizational management, we see certain individuals who were admired and followed by many. Such influential personalities are said to have good leadership skills. In the field of politics, we know leaders like Nelson Mandela, George Washington, and Mikhail Gorbachev who had an immense influence over the people and were able to bring about enormous changes in society. Moreover, in the corporate world, we know highly admired leaders like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Jack Ma, who transformed their organizations into immensely successful business entities. Other than planning, organizing, and controlling, leading is considered as one of the four foundation pillars of management. Due to its charismatic nature, this pillar of management has not only fascinated organizational managers at all levels but also political personalities who wanted to rule some piece of land as a king, prime minister, or president. This article discusses the meaning and purpose of the leadership phenomenon.

of managing their supply chains effectively and efficiently to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. A supply chain is a complex phenomenon associated with multiple functions, organizations, and processes to deliver goods and services to customers. Supply chain professionals have to deal with multiple people at various entities to achieve supply chain goals. This is especially true for supply chain managers working for “channel master” organizations. Therefore,
managing supply chains effectively requires excellent leadership skills on part of supply chain professionals. This article reviews the leadership and supply chain management literature and then combines the two streams of knowledge to gain additional insights into the significance of effective leadership skills in managing the global supply chains. The article further highlights the areas of future research related to the topic.

The effectiveness of a leadership style may vary according to the context in which the leader is ... more The effectiveness of a leadership style may vary according to the context in which the leader is operating. It is quite possible that a leader who is effective in one organization or social setup does not remain as effective when moved to another organization or social setup. Therefore, considering the context in which a leader is operating is an important dimension to consider in leadership studies. Moreover, a leader operating in one environment must have in mind that his or her particular style of leadership may not work effectively in another environment. Hackman (2010) during his closing speech following two days of discussions on leadership at Harvard Business School centennial colloquium on advancing leadership, asserted: Context is indeed a challenge: What are we to do about the radical differences in the context of leadership for, say, a Boy Scout troop, a senior leadership team, a professional string quartet, and a product development team in an industrial firm? Could it really be true that leadership operates the same way in these radically different contexts? Indeed, does leadership even mean the same thing across the contexts? The two most common suggestions for dealing with contextual differences are to develop contingency theories that take account of context, and to develop mid-range theories that are tailored for certain contexts but that are not presumed or expected to apply to others. (as cited in Nohria & Khurana, 2010, p. 111). Lorsch (2010) argues that leaders behave in the context of social systems around them that depends upon followers' expectations, organizational complexity, international differences, and the organization's task. Cultural context is one of the dimensions of the overall context in which a leader is operating.
