Global Centre of Excellence for Advanced Research in Sericulture and Promotion of Silk Production... more Global Centre of Excellence for Advanced Research in Sericulture and Promotion of Silk Production (GCEARS-PSP) is an important organisation for Romanian sericulture; the main aim of the centre is the revival of Romanian sericulture, the maintenance of Bombyx mori gene pool and the development of research in this domain. The moderate continental climate in Romania does not permit the rearing of silkworms all over the year and consequently, the production of silk is related to mulberry leaves production. A dietary substituent for the mulberry leaves is therefore needed. We herein tried to develop an alternative food recipe by including different concentrations of bee pollen to the commercial artificial diet recipe and measure its impact on larvae length and weight and silk production; our results demonstrate a good adaptability of silkworms to the artificial diet, and the addition of bee pollen improves the studied parameters, but without significant differences.

As a rural economic activity, sericulture is being usually, at small scale, being given a cottage industry character. The main goal of the current paper is to assess the potential of the Romanian silk value chain trough the point of view given by the value chain analysis perspective. Main elements used in the current research are represented by the comparative analysis of the values of imports, exports, trade balance and national production of silk and silk derived products in the following period of 2001-2018. The study will help highlight the potential for development within the sericulture national value chain highlighting the entry points in the value chain and identifying new internal and external markets.

This parasite managed to switch from its natural host the Eastern honeybee, A. cerana, and within a few decades, it spread among A. mellifera populations around the world. Today beekeepers are using a variety of different acaricides to keep the parasite population under control. However, for many of these substances, the parasite evolved resistance asking for the development of novel compounds. Hence the treatment is less suited as a sustainable tool in honeybee health; consequently, other alternative options are needed, and breeding of Varroa resistant honeybees have been suggested as a more sustainable solution. Here we reviewed the successful efforts and the apicultural procedures needed to be implemented to achieve resistant honeybees. We also describe the underlying resistance mechanisms and discuss the benefits of breeding within regional populations, considerin...

However, the presence of over-represented pollen in honeys may lead to false results of the analysis. This can be more severe if this pollen is present in unifloral under-represented honeys of commercial importance (e.g. thyme or acacia honey). In the present study, we investigated the abundance of nectarless pollen grains on several quality characteristics in honey samples. In particular, the physic-chemical (diastase activity, electrical conductivity, sugars and HMF content) analysis were carried out in order to confirm the declared botanical origin. Spectrophotometric method was used for diastase activity determination, electrical conductivity was determined by potentiometry and chromatographic determinations for HMF content (photodiode array detection) and sugars (HPLC refractive index detection). The present study confirms that, in the case of non-nectariferous pollen pr...

Prunus domestica L. is one of the tree fruits threatened by Plum pox potyvirus (PPV), a quarantine disease that causes fruit loss to plums and other stone fruits. HoneySweet is a plum tree created to be resistant to this virus. Beside genetical determinations, chemical composition and nutritional value are important for a future acceptance in the cultivation of this type of fruit trees. Two conventional (Renclod Althan and Stanley) and one genetically engineered (HoneySweet) plum fruits were evaluated for the nutritional value determination. The analyzed samples showed nutritionally valuable features. HoneySweet variety had a balanced content of individual carbohydrates. The total lipid content had values quite close to the HoneySweet and Stanley varieties, far superior to Renclod Althan variety. HoneySweet transgenic plum had the highest total protein content. Also, HoneySweet variety is distinguished by a balanced prot...

One of the main aims of Global Centre of Excellence for Advance Research in Sericulture and Promotion of Silk Production (GCEARS-PSP) is to create a reserve of Morus spp., to multiply the vegetal material and to provide it to farmers and also to create an important biotechnological support for further scientifically works. As in Romania the intensive plantations are almost non-existent, one of the main objective of the centre is to create a real base for sericulture revival (the existence of nutritional base for silkworms) and to develop the biotechnological scientific component of the centre. The aims of this review are to create a clear overview of moriculture for sericulture and to reveal the biotechnological potential and pharmacological uses of different mulberry parts. In this review the major findings regarding description of Kokuso 21 variety, mulberry microp...

Plants of the genus Morus are known to be a rich source of bioactive compounds from flavonoids and phenolic acids, compounds with known antioxidant and other benefic properties. The aim of the present study was the characterization of mulberry extracts (from leaves and fruits) regarding their chemical composition and determination of some bioactive properties of the mentioned matrices. Sugar profile, total protein and lipid content, total phenolics and flavonoids, mineral composition and aminoacid profile were determined. Mulberry leaves are important protein sources (being the principal feed for silkworm) and also important source of free aminoacids, including the essential ones. 25 free aminoacids (aa), were identified and quantified by internal standard method using LC-MS and EZ: faast Phenomenex kit. The main aa were alanine ...
