In fact, most archaeological excavations are not completely investigated because of the lack of funds destined to cultural heritage and the archaeological competences intervene especially when building works bump accidentally into archaeological findings. Emergency excavations cannot pull any whole osteoarchaeological sample, thus the anthropological study is never exhaustive. In addition to this, in Italy there are still problems related to a lack of job perspective because there is not an adequate professional recognition of the bioarchaeologist. Perhaps the issues should be discussed at the root, namely that there is no clear university education that prepares for this type of profession. Today, only a postgraduate education (PhD or Master) can determine the acquisition of specific skills in the several specialties of Bioarcheology. In an era of cultural crisis, as ours is nowadays, it is a ...

From his writings, the relevance of his theoretical reflection under different aspects emerged: epistemological, methodological and psychopathological and of humanization of the treatment of the mentally ill.

In addition to explaining in general terms how these diseases occur, we bring in support of the above, examples of pathologies related to our osteological sample. The human remains come from a dozen archeological sites covering necropolises and medieval churches of the province of Varese (dated from the 7th Century to the Modern Age). The findings that we hereby present were analysed according to the methods of physical anthropology and paleopathology.

The cases presented, which occurred one in 1901 and the other in 1902, are of particular interest both for the rarity of cannibalism connected to the homicidal acts carried out by people suffering from serious psychiatric diseases and because they were among the first objects of psychiatric observation in Italy. The article described the “pathological cannibalism” under the forensic psychopathological and criminal anthropological points of view. From the analysis performed by Penta, it emerged an important difference between the murdered and the killing cannibal for the particular violence and brutality of the latter.

Since its birth in 1895, x-ray has been useful in studying archeobiolgical finds. As a non-destructive technique of investigations, radiology allows for analysis of archaeological finds without damaging them. Radiological investigations in anthropology are very important to assist: i) reconstruction of biological profile (age at death, sex, stature and ethnicity; ii) diagnosis pathological conditions and life style (diet, physical stress, etc.); iii) interpretation of post depositional process (diagenetic or taphonomic factors).

The journal of maternal-fetal & neonatal medicine : the official journal of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine, the Federation of Asia and Oceania Perinatal Societies, the International Society of Perinatal Obstetricians, Jan 24, 2017

This paper presents the singular archaeological discovery of a foetal tile preserving the bone remains, object of our anthropological examination. The foetal tile was discovered during an archaeological excavation in a medieval site (Northern Italy). The tile was analysed by CT scan and later, human remains were anthropologically examined. The archaeological investigation revealed a special ritual destined to foetuses while forensic anthropological analysis allowed estimating the gestational age near to 21-24 weeks.

The aim of our current research is to reconstruct pathomechanics, treatment and gait of an individual from a Late Medieval femur with evident bone callus. In particular, to reconstruct the dynamic of the trauma that caused the injury and the adopted therapeutic measures, taking into account medical knowledges of that time. The femur was recovered during the archaeological investigation in the Sanctuary of Sacro Monte, Varese (Northern Italy). Classical physical anthropological methods and CT scans were used for macroscopic and radiological measurements of the bone. Finally, the reconstruction of the static and dynamic functional outcomes of the lesion were performed by Observation Gait Analysis (OGA) procedure. The femur shows an important callus at the middle third proximal of the shaft. The antemortem fracture was oblique and caused by a direct trauma probably related to occupational activities. The alignment of the segments in the frontal plane lead us to assume that the fracture was treated and the femur was immobilized with splints. The overlap and the angle of the segments indicate that the subject was not submitted to traction or fracture reduction. Good bone remodeling and consolidation of the fracture suggest that the subject had gradually led to the resumption of load and walking, although with important effects on posture and movement. The use of the OGA allows us to highlight the subject's kind of gait after healing.

That request to enhance our historical understanding of the past from the standpoint of the animals was innovative at a time when the prevailing historical currents focused on human mummies and so-called “valuable” re- mains. The approach represents the earliest instance of a scientific shift to obtain information on the complex and intimate relationships developed in ancient Egypt between humans and animals.
