Maize is the most popular cereal in the district and is usually given preference over other cereal crops because it is considered more palatable. The broad objective of this study was to determine the onset of the rainy season(s) as a basis at determining the optimum planting time of maize in the area, given the nature and sequence of rainfall occurrence at the beginning of the year, and the soil moisture storage throughout the growing season. The relationship between soil moisture deficit and maize yields was also examined in an attempt to explain the variation in maize yields over the years. Data for this study were largely obtained from various secondary sources. The data types collected for this study included the ten day totals for rainfall, relative humidity, wind-run and pan evaporation. Data on soil moisture storage capacities for representative soils of each division and annual maize yields per division were also collected. The sample of stations considered for this study was based on the consistency of rainfall records for the study period 1971 to 1990. The spatial distribution of the stations was also looked at in terms of the rainfall gradients and distribution within the different divisions. Twelve stations were finally selected for this study based on these criteria. The status of the soil moisture condition during the growing season was determined and then related to the maize yields. The onset of the growing season was determined on the basis of ten day (decadal) rainfall totals and a water balance analysis was performed to establ ish the water deficit and surplus periods within the growing season. The onset of the growing season was defined as rainfall events beginning on or after the first decade of February each year

These students must acquire necessary social and cultural skills in order to navigate contrasting value systems and educational expectations despite potential cognitive and learning deficits. The combination of teacher bias and educational deficits imposes psychological stressors that inhibit the learning process. Acquisition of social-emotional and cultural competence relies heavily on teacher expertise. This article examines three key barriers (social interaction, social competence, and cultural competence) and proposes a line of inquiry for teachers to plan strategies and interventions that target socially valid and culturally relevant competencies for CLD students with disabilities.

These teachers must recognize and address the vast cultural, ethnic and language differences represented while at the same time adhering to the different accountability based federal and state mandates. This chapter provides an overview of the policies regarding education of English Language Leaners (ELLs), examines different ethnic groups represented within ELL subgroups including basic demographic information across the different states in the U.S. The chapter also examines challenges hindering school success and effective instructional support and strategies that facilitate language development and academic literacy.

Researchers looked at the mesosystemic interactions between the microsystems of the family and the microsystems of the school through the eyes of the families in order to capture “third parties” and common patterns of social relations and interactions that families engaged in around school. Families insisted on keeping home and school settings separate and revealed complex social networks that mediated families’ thinking about school and motivated alternative conceptions of their involvement in their children’s education. Implications are discussed.

The purpose was to understand how pre-service teacher reflections influenced teacher educator reflections within a course. Data collection methods included narrative and document review. Data analysis methods included multiple readings and discussions of individual portraits in search of answers to research questions. Findings include a parallel reflection model that illustrates a dynamic process that occurs within the dialogic space as student and professor thoughts and discourse are interwoven to make theory to practice connections, co-construct new knowledge and begin challenging existing beliefs and dispositions through their reflections.

This rapid expansion has been attributed to increased student demand, declining budgets, recruitment and retention efforts. A study conducted by Babson College's Arthur M. Blank Center for Entrepreneurship reported that approximately 33.5% of college students completed at least one online course before graduation. The authors also reported that 70.8% of Chief Academic Officers (CAOs) reported that expansion of online course offerings was critical to the long-term strategic plan for their universities. Despite the growth in online enrollment, many institutions find online course development to be a costly, labor-intensive process. This chapter provides an overview of the different components of a quality online course and examines best practices for training and supporting online instructors through the c...
