This study examines the effect of self-management training on smartphone dependence among male high school students. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, data were collected using the Cell Phone Addiction Scale (Koo, 2009), which was completed by the trial and control groups before and after the educational intervention. After assessing their normal distribution, the data were analysed using the Chi-square test, the independent and paired t-tests, Mann–Whitney's U-test, and the Wilcoxon test at a significance level of p < .05. Results: The results showed significant post-intervention reductions in the mean score of smartphone dependence (35.10) and its three domains, including withdrawal/tolerance (14.80), life dysfunction (8.70), and compulsion/persistence (11.60), in the trial group compared ...

The objective of this study is to determine the most important factors that influence the effectiveness of academics' teaching methods from his/her graduate students' point of view. Methods: This is a cross sectional-analytic study conducted in 2014. The participants were selected by census method according to the Registrar data of the School of Allied Medical Sciences, Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The data collection tool was a questionnaire containing demographic questions as well as nine questions about effective factors on teaching. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were assessed, and the data was analyzed using analytic hierarchy process and Expert Choice V. 11 software. Results: According to the students participating in the study, the eloquent, simple expression and clear conveyance of the subject were the most important factors (0.216), while the assessment of students at each session, in the mid-term exam, and in the final exam was of the lowest importance regarding the effectiveness of academic teaching (0.057). No significant difference was found between male and female students considering factors affecting effective teaching. Conclusion: Results indicated that the eloquent and simple expression of subjects has the greatest impact on teaching effectiveness. Therefore, to promote the current situation, the high-ranking educational authorities of the university are required to take into account the quality of teaching effectiveness, for instance, to organize appropriate and purposeful training courses.

However, students&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; reasons for choosing medicine do not seem rational. We compared students who made an informed choice about entering medicine with those who did not, in terms of academic success. The study was carried out with a self-administered questionnaire on 220 final-year medical students randomly selected from six Iranian medical schools. Depending on their informed choice of entering medicine or not at the time of application, they were divided into two groups. We compared these two groups&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; academic achievement as well as their satisfaction with medicine. The students who had not made an informed choice had a higher tendency not to choose medicine if they were to start over (p value ≤0.001). The pre-admission scores of students who had made an informed choice of medicine were worse than the other group (p = 0.03). However, their final year scores as well as their satisfaction with medicine were higher than the other group. Idealistic views of medicine should be replaced by rational and logical ones to help students select the careers best suited to their abilities and talents.

A major and important cause of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease (CHD) is elevated cholesterol level. In order to clarify the significance of elevated Total Cholesterol (TC) in children who live in Tehran, we measured the lipid profiles including TC, Triglyceride (TG), and High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) of 1000 twelveyear-old children. Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) value was calculated by using Friedwald formula. The mean level of TC in all cases reached 170 ± 39mg/dl. The mean level of LDL-C, HDL-C and TG were 101 ± 38mg/dl, 48 ± 12mg/dl, and 105 ± 52mg/dl, respectively. TC level in 16.4% of the cases was above 200mg/dl and 16% had LDL-C levels more than 130mg/dl. Mean LDL-C level in the boys was 6.2mg/dl (with 95% confidence interval of 1.3 to 11.1) more than girls. Also mean HDL-C level in the girls was 4.1mg/dl (with 95% confidence interval of 2.5 to 5.7) more than that of boys (p-value in both=0.000). TC and HDL-C levels in the northern parts of Tehran were significantly higher than the southern parts. Mean LDL-C and TG levels didn't show any differences. Regarding the normal range of TC (<170mg/dl), the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia in Tehran seems unacceptable.

This study aimed to develop and validate a tool to evaluate attitude of medical students and physicians toward conflict management. Method A multi-step process was employed to develop and validate a Conflict Management Attitude Questionnaire (CMAQ) based on the steps recommended in AMEE Guide No. 87. First, the initial items were obtained from the literature review and focus group. After cognitive interviews with the medical students and revision of the questionnaire, content validity was performed by experts. The construct validity and reliability of the questionnaire were assessed using exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, respectively. Results This multi-step process resulted in a 12-item, five-point Likert-type questionnaire with satisfactory construct validity. Exploratory factor analysis revealed three factors, comprising the fou...

This study aimed to compare the efficacy of linear and adaptive electronic continuing medical education (CME) courses about dental bleaching. Methods: This quasi-experimental study using a post-test control group design evaluated the efficacy of an electronic CME course on dental bleaching offered to 60 dentists who were non-randomly allocated in two linear and adaptive groups (n = 30). One training session was held for participants of both the intervention and the control groups. At the end of the course, the learners participated in a post-test and completed a satisfaction questionnaire. SPSS 23 was used to analyze the results. An independent t test was used to assess the effect of type of intervention on the outcome of education, and Pearson's chi-square test was applied to assess the effect of the intervention on participants' satisfaction. Results: The mean post-test scores of participants were 6.33 ± 1.47 for the linear group and 6.40 ± 2.31 for the adaptive group. The mean satisfaction scores of participants were 4.02 ± 0.53 for the linear group and 4.15 ± 0.42 for the adaptive group. According to an independent t-test, the two groups were not significantly different in terms of post-test score (P = 0.7) or level of satisfaction (P = 0.2). Conclusion: The adaptive approach has considerable advantages and comparable efficacy to the linear method in terms of post-test score and self-reported knowledge and satisfaction of participants. Thus, this method of education may be as effective as the linear method for instruction in dental bleaching. The use of an adaptive approach is therefore recommended in educational curricula.

No model has been yet proposed to use this framework particularly for a system of assessment. This study provided a model for the validation of the internal medicine residents’ assessment system, based on the Kane's framework. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through a five stages study, first, by reviewing the literature, the methods used, and the study challenges, in using Kane's framework, were extracted. Then, possible assumptions about the design and implementation of residents’ tests and the proposed methods for their validation at each of their four inferences of Kane's validity were made in the form of two tables. Subsequently, in a focus group session, the assumptions and proposed validation methods were reviewed. In the fourth stage, the opinions of seven internal medicine professors were asked abo...

We conducted this study to determine differences in the field of education between Iranian dental schools by stratifying their educational services. Method: To measure the educational performance that could be utilized to rate the schools nationwide, a benchmarking tool, consisting of about 60 indicators, was devised. Each school was asked to introduce a representative who would complete a questionnaire, which was designed to collect schools’ information. In the next step, all the divisions were visited by one of the project’s members and the school’s representative to revise and approve the data. Then, data retrieval was pe...
