Besides, duplicate scotch tape slides were obtained and examined microscopically for Enterobius vermicularis and Taenia sp. eggs. A questionnaire containing demographic data was filled for every case, and the relationship between them and the parasitic infection was assayed. Overall, intestinal parasitic prevalence was 42.5%. Prevalence of Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba coli, Blastocystis hominis, Iodamoeba butschlii, Enterobius vermicularis and Hymenolepis nana was 20.5, 14.6, 13.3, 2.5, 10.6 and 0.2%, respectively. No statistic relation was proved between these infections, having tap water facility at home or family population (except for E. vermicularis), but there was a significant relationship between parents' education level and family population. According to relatively high prevalence of parasitic infections in the study field, it is necessary to increase hygienic and educational measures.

Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are widely distributed throughout the world, especially in... more Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are widely distributed throughout the world, especially in developing countries. Mortality and morbidity rates of these infections are significant. Infections are mainly transmitted via ingestion of water, soil or food contaminated by faeces containing the cysts and ova of protozoans and helminthes, respectively. In many cases, clinical features of the infections remain asymptomatic and consequently carriers act as on-going sources of infection within their community. In this regard, food handlers within a community may contribute disproportionately to the prevalence of infection. Therefore, studying the rate of intestinal parasitic contamination retrospectively among food handlers is important in order to design more effective systematic monitoring of infections in a region. The recorded results of stool examination for 62,007 people during a recent 10-year period (2000 to 2009) in Khuzestan, Southwest Iran, were analyzed. In total, 4,830 (8.8%) and 15,750 (25.4%) were contaminated by pathogenic and non-pathogenic parasites, respectively, demonstrating continuous protozoan and helminthic contamination among food handlers. In conclusion, we suggest that the current system for monitoring of IPIs in food handlers is not sufficient and provide recommendations for changes, such as improving delivery of hygiene information to the target group and changing the periodicity of stool examination for food handlers from once to twice per year.

Methodology: This case -control study was performed on 72 children (case) with cancer who were referred to oncology clinic of Urmia Imam Hospital. Another 30 children with normal immune system were selected as controls. To determine the amount of contamination with Cryptosporidium, two fecal specimens were collected from each patient and control group. After being concentrated with Formalin-Ether, these specimens were examined using modified acid fast method. Results: Three cases of cryptosporidiosis were seen in the patients (4.16%). Of these, there were two patients from the rural area and one from urban region. There was no significant relationship between the presence of cryptosporidiosis and living in rural or urban areas. No oocystic form of Cryptosporidium was detected in the control group. Conclusions: Since children suffering from cancer are at risk of to acquiring many infections, general preventive measures against infection must be taken and patients must be screened for opportunistic parasites during chemotherapy.

Giardia lamblia (AGL), a polyclonal antibody with the nature of IgG, is produced by animal immune system including rabbit after repeated immunizations with cysts of G. lamblia. Purified AGL was coated in polystyrene micro Elisa plates, in order to detect antigen from supernatant of stool samples using sandwich Elisa. Then a second anti Giardia antibody conjugated with peroxidase was added for attaching to the capture antigen. The aim of this project was the purification of AGL by a simple, rapid and inexpensive method; ion exchange chromatography. AGL riched serum of immunized rabbit with Giardia lamblia cysts was precipitated with ammonium sulfate at the final concentration of %50, dialyzed against Tris-phosphate and applied to Ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-sepharose 6B. AGL riched fraction was eluted with starting Tris-phosphate and final buffer, Tris-phosphate containing 70mM NaCl. After ammonium sulfate precipitation and dialyzing the serum of immunized rabbits. AGL was isolated by IEC on DEAE-sepharose column. The purity of AGL with high percent purity was confirmed by SDS-PAGE. In this study we obtained a protein with approximate purity of 98%, approved by SDS-PAGE. This product could be used for preparing related conjugate and finally for designing Elisa kits in order to detect antigen from stool samples.

Toxoplasmosis is very important in pregnant women. Seroepidemiological survey of toxoplasmosis in young girls before marriage for identifying non immune girls could be used to prevent congenital toxoplasmosis. A seroepidemiological study of toxoplasma IgG-antibody in 516 high school girls was conducted. Sample cases were chosen randomly from public high school girls. Blood samples were collected and the obtained sera were examined for anti toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies by using ELISA method. Prevalence of toxoplasmosis in high school girls in Bushehr city was 22.1%. There was significant correlation between seropositivity of toxoplasma antibodies and factors such as, contact with cat, raw milk consumption, raw vegetables consumption and food consumption habits, but there was no significant correlation between seropositivity and availability of drinking water, keeping...

Research paper thumbnail of Prevalence of cryptosporidium in hospitalized children under 5 years of age due to gastroenteritis (Borazjan- 2010)

Studies had indicated that the prevalence of this protozoa is more common in children under five years old than other age groups. Therefore, determining the prevalence of Cryptosporidium in this age group is the main step to assist in designing and implementing health programs. In this cross-sectional study of 374 children admitted to 17-Shahrivar Hospital in Borazjan City, stool samples were obtained throughout the whole year of 2010. Stool samples were examined by ELISA method to detect Cryptosporidium surface antigen (CSA). Of the 374 stool samples, 49 (13.1%) were confirmed as positive for Cryptosporidium surface antigen. The highest prevalence was observed in children around 1-2 years old. Although infection rate in boys (29 cases, 7.8%) was higher than girls (20 cases, 5.3%); however, no significant association was observed between gender and infection. Significant relationship was observed between Cryptosporidium infection and diarrhea, but variables such as vomiting, breast feeding, fever and seizures did not show a significant relationship with Cryptosporidium infection. The highest seasonal frequency of infection was observed in autumn. The relative high prevalence of infection in 1 to 5 years old children, the characteristics of the tropical area, the status of poor hygiene among the people due to absence of health infrastructure, and lack of adequate health information demonstrates the fact that proper plan for prevention, accurate diagnosis and treatment of cryptosporidiosis is an essential matter.
