Evidence from recent critical research (e.g. Westwood 2006) has shown that many of the main works within cross-cultural management (especially Hofstede 1980) and more broadly international management can be seen as characterized by a (neo)colonial, orientalist worldview. In this paper, we examine how ‘culture’ is discussed in five well known international management textbooks. We see postcolonial theory as potentially providing insightful lens for examining power relations concealed in this literature largely constructed from a central (Western) position that views the rest of the world as periphery. The aim of the paper is to deconstruct, with a broadly postcolonial sensibility, the discussions on culture found in international management textbooks that especially claim to 1) emphasize the cult...

It attempts to show that language, besides being a medium of communication, has come to play a crucial role in companies’ conquest of the global market, on the one hand, and in defending a general idea of an imaginary homogenous nation state, on the other. Because at the same time as English has become ‘the’ world language, one can discern increasing xenophobia and local nationalism that manifest itself in a defensive reaction against an imaginary threat on the national language (cf. Hobsbawm, 2006) and eventually on the nation state as well. For example, along with the growing demand of cultural awareness and sensitivity (see for example, Hofstede, 2001, and Holt & Wiggington, 2002) not least English language skills has come to be seen as imperative for handling supposedly occurring obstacles in cross-national bus...

Parallel plate springs are supported by the rotary drum, and at movable portions of the plate springs, a permanent magnet is gripped and a magnetic head is supported. A yoke having a wall surface opposing to both side surfaces of the permanent magnet with a prescribed distance therebetween is fixed on the fixed drum. A first coil is mounted and fixed to oppose to one side surface of the permanent magnet with a prescribed space, and a second coil is attached and fixed to oppose to the other side surface with a prescribed space therebetween, on the yoke. Accordingly, responsiveness in dynamic tracking operation at the time of signal reproduction can be improved, and vibration of the magnetic head during signal recording can be prevented.

At the same time, the findings also show that there is no evidence that the assimilating activities they offer will lead to long-term employment.Research limitations/implicationsGiven that migration across national borders has become a common phenomenon, the author suggests a call for critical reflections ...

We intend to show that very similar discursive patterns characterize the conceptualizations of culture found in these books. We especially emphasize three striking features, present in all five textbooks, which reveal how managers are meant to get to see the world once disciplined by these powerful discourses on culture: - a unanimous call for ‘cultural sensitivity’, which is presented as a skill that should be found in international managers – but has insidious implications - a general tendency to essentialize national cultures, presenting them as static and homogeneous - a way of addressing a managerialistic purpose through a reductionism that subjugates culture to the nee...

However, despite this urgency and the commendable intention behind the endeavour to enhance people’s cultural knowledge, current models on national cultures are problematic since they rely on simplistic ideas and crude stereotypes which perpetrate prejudice representations of self and others. This is problematic because these models are presented as ‘true’ portrayals of national culture rather than constructed representations. It is problematic also because it continues to hold the power to shape the perception of self and others by disseminating cultural representations based on neocolonial structures. Informed by postcolonial ideas and using critical discourse analysis, the aim of this thesis is to critically investigate the way the concept of national culture has been cons...
