This relationship is discussed through a reflection on the concepts and key features in the development of interdisciplinary street furniture design projects. It is addressed the importance of street furniture elements in the valorisation and perception of the quality of public space, and the various dimensions underlying these artefacts. It is also discussed the concept of interdisciplinarity, integrating it within the view of co-design and how the new forms of public participation are changing the practice of design. It was intended to understand the full innovation potential of an interdisciplinary approach to street furniture design and the implications of that action.

This paper is not intended to be an exhaustive discussion of economic and environmental sustainability criteria, such as to proof of energy savings and subsequently cost reductions through new outdoor lighting concepts. Rather it is hoped to be an approach of looking to our heritage and see the importance of the preservation of early streetlamps as a way to contribute to long-term sustainability of cities and also as way to increase, recover and secure knowledge which otherwise may be lost.

Abstract This article discusses the role that co-design could take in the planning and implementation of urban public spaces and its importance in the creative process as a dimension of the project itself. It is performed a reflection on co-design and urban public space concepts, through which, this paper seeks to problematize these issues. It is presented various actions by citizen activists concretely engaged in shaping the spatial, material, and social aspects of their cities, as well as participatory projects as strategic tools for urban development. The co-design emerges as a participatory approach that allows establishing communication between experts and non-experts and allows the intervention, participation and involvement of all stakeholders regardless their professional, social or cultural knowledge and practice.

They reflect the inhabitant's culture and create the image of a place. They include a continuous public realm that reflects the image and identity of the city as it accommodates the many activities -individually or in-group -that make up public life and social interactions. The quality and image of these public spaces in the public perception is created by the cohesiveness of the public realm -the facades, squares, streets, open spaces, etc. -together with the street furniture contained within their structure. This paper will briefly describe the urban development of the city of Lisbon after the big earthquake in 1755 till near 1938, and the emergence of street furniture within this scenery. It will also identify the importance of knowing the relevance and effects of historical urban furniture elements in today's inhabitants' local memory and to understand its influence in users and in the overall environment.
