The aim of this study was to investigate the Antihyperglycemic activity of aqueous and ethanol ex... more The aim of this study was to investigate the Antihyperglycemic activity of aqueous and ethanol extracts of leaves of Crinum latifolium in Alloxan (ALX) induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was confirmed after 5 days of single intraperitoneal injection of ALX (150 mg/kg) in albino Wistar rats. Aqueous and Ethanol extracts of leaves of Crinum latifolium (200 and 400 mg/kg) and Glibenclamide (10 mg/kg, p.o) orally administered daily for 15 days, blood was withdrawn for glucose determination on 0, 1, 10 and 15 days respectively. Five days before the termination of the experiment, the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) was performed to assess the glucose tolerance. For this purpose, overnight fasted rats were fed glucose (2 g/kg) orally and blood was collected at 0, 30, 60 and 120 min interval from orbital sinus for glucose estimation. On the 15th day, overnight fasted rats were sacrificed and blood was collected for the determination of blood glucose .Aqueous and Ethanol extracts of leaves of Crinum latifolium at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg showed significant reduction is blood glucose when compared to diabetic control group. We concluded that aqueous and Ethanol extracts of leaves of Crinum latifolium possess antihyperglycemic activity. The histopathology study of pancreas was also performed which showed hypoglycemic effect.

In the present investigation the glucose lowering potential of the leaf extracts of Crinum asiati... more In the present investigation the glucose lowering potential of the leaf extracts of Crinum asiaticum were prepared using cold maceration technique in solvents of varying polarity. The extracts exhibited the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolics and tannins. The oral toxicity of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts was determined and these two extracts were used of evaluating the antidiabetic activity. Oral glucose tolerance test was performed and diabetes was induced using alloxan (150 mg/kg) in rats. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts at two dose levels (200 mg/kg and 400mg/kg) were used for evaluating glucose lowering capability. Both the aqueous and the ethanolic extracts were found to significantly reduce glucose levels with the aqueous extract at dose level 200 mg/kg being the most effective (50% reduction) whereas the ethanolic extract was able to reduce the blood glucose by around 35% at the same dose level.
