The purpose of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of antenatal depression and explore its relationship between various demographic variables, recent sexual engagement, and recent adverse life events among pregnant Afghan women. Methods A cross-sectional survey study was carried out between January, 2023 and April 2023 among 406 women aged 15–45 years who were recruited randomly from Herat province (Afghanistan). Logistic regression models were utilized to explore the relationship between antenatal depression and socio-demographic characteristics among the participants. Results The prevalence of antenatal depression symptoms was 78.5%. Multiple regression analysis indicated that antenatal depression was significantly associated with (i) being aged 30–45 years AOR: 4.216, p = .001), (ii) being of low economic status (AOR:2.102, p = .036), (iii) not being employed (AOR: 2.445, p ...

No previous study in Afghanistan has ever examined both mental and physical component of quality of life among patients with eye diseases. Therefore, present study examined the quality of life and its relationship with socio-demographic characteristics among this vulnerable group. Methods A cross-sectional survey was administered from January 2022 to April 2022. Data were collected from participants with eye diseases (N = 617) in the Herat province of Afghanistan. Results Of the 617 participants, 63.4% had poor physical quality of life and 14.9% had poor mental quality of life. Among participants, the main variables associated with physical and mental quality of life were age, gender, marital status, education level, monthly income, occupation, using social media, and...

For a healthy lifestyle, different cohort groups can be affected in different ways. One such cohort is healthcare workers (HCWs) – an unexplored group in Afghanistan. Therefore, the present study examined the association between a range of socio-demographic factors including having night shift work and sleep quality among Afghan HCWs.Methods A cross-sectional survey was administered in January 2023 among HCWs (N = 342) in the Herat province of Afghanistan. The survey examined sleep quality and its association with a range of socio-demographic factors among HCWs. Logistic regression models were used to examine the association of sleep quality with socio-demographic characteristics among HCWs.Results Of the 342 participants, 58.5% reported poor sleep quality. Married marital status, having higher number of children, not being a doctor, low economic status, working night shifts, a...

The purpose of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of depression and its related factors among Afghan women. A cross-sectional study was conducted among women between July 14, 2021, to August 15, 2021, in Kabul, Mazar-e-Sharif and Samangan provinces (Afghanistan). A total of 664 Afghan women participated in the study (mean age = 28.85 years; SD ± 11.57). In order to assess depression among participants, the 19-item validated Dari version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies–Depression Scale was used. Approximately four-fifths of the sample had depression symptoms (79.1%). Participants with depression symptoms were significantly more likely to (i) be aged over 30 years, (ii) live in rural areas, (iii) have a low-income level, (iv) not have an occupation, (v) have any ...

The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale is valuable for assessing subthreshold depression. The purpose of this study was to investigate various aspects of the CES-D scale's validity and reliability in the Afghan population. Method: This methodological study was conducted between 6th June 2021 and 12th July 2021 among the general population in the Herat province of Afghanistan. A total of 424 participants filled out the questionnaires provided to them. The forward-backward translation method translated the CES-D scale into the Dari language. The data was statistically analyzed using IBM SPSS version 24.0 and AMOS version 24.0 software for Windows. Exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis were used to assess the factor structure (CFA). The reliability was assessed by Cronbach’s alpha, inter-item correlation, and total item correlation. Result: The e...

Methods: This study consisted of two stages: translation stage and psychometric analyses. Reliability analyses were done by Internal consistency (alpha value) and item total correlations and validity analyses consisted of convergent validity by SF-36 scale, confirmatory factor analyses and criterion validity (multiple linear regression by overall QoL item-q1) analyses. Acceptable type 1 error was considered as 0.05 in all analyses (n=1473). Analyses were done by using Lisrel v8.05 statistical package. Results: Item-domain correlations and-if item deleted-Cronbach alpha values detected no problematic item. The range of alpha values is 0.79-0.80, except for the social relations domain (alpha=0.41). Confirmatory factor analyses revealed goodness of fit results as: GFI: 0.88, CFI: 0.83; and RMSEA: 0.073. Physical and Psychological domains of the WHOQOL-BREF was highly correlated with the related domains of the SF-36 (r=0.60 and 0.64). All of the known groups' categories were significantly sensitive to all domain scores of the WHOQOL (p<0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed a R2 value of 35% and all domains. Conclusion:Afghan Dari version of the WHOQOL-BREF can confidently be used in clinical and population settings to assess the QoL of the people. Findings of the social relations domain should be interpreted with caution due to its poor psychometric power. Further studies are needed to address the social aspects of quality of life in Afghan population.
