Theme of this paper invite us to return to our own root culture, to “mother culture” that grow us... more Theme of this paper invite us to return to our own root culture, to “mother culture” that grow us become strong and modern nation. Because, only by maintain root culture – entered root literature by it self -- a nation will have fixed identity to grow become strong nation and go forward in the middle of change process to global era.
We realize that nations in Nusantara these days more and more far from its root culture, and its root literary, consequence of culture influence and orientation of foeign art creation that generally indigenous to West. In consequence, idea of return to root very nice and ideal. But, for nations in Nusantara -- though majority still in one ethnical clump Malay – to look for and back to root culture by it self is not easy to. Because, that root are not one, are not homogeneous, but heterogeneous, or multiculture. That root not only must looked for the tradition literary of big dominant ethnic, for example Malay and Java, but also at other tradition literary that life in Nusantara.
At a long time we realize, and confess, that we nation is multiculture – nation that formed from various of ethnical with wide variety root culture. In consequence, the new literary paradigm that will we wake up shall relied on multicultural awareness is referred. That is, art will become one of different bridge of between-ethnical understanding, to develop feel each other respect in life platform that peace and harmony.***

Kata kunci terpenting dalam prasaran ini adalah karakter -kata serapan dari bahasa Inggris, chara... more Kata kunci terpenting dalam prasaran ini adalah karakter -kata serapan dari bahasa Inggris, character, yang belum dibakukan oleh Pusat Bahasa dalam Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI). Yang ada dalam KBBI hanya padanannya, yakni watak, yang diartikan sebagai sifat batin manusia yang mempengaruhi segenap pikiran dan tingkah lakunya. Padanan dari watak, menurut KBBI, adalah budi pekerti dan tabiat. Kata karakter justru diakomodasi oleh Leksikon Sastra Indonesia 1 , dan dimaknai sebagai watak atau sifat-sifat kejiwaan (akhlak, budi pekerti, tabiat, etos) yang membedakan seseorang dengan orang lain. Karakter atau watak seseorang, selain bawaan sejak lahir (genetik), juga terbentuk oleh pendidikan, sejak pendidikan di dalam keluarga sampai di sekolah, bacaan, serta pengaruh nilai-nilai yang beredar dalam masyarakat dan lingkungan yang menumbuhkannya. Karena tiap orang memiliki bawaan genetik yang berbeda, serta tumbuh dalam lingkungan pendidikan dan pergaulan yang relatif kolektif yang dibangun oleh nilai-nilai yang bersifat universal seperti nilai-nilai agama, ideologi yang menjadi jalan hidup (way of life) bangsa dan negara seperti Pancasila, serta nilai-nilai yang menjadi semacam "kesepakatan bersama" dalam hidup bermasyarakat dan diwariskan secara turun-temurun oleh para orang tua kepada yang lebih muda. Karakter kolektif ini menjadi semacam watak komunal 1
