Previously at the Helsinki summit, the decision of the EU to include Turkey among the list of candidate countries for membership has eased tensions in the capitols of Western Allies. After two years of very cold relations the two sides seem to be moving toward better days. As a candidate for membership, Turkey has attained recognition from its European neighbors that it belongs in the European club of states – a status sought by Turkish and Ottoman governments for almost 150 years. However, unlike in the case of other candidate countries, accession talks were not to begin until Turkey completed a series of economic and political reforms. During the last year and a half, the Turkish governments succeeded in passing series of amendments to the Turkish Constitution and had hoped that the EU would grant Tu...

This analysis lays the groundwork in assessing just how far we are from a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus conflict. The author first evaluates the progress accomplished by the two leaders in the peace negotiations since 2008 when the current round of negotiations started. Second, he looks at how far they are today in finalizing a comprehensive peace plan. Third, he assesses where the public opinion on both sides of the UN divide stand vis-à-vis a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem. Here, the author identifies the main obstacles confronting a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus conflict. Finally, based on the overall analysis, the author speculates on future scenarios and proposes recommendations for the UN to help bring the conflict to a comprehensive settlement.

The emergence of almost two dozen new nation states from the remnants of the former Soviet Union and the Balkans (i.e., former Yugoslavia) together with the sudden eruptions of several ethnic conflicts within these new states and elsewhere in the world, pushed forward the discussion of the troubled concepts, such as sovereignty and self-determination, as well as other related concepts such as people, nation, peace-building, state-building, that are organically linked to the concept of nation state. In an earlier article, Sözen (2002) suggested that there were four waves of emergence of nation states: 1) 1789–1914, 2) 1914–1945, 3) 1945–1989, and 4) 1990s: – First Wave – The time between the French Revolution (1789) and World War I where nation states emerged due to the influence of the ideas of the French Revolution; – Se...
