Background: Stunting or low height-for-age is failure to reach linear growth potential, and is a ... more Background: Stunting or low height-for-age is failure to reach linear growth potential, and is a key indicator of chronic under nutrition. The objectives of the study were to assess the status of stunting among children attending outpatient department and to evaluate the demographic profile of such children.Methods: A hospital based cross sectional study conducted over a period 6 months from August 2015 to January 2016 among children within age group of 2 to 12 years attending outpatient department of GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair. Height-for-age z-scores (HFAz) was generated using the WHO Anthro software (version 3.2.2).Results: Overall 444 students’ were included in the study which included 213 male children (48%) and 231 female children (52.0%). Out of this 21.70% children were stunted and 6.3% children were severely stunted. Among the socio demographic factors shunting and severe stunting is seen among lower/upper lower class (82.14%) followed by middle/lower middle class.Conclus...

Timely diagnosis with quick initiation of treatment reduces breast cancer mortality. Therefore, skilldevelopment on Self Breast Examination among the community women is essential.Objectives: To disseminate information about screening method among reproductive age group women incommunity and to provide the skills on breast self-examination.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in Urban Health Centre in New Delhi in which104 women participants of age between 15 to 45 years were included in study. Data was collected with thehelp of a predesigned, pre-validated and pretested questionnaire. Participants were educated on breast selfexaminationand technique by using dummy breast model. Pre-Test and Post Test evaluation was done toassess skills on SBE.Result: Two third of participants had never performed SBE. There was improvement in skill acquired byparticipants which revealed a mean Pre-test score of 1.91±2.25 which improved to 6.10±0.33 in Post testscore and it was found to be statistically significant with p<0.001.Conclusion: This study results confirms that there is general lack of knowledge about Self Breast Examination(SBE) among women in the community and also had poor skills on self-breast examination .Hence SelfBreast Examination Module and demonstration of SBE was effective in enabling women in the communitywith knowledge and skills of Self-evaluation of Breast regardless of their level of education.

Historically the first epidemic of clinical dengue-like illness has been recognized in Chennai in the year 1780 and the first virologically diagnosed epidemic of dengue fever (DF) occurred in Kolkata and Eastern Coast of India in 1963-1964.

About 85.40% had heard about leprosy, 69.50% were aware about hypo pigmented patches and 32.50% knew that it spreads by close contact. Around one third were aware that leprosy is curable, free treatment available and may result in deformity if left untreated. 65.90 % didn't want to invite leprosy patient to their social gathering and 12.10% respondents thought that leprosy patient shouldn't be given same respect as others.

This study was conducted to assess the vector control methods adopted by the households in Wandoor village of South Andaman and to assess the coverage of IRS and ITN in the community. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted in Wandoor village of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, between January to March 2017.The sample size was calculated based on the prevalence of regular use of ITN of 80%. Background: Despite implementation of DOTS and tremendous effort by government Tuberculosis (TB) ... more Background: Despite implementation of DOTS and tremendous effort by government Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a major public health problem worldwide with multi drug resistant tuberculosis becoming a major area of concern. Aims and objectives: To evaluate the incidence of MDR-TB in the islands and describe the basic demographic correlates of new cases of MDR-TB. Methodology: Retrospective data mining on new cases of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis from state Tuberculosis control society under Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme from January 2012 to December 2018. Results: Total number of MDR-TB cases from 2012 TO 2018 was 275 which included 172 males and 103 females. Incidence of multi drug resistant Tuberculosis varied from 2.09 to 15.19 per lakh population. Conclusion: The numbers of cases have increased from 2012 to 2018. Rapid diagnosis, treatment and surveillance are a must to fight the battle of MDR-TB.

Mobile phones have become an unavoidable part of the youth's life. 1-3 Smart phones are attractiv... more Mobile phones have become an unavoidable part of the youth's life. 1-3 Smart phones are attractive and a very handy technological appliance, competent to disperse a lot of information in finger tips and it also includes features like internet access, multimedia and GPS navigation in addition to its use for communication. The key point of difference between ordinary mobiles and newer smart phones is that smart phones offer much easy access to the web and other applications which can also be downloaded and stored in it. 4 According to WHO Expert Committee-1964, addiction to any particulate substance or any act is considered as dependence. It is continuous use of something which is apparently believed to provide oneself a sort of relief, comfort, or stimulation, resulting in cravings when the same is absent. 5 The overall increase in usage of smart phones in young and adolescent age group in their everyday life has made smart phone addiction a significant social morbidity in society. 6 Its after effects due to increased usage include physical health-related problems, such as musculoskeletal disorders of the hand, wrist, cervical spine, back muscles, ocular manifestations and elevated risk of psychological disorders such as attention deficit, aggression and even sleep disturbance. 7-11 Smartphone devices using both android and iOS softwares are found to be carried everywhere like in bed, ABSTRACT Background: Smart phones have become an integral part of youth. But at the same time addiction towards its use have become a serious concern among them. The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of smart phone usage among medical college students and their demographic characteristics. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 192 medical students. A self administered SAS scale has been used to assess the level of smart phone addiction. Subjects were classified into smart phone non-user group, a low smart phone user group and a high smart phone user group. Results: Out of 192 subjects who completed the questionnaires 85.40% (n=164) had smart phone addiction. Out of the total 192 students 28 students (14.60%) were low smart phone users, of which 9 were boys (14.30%) and 19 were girls (14.70%). Among 164 (85.40%) high smart phone users 54 students were boys (85.70%) and 110 were girls (85.30%) which was not statistically significant at 5% level (chi square=0.007, p=0.935). Conclusions: Medical college students in Andaman and Nicobar Islands are more vulnerable for smart phone addiction.
