Research paper thumbnail of Development of a Wireless Obstacle Detection System

Obstacle detection systems are important for helping individuals with safer locomotion particular... more Obstacle detection systems are important for helping individuals with safer locomotion particularly for older adults and people with visual impairment. Such a system must be wearable and easier to use. This paper discusses the suitability of the available low cost range sensors (such as infrared and ultrasonic) in solving obstacle detection problems and introduces an approach to assist the elderly with safer locomotion. In the proposed technique, the sensors are attached to the front part of the shoes for detecting obstacles in the field of view of the sensors. An algorithm has been developed to alert the user if an obstacle is detected. Test results indicate that detection accuracies by the ultrasound and infrared sensors are about 95% and 92%, respectively. The proposed sensor system shows potential for application in obstacle detection during walking.

Research paper thumbnail of Electricity load forecasting for Urban area using weather forecast information

Efficient Energy Management System (EMS) is the need of the day. All residential and commercial buildings can achieve better energy efficiency and consumption with the use of EMS. Load forecasting is one of the methods to enable EMS to work efficiently. The accuracy of load forecast depends on many factors. The load forecast model must consider the weather forecast for the region in developing an accurate forecast. This paper develops Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Bagged Regression Trees to generate and predicted load forecast in Urban area using Meteorological data. ANN model is compared with Bagged Regression Trees for prediction accuracy. Good agreement was observed by comparing these results with those available in the literature. It has been observed through analysis that Bagged Regression Trees produce better load prediction for the day ahead load in the urban area.

The trade-off between rail-to-rail performance and power consumption, in terms of bias current is observed. Simulation results with SPICE Level 3 models, using Cadence tools, are discussed and compared with other op-amps. The proposed circuit exhibits high speed with Slew Rate of 49.24 V/μs, better rejection ratios and offset performance, and consumes a power of 25.44 mW for rail-to-rail performance. The paper also discusses the effects of reducing the bias current to reduce power consumption.
